Whiskey is better!

That's a lot of whiskey in that drink.

I had a really weird/not good old fashioned at a bar once, not sure what it was. Used cherries for one, and they shook it instead of making it in the glass, and there was a bunch of liquid they put in that wasn't whiskey (there was whiskey too obviously) sure what it was, but overall, bad old fashioned.
But then at another place I got an actual good one.

 

That's probably what it was. Way to much ice too, got diluted a lot.
I'll have to work on making an old fashioned myself

 

People tend to overdo the classic/simplistic drinks. An old fashioned is a sugar cube or equivalent granular sugar, a few (2-5) drops of bitters, Angostura, as they are still the best I've had, a few ounces of good bourbon, an ice cube, and a slice of orange peel, not a whole slice of orange. Big difference in the latter, you don't want want the juice, only the oil or essence of orange. Too much more than that and you are looking at a different cocktail.

 

Ive cut back on the sugar quite a bit but yeah simple is better here.

 

I’m a rocks guy. Can’t help it. I just like it better. First sip gets your attention, last sip has the essence of good bourbon leftover. A smooth transition from former to latter. I’m done with neat and water back. I’m not as tough as John Wick though. Love those movies.......

 

Maybe it's not schools these days making children soft, but movies like John Wick showing "cool" people getting bourbon on the rocks.

Straight is just so much better imo, otherwise it just gets watered down and tasteless.

Smooth with a little bit of bite in the finish. Not too pricey. Good neat or with a splash of water.

If you find this Whiskey on a shelf near you, try it out. It's delicious. Very balanced with spice, sweetness and an excellent mouthfeel. Makes a great old fashioned too.

According to the owner obtained distillate 94 degrees and a high degree of purification.
The taste of the drink depends on the raw material (grapes, mulberries, dogwood, pomegranate) and the aging time.

The most delicious was alcohol from pomegranate, diluted to 40 degrees with artesian water with a small addition of honey.
The drink was not prepared on the machines from the photos.
Possession of such devices gives creativity in creating new tastes.

 

So, I turned 50 and opened one of these up this week: Port Ellen 5th Release



If you can get a taste of this, it's up there with the best Islay that could ever pass your lips.

What else is even close?

 

Well at a point it does come down to preference and Port Ellen is absolutelya work of art. But I also love the young, peaty belters. So I'd throw in the Lagavulin 12 Cask Strength of 2009 and a quirky one that I ended up really loving was the Port Charlotte PC8 Ar Duthcas 8-year old release (or pre-release as they were gearing up the distillery). It had a pronounced immediate nose of popcorn of all things but setlled with air and especially a little maturation/oxidation of the bottle contents over a few months of drinking and was excellent IMO.

 

Same, I'm a big fan of the Octomore series, particularly 8.2 as well as a few of the special cask finished versions of Laphroaig, but still wouldn't put them in the same air as Port Ellen, especially an official bottling. Not much else from Scotland gives you that diesel-y briny palate and exceptionally long finish. The closest thing I've found to that in other spirits would be from a Caroni.

 

So super new here (just call me “RaNDo”… but, in addition to my audio obsession, so, too are fine whiskeys, bourbons, and wines.

My handle (Bowmoreman) likely gives away my favorites in Scotch Whiskey: Islay’s, specifically Bowmore, closely followed by Lagavullin, Laphroiag… haha

For bourbons, the “daily tipple” is (when obtanium) Buffalo Trace. It’s about 80-85% of Pappy Van (alas, my last bottle of that in 15 yr old was drunk about 4 years ago the night before our move TO Texas, with several close friends). But, there are just so many tasty ones, where to start? Willet’s are very nice, as is Colonel Taylor (when it can be found).

Surprisingly, during the 4 years living in Texas, I discovered they have a very nice - and growing better all the time - whiskey distillery movement (especially in the Hill Country, just outside of Austin - We lived in Wimberley). Balcones makes a fascinating and highly recommended line. TX is another.

Anyways, we moved TO Texas with 1000 bottles of wine and 2500 records. To assist in funding our return north 4 years later, I sold 72 bottles of wine and about 400 records. Didn’t sell any of the Bourbons or Whiskey’s though. <grin>

Frankly, we find evening listening sessions with a nice glass of Whiskey to be fantastic.
