Whiskey is better!

In a china cabinet, not exposed to direct light but not dark either. Also they avoid air conditioning except for the hottest days.

 

Corks are the weak aspect, they can start losing integrity at about 25 years. Smaller corks are worse.

Hmm, not ideal. Should have been stored away from light, there's a reason expensive whisky nearly always come in a box of some kind. Lesson for next time.

Does it also look pretty watery in color? Not very dark? Because that's what happens over time with any kind of UV light, it will break down the whisky and make it more watery in character. It typically loses a lot of flavor. Only one way to find out if it's good or not I guess... or just keep it as a novelty item. It is a nice bottle.

 

drink that taylor man, better yet invite some friends over and drink it with them. We do buy the stuff for it to sit on a shelf and look pretty, we buy ti to drink...well at least I do.

Does it have any age statement on it? Suntory and Yamazaki so its japanese and Yamazaki is nigh impossible to find now.

you know even if its complete shit its worth it just to see...you will likely never find that again or probably even know someone else that's had it.

 

Rye whiskey is good for those more complicated mixology beverages. The edge from the grain goes well with mix components.

Jack Daniels No.7 and Jim Beam White Label are good basics for having at a party.

Canadian Whiskey (lower end stuff like Seagrams 7) goes well with coke and soda, but I prefer Jack and Beam.

I wouldn’t use wheated bourbons like Maker’s In mixologist-type drinks. It is a bit too smooth and velvety. It could get lost in the mix, so to speak.

Your tastes may be different, so YMMV.

And as far as Scotch and soda goes, blended Scotch like Chivas isn’t bad, and low-end Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich and their ilk are good choices. Stuff like MacAllan and other sherry-casked spirits, although not peaty/smokey, are too good for mixing and should be consumed neat (or on the rocks if you’re needing to nurse a drink and/or pace yourself for a long night).

Again, just my opinion. Everyone has different tastes.

It has some sort of California tax sticker on it. It looks like it's been opened but not consumed. Or someone just filled it with a brown liquid, which I doubt.

I don't know if a date can be identified from the sticker. The imported label looks like something from the 80s.

 

Not sure also I asked but honestly wouldn't really expect a blend to be age stated anyway.

Whatever it is at the very least it's a cool find especially considering the recent craze over Japanese whisky right now.

 

If it's open why not try it and see if it still is whiskey in there? It really might not be.. it could be just be water for display purposes for all we know.

And any resale value there might have been is basically gone if it's been opened.

 

I wouldn't have sold it anyway. At best I could get what, $50? Passing up the opportunity of trying an unobtanium whisky?

Just picked up this bottle. $25, but good reviews. I gave it a smell, smelled pretty good. Ill try it out tonight. Not very expensive, which is good, as I had to borrow the $25 from my friend, don't get payed until tomorrow.

 

Pro tip: bringing your own bottle of scotch to college parties nearly excludes everyone from nipping your stash. And, you get to be "that rando over there drinking disgusting scotch" that the library science major chicks dig. Just be sure to bring a proper glass from which to drink it.

 

I always bring my own bottle to parties. Sometimes whisky, sometimes rum, sometimes vodka when I feel like making bad decisions. I don't bring a glass though. I would feel too pretentious drinking it out of a stemmed glass, or a rocks glass. I just drink straight out of the bottle.

EDIT: Though I don't care too much what others think of me, so maybe I will be the pretentious guy drinking out of a glass. I mean, last party I went to was danger themed, I showed up in a construction vest, hard hat, and wore 2 tall traffic cones I "borrowed" around my neck. Party before that I wore a gold velvety bomber jacket, with a shiny maroon shirt. Party before that I wore a white jacket with silver vinyl stuff on the shoulders, and a In The Court of The Crimson King giant screaming face shirt underneath.

 

Dude, cheapo tumbler glasses from salvation army. Even if it's relatively inexpensive scotch, don't disgrace it by drinking from the bottle or pouring over ice like a hobo.

 

True, ill have to make a run to goodwill. My current stemmed glass and rocks glass are from there, $1 each. I never use ice though, I tried it, and its just not as good. So I just use a rocks glass as an "even more whiskey" glass.

 

And this Dewar's is not very good. Smooth, but I don't like the taste. Maybe I just don't like scotch. I'll have to try some others.

Edit: maybe that whisky wasnt so bad...

 

Semi-sensible blended shootout. Islay Mist vs Johnnie Walker Black.



This is actually a tough call. I think for my tastes I prefer the Black Label, it's a little thicker and heavier with a somewhat smoother finish. More towards a syrupy character but still with some peat. The Islay Mist is less heavy and has more of a floral waxy character, especially in the finish. I think if you like Glenmorangie you'll probably prefer the Islay Mist over the Black Label. I'm personally not a big Glenmorangie fan though. Non-whisky drinkers might also prefer the Islay Mist.

Overall two great whiskies which are absolutely worth their price, not too fancy or complex but with nice and balanced characters. Also, stay away from the Johnnie Walker Red. That one is rat poison, black label is cheapest Johnnie Walker you should buy.
