"less perceived traction loss" can be so many things, and if u ask me, sounds bad. On snow I want to feel everything. Is Mazda's system permanent? I dont doubt Mazda make good cars, but BMW's diesel engines are sick, and so are their "new" inline 6.

    Let me be clear:

Mazda spent a shitload of time being smarter about snow driving and the software for managing power in their AWD system is leagues ahead of what most people are doing today. I can feel everything in the CX-9 and the only comparable drive I got out of the vehicles I was driving without being fucked was out of an outback with snow tires.

Former 1st gen BMW X5 owner here :headbang: Excellent, solid, sporty SUV way back then.

After driving cars, SUV's, and 120,000 lb double tractor trailers in snow, slush, and mud for almost 25 years. A huge factor is tire width, an X5 probably has a wider tire than the Mazda CX5. Wide tires in snow and slush are not friendly to traction, even if they are snow tires, they tend to "float". Making acceleration, stopping, and turning a hair raising experience on a good day.

Limited slip differentials and the type (mechanical or electronic...etc) are another influence in the whole winter driving dynamic.

Then we have 4x4's and possible locking differentials to add to the mix.

Basically a 4x4 with full locking diffs and wide all season tires has a good chance of getting owned by a front wheel drive car with studded snow tires. I've seen it first hand multiple times.

Bottom line, make sure you have the proper tire for conditions, AWD will not make you a level 99 Winter Wizard if you have all season tires on it regardless of vehicle make or model. I would not mess around with all seasons anywhere there is real winter, it's just not worth it. I've seen too many winter tragedies, even if you have AWD or 4x4, change your tires before the temperature drops.

Those who use all season tires should just give their car away. Cant believe such thing even exist. A car has 4 rather small contact patches with the road, yet people choose garbage tires? Makes no sens...

Even if its only snow a few months per year, just get studless

Another big change from CA for us was having a big ass house with a three car garage. It's easier to just have a second set of wheels for your car with snow tires on them. Swapping takes less than 30 minutes and you're always ready for the snow.

Drove the CX-5 Signature edition or whatever the top trim level is called. I can see the appeal, and it does have good low-end power. Seems like a really nice value. Didn't have any snow, so couldn't evaluate how awesome the AWD might or might not be.

Then drove an Audi Q5. Holy shit. It's in another league altogether. Again, not sayin the AWD is different, better, or worse, but the whole car is in another league of refinement and feel.

I'll try the refreshed Q3 when it comes out later this year and then decide. Probably will end up with an Audi.

Why does every Japanese car feel mushy compared to a similar German model?

Mits and Subie makes nice awd cars, but that's a very niche market and the interiors are't as nice as their german counterparts. The answer is money. The GTR and NSX are polar opposite sports cars. I prefere german for sports cars, but for everyday cars, I'll take Porsche any day. uniqueness of the rear engine or a mid sports engine layout, small wheelbase, and the ability for me to drive it everyday. If I had multiple kids then I'd have to find a german sports sedan.or buy the panamera again.

So, new A90 Supra: who here is sacking away nickels and dimes for the new Toyo-Uro? I know for my DINK-ass, it's up there to replace the GTI when the time comes. B58 = tuna paradise. Stage2 500hp like F-series Bimmers in the A90 package? I'l take it.

    What's a bike?

On-Topic: 2015 Honda Fit paint sucks, but still runs just fine. I need to take it for its oil-change soon. I wished I did a Subaru instead (maybe Forester or Impleza Hatchback if I ever move back north).

Nothing says "RACECAR" like a 1-1/4" receiver hitch poking out of the rear diffusor.

Buy a 2020 Camaro 2SS with or without the 1LE package and come out ahead. With the $30,000 you saved you can actually afford the $1500 set of tires, $700 DiY set of brakes, and change the differential and brake fluid every season after you've spent time on the track.

Don't get the 2019 because the front end is gross. They're fixing it for 2020 model year. Don't buy a 2016-2018 because the 8 speed auto trans sucks. Unless you want to buy mine in which case yes it's definitely good. The 1LE comes with a manual anyway so there's no problem there.

    Problem solved.

I'd have the BMW Z4 and it's in the $70K range for anything worth spending money on. If you buy a BMW, you don't buy the base BMW.

That flat-plane crank V-8 is very sweet.

Gotcha, so we're talking $70+k. Not that I'm ever gonna buy a $70k plaything that's a 100% track rat, i.e., not GT350 or ZL1, but if i did consider dropping that type of money on a do-it-all "true" sports car, it'd be 718 S. Or Boxster. Or, $50k Supra and some hookers and blow, and $15k in tires/brakes/tune/Gazoo Racing junk.

$30k difference seems on high side, but Chevy is throwing money at Camaros, I've heard $12k and more off between factory & dealer incentives, so that gets a 2SS down to maybe just over $30k, difference of almost $20k under Supra. And for the first year, you ain't gonna find a Supra at MSRP, so maybe $25k difference is possible
