Way too classy for me. Plus there's no gun-play, helicopters, knife fights (all the usual stuff I watch).

HAPPY! is coming back for a second season. I didn't think they would do a second season. Such a messed up show. Loved it.

My head would explode (from the title alone) if I watched a show called "HAPPY!"

    Now, a show titled "ANHEDONIA" ... I'd binge-watch that.

    "but seriously"

I'm nearly 1/2-way through all episodes for PUNISHER. Brilliant at times, meandering & stalled at others. I keep watching because I so like the actors in the top roles, especially Jon Bernthal. To say he lives the role would be an understatement. I first noticed him as the baddie in a Ben Affleck vehicle, THE ACCOUNTANT. His work was all that mattered for me in that production.

Also slowly working my way through a rather different production, THE O/A, in which Brit Marling (wrote it, directed 1st episode & stars) does the thing I've seen her do before: she looks defocused, bewitched by some magic or other, one foot in this world & the other in a different dimension--and damned if I don't follow her every step of the journey. She's very talented & different.

I've seen O/A on my Netflix menu several times, but haven't watched it. I might have to.

The wife and I have been watching the new show "The Enemy Within", which is actually really good.

And of course "Billions" returns tonight which is an amazing show.

Thanks @restrav3 for the heads up on Letterkenny. I'd never heard of it before but that's some comedy gold right there. looks like I've got something to binge on for a while.

Available on Hulu right now. Just when I thought Primes UI sucked, then Hulu out sucked them.

Lately I've been watching some of the old Robert Stack Unsolved Mysteries episodes on Prime. I also just finished season 3 of Daredevil...gutted they're not making more.

I've been watching Godless on Netflix lately. Just 3 out of 7 episodes in so far. I didn't see myself watching a Western as I'm usually more of a sci-fi or conspiracy type of viewer but this show is quite good. It is not for the squeamish as it's pretty violent and also gritty. Jeff Daniels, who is usually great in most everything he does, is superb playing an extremely bad guy. There are plenty of the usual stereotypical Western tropes but lots of shades of gray as well. So far, I'd give it an 8.5/10.

So I'm told. And it's actually on my Netflix watch list.

Though truth be told, there probably is a market out there for FIFTY SHADES OF GREY meets GODLESS: ie, an S&M soft-porn epic taking place in the frontier days: long scenes of turgid S&M puncu

I confess to a new "guilty pleasure" Netflix series: the bizarrely entertaining HEMLOCK GROVE. I'm on the verge of actually binge-watching this thing (a rarity for me)...each episode is perfectly calibrated to hurtle the viewer into the mystery & confusion of the next.

This series has repeatedly fooled me:
    • At first it looked like BEVERLY HILLS 90210 meets LOST BOYS. The thought, "This is teeny-bopper junk," crossed my mind...
    • Wrong. The adults are even more out there & riven by strange lusts than the high school kids. Despite a couple over-the-top characters, I can't quite place all these characters on the PURE EVIL (to) ANGELIC continuum of moral/ethical complexity. Nothing is as obvious as it seems at first
    • It's a real blast watching 2 high-grade non-American actors of different generations (Famke Janssen, then 46; and Bill Skarsgård, then 20) tear up the scenery. And they're not overacting here. There's lots of subtle face & postural acting going on
    • The single most sympathetic character is early on outed as a werewolf (really). But the truly evil character's identity is hidden (at Episode 6, no clue as to who it is)
I highly recommend this one for dramatic surprise value & nuanced perversity...

Well, I stumbled over another binge-worthy NETFLIX series--the Korean police & prosecutor procedural, STRANGER (https://www.netflix.com/search?q=stranger&jbv=80187302&jbp=0&jbr=0). It was slow going at first but has accelerated to become perhaps the best TV show I've seen in the years.

It takes time to sink into this highly stylized drama, which often has near-soap opera intensity & tension with lengthy, vivid closeups being the norm. This is South Korea and everyone onscreen is sending very subtle (and different) social & behavior cues that western observers don't immediately pick up. The tense, unpredictable interactions between prosecutor/characters require real concentration to decode (these scenes are more intellectual kung fu than dialogue). But after a couple episodes I locked in.

It was bizarrely entertaining from the first moment. The central character ("a prosecutor without empathy") sounds like an unfilmable construct--but somehow the compulsively watchable, blank-faced Seung-woo Cho makes it work. You can't take your eyes off him...what he lacks in feelings (a major plot point) he more than makes up for with sheer IQ & ingenuity...also surprising insight into others' motivations.

His dramatic partner, a "bold policewoman" played by Doona Bae, is also compulsively watchable, but for different reasons: she's the only woman in an all-male, macho police dep't, and seems to be the only one with any real insight & motivation for solving crimes. Her interactions with the prosecutor character are priceless: he's written to be so neutral & devoid of emotion that other characters have little to interact with. Yet she makes it happen with a combination of insight into the purity & loneliness of his nature and her own considerable emotional intelligence.

There was a moment in Episode 6 last night where the two of them are in a car. He's thinking over things she's said and shockingly, smiles to himself--the 1st time in ~500 minutes we've seen him smile. It took me a minute to recognize his face as smile. Meanwhile she's driving & emanating a vibe of safe haven, protector & spiritual partner for this odd, lonely man. I said to myself, "I love these people."

Russian Doll on Netfrix is an interesting take on Ground Hog Day. Enjoyed it a lot.

I don't know if it's been mentioned but David Fincher and Tim Miller's Love, Death and Robots on Netflix is a near masterpiece. An anthology of very NSFW animated shorts that is gorgeous and incredibly imaginative. Like the Heavy Metal comics of old come to life. Highly highly recommended. I was shocked since I'm used to seeing mostly mediocrity from Netflix shows. But this is the real deal.
