Just came back from John Wick 3. The fights are more ambitious, and I think that the flaws show largely because of that expanded ambition. There were three or four setpieces that were every bit as good as the fights in the original - the rest is relatively lackluster, but a lot of it was pretty fresh and innovative nonetheless.

I actually liked it more than John Wick 2 - I appreciate that the directors went to such lengths to try out new ideas. The humor was better paced and there's more of that visceral energy that made the original so interesting. With the original at a benchmark of 10 I'd give the sequel maybe a 8 and this one a 8.5.

I took someone to see John Wick 3 yesterday and she said it was terrible. I told her it was supposed to be.

Of all the women I know, I can't think of one who could endure even 15" of any JOHN WICK film (much less the entire film). Either I don't know the right women--or this shows the differential allure of violence porn for men vs women.

I plan to see JOHN WICK 3 this week (alone)--exactly as I watch my favorite violence porn on TV (such as THE PUNISHER & THE RAID on Netflix).

My wife thought the first John Wick was awesome. We haven't seen the second one yet but once the third comes out on blu-ray maybe we will pick up a box set.

John Wick 3 was okay. Inferior to the original and sequel, but still a decent watch overall.

It just lacks the same slickness and suaveness of either, and the fight choreography while fantastic overall gets a little clumsy at times, especially in the scenes with Halle Berry.

Finally saw JOHN WICK 3 yesterday. Was quite overwhelmed by the metastatic violence & nihilism of this film. I've always loved kick-ass flicks, but this one took me past my limit.

It's official: I'm a wuss...and obviously in the minority re JW3: imdb.com has it rated at 8.2, a very high rating for any film, especially one out for 2 weeks & seen by millions.

PS: Have said all that, I definitely appreciated the honor & emphasis given great martial artists here, with standout fights featuring Mark Dacascos, Yayan Ruhian (the co-star of THE RAID), and numerous others.

Just got back from watching Godzilla 2. Here is a spoiler-free mini-review.

I think Dougherty has tried to steer things a little more towards the Toho's Godzilla. It is quite evident from Gojira's redesign (with enlarged and maple leaf shaped dorsal fins, bulkier torso and tail) and the background score in the movie. I definitely prefer the more athletic build and the slight modern take of the beast in 2014 Godzilla movie. You can also detect some inspirations drawn from the Godzilla animated trilogy and Shin Godzilla. But it won't be too evident unless you have watched those 2 movies. Where I think G2 fails is the cheesy dialogues and storytelling. It felt amateurish. Kind of like the difference between Pacific Rim 1 and 2 if you will. After watching G2, I now have a bigger respect for the darker theme approach that Gareth Edwards took for G1. Also, the dialogues in G1 were more naturalesque and the whole movie seemed more mature and refined. Screenplay wise, it must have been a challenging task for the crew to capture the complexity and grandiose nature of some of the scenes, and I think they did a commendable job. One more compliment I would like to give to the G2 crew is, how they have portrayed Ghidora. Ghidora is definitely bad-ass. They could have added a little more action sequences of the 2 beasts duelling. But it has more fight scenes than G1. Compared to G1, G2 is more action packed, but also more childish and cheesy. G1's BGM was also better. In terms of overall quality, G1 was definitely better and I definitely prefer G1, although it was a bit draggy and dark. But to cut some slack for G2, the scope of the movie was much larger and daunting than G1.

Just wrapped up watching John Carter with my little one today. I did not see it in theaters and heard mostly negative things about it. I thought it was good, all things considered. Needed a better editing (maybe min wacked off) but for the background story I thought they did ok. My expectations were low so that helped. Still, I thought it was as convincing as the very popular Marvel flicks, and more than the latest Star Wars efforts...

I really liked John Carter actually. It's one of those movies that the internet decided it would be cool to hate. I also think people liked seeing this massive disney tentpole flop, its still one of the biggest flops in history i think? Anyways, another movie, recently, that I think people decided it would be cool to hate was Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets, which I also really enjoyed.

Neither is like some sort of perfect movie, but they are both entertaining and not hollow in the way most super flics are

Well, I just got back from a film everyone (moviegoers, critics, & the Internet) apparently decided to ignore: BRIGHTBURN. Had to rush today because no doubt it will be gone tomorrow.

I found this to be tidy little "B movie" horror production. Some good & believable character acting w/the lead role being somewhat weaker. But really, it was pretty satisfying. Scary at times with good FX and production values.

    2 things I particularly liked:
    • The emergence of this "un-Superman" concept itself: it seems so logical (cute little baby from outer space grows up to be a very bad person), but somehow never emerged before now
    • And the chaotic/violent way this young man used his powers when he got pissed off at someone (ie, blasting at warp speed through houses, even 1 human body)
    Really not bad at all...

Years ago I watched many foreign films and small independent productions, some of which portrayed reality vs human consciousness using non-linear, impressionistic, dreamlike techniques (dialogue and/or visual). Directors of this type included Luis Bunuel, Ingmar Bergman, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Daron Aronofsky, Spike Jonz. All to say at one time I was quite used to having my mind fucked with by strange, beautiful films.

I'm out of practice, and it really showed the other night when I saw ENEMY (2013; director Denis Villeneuve). This Canadian indie shows the main character (Toronto history teacher, Jake Gyllenhaal) becoming aware of, then making contact with his doppelganger, an actor. The narrative slowly descends into subconscious chaos & blurred reality. This film so confused & unsettled me that I went back to imdb.com & read all user comments--some of which were quasi-essays trying to explicate the dreamlike strangeness & possible meanings of the film.

Hours after seeing EMEMY, I dreamed about it--this being a sure sign the film got through my defenses & entered my subconscious. I've thought of it often since.

I don't think EMEMY is a truly great film. But if you value cinema that shakes you up, engages your feelings & thoughts, try this one. It's on NETFLIX.

Enemy is a great mindfuck. The key is, and what most fail to grasp, is that none of it is to be taken literally. All the wall-o-text attempts to "explain" it on foruns and YouTube videos are laughable and make no sense.

As you've already experienced by dreaming, the film functions as subconscious allegory and is meant to f**k with your preconceived notions of reality. That's the reason it is so unsettling but compelling.

Really liked it. Too bad it has no sequel(s).
It was fun and cool until the ending. Kinda feels weird, that end. I know it's a trope, but just feels odd. 0 plot twists, very very predictable and unsatisfying for me personally. That being said, you don't need to subvert every fukken thing and its mother like rian johnson, that's even more stupid.

Just saw Dark Phoenix. Don't know why it was so heavily trashed by critics, I thought it was pretty good for what it is. Much, much better than X-Men Apocalypse.
