I don't really care of IPA's either. Much like Miles from Sideways thinks about Merlot, I often think about IPA. However, there's really only one 1 IPA you should try: https://russianriverbrewing.com/pliny-the-elder/
But you have to go there to have it.

Pliny is very good indeed, but you don't have to go to California to get some as it's almost always on tap here in Philly. One of the best beer bars in the country (some would say world) is a place called Monk's Cafe (https://www.monkscafe.com/) is in Center City Philadelphia, just off Rittenhouse Square. I was lucky enough to live across the street from it when I was in grad school. Now I have to walk a whole 5 blocks! Come to Philly, grab a cheese-steak, run the museum stairs Rocky style and grab a Pliny* at Monk's! Cheers

*(If for some reason they don't have Pliny on tap, they ALWAYS have RRBC's Blind Pig and they also have one of the best selections of Belgian beers in the country - take a look at their bottle selection on their website.)

Nice! I didn’t know you could get RRB stuff out of state. I’m usually in Napa once a year and always try and make a stop to the brewery.

Headed to Monks tomorrow for a business meeting (yeah, it's a great place to meet fellow leaders who also love good beer) and was looking to move beyond my typical Pliny/Blind Pig order. They just added RRBC Damnation to their tap menu. Any experience with the crowd on this Belgian style strong pale ale? Cheers

I’ve had Damnation but it’s been too long to remember much. I was always partial to Little White Lie.

In my personal opinion - Blind Pig is better than Pliny. I think most breweries have caught up and passed that benchmark though. Pliny was/is a very good example of a balanced West Coast IPA that still has its place though. I do think some of their "Belgian" beers are outstanding. Consecration and Supplication come to mind for me. They also have a 100% brett beer that is quite interesting. I know they just opened a new location in 2018 - so you might see some further distribution.

    PLINY ALERT

Anyone in the NE who wants to experience both Pliny's at once can come to Monk's Cafe in Philly tomorrow (2/23/19) for their "Annual Pliny the Younger Fundraiser" - https://www.monkscafe.com/events/. They will be pouring both Pliny the Elder (which they often have) as well as Pliny the Younger, the top rated IIPA on Beer Advocate (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/863/21690/). All proceeds (100% of purchase price) go to Alex's Lemonade Stand, which makes this even cooler. Cheers

eh, dfh has been churning out the same boring IPAs for too long. and most of their large format weird stuff is pretty disgusting and overdone. if the only thing a brewery is good at is making flavorless session ales at 3.2%abv, how is that different than brewing expensive coors light?

Wow, that is pretty harsh. You are local enough that you should be able to try Bitches Brew, Burton Baton, 75 min IPA, Dragons & Yum Yums and any of their wine-beer combos. If you think their stuff is boring, I need to know what you are drinking, especially now Jim Koch has control.

Dragons & Yum Yums was like adult koolaid. Bitches Brew? I can't get on board with the mead honey flavor. Burton Baton (IPA, haven't had the English ale) was okay, but there's enough better barrel aged beer available nowadays that they've (dfh) have lost their edge. IMO, dfh is in the camp of overpowered flavors, and they just don't get nuance or subtlety. It's like every one of their beers has to be a 14" cock slap in the face. It's fancy jock beer that I find boring. Srsly, Palo Santo is garbage, and that thing they did with rosemary was just disgusting. Go taste some spontaneous fermentation stuff and you'll see how that family of flavors is more interesting while not feeling like some kind of 1990's acid-washed/neon colors/X-TREME take on flavorfullness. I honestly think most of their beers get good feedback cause they get people drunk quicker (12+%abv).

Try some Wicked Weed or if you can find it Jester King. That's how you do playful flavor profiles, imho.

Funny thing, tho, of the regular off the shelf/can find it at any grocery store microbrews, Sam Adams NE style IPA is f'ing legit. And dfh Seaquench is tasty-AF, too.

Respect. Palo Santo is woodsy crap. I will check out some of the recs you dropped. I will say that Bitches Brew is a well done play off of Tej, which is an a Ethiopian mead.
I will PM you for beer recs and find out your favorite beef haunts in the DMV. I may also want to take you up on the Aegir loaner :)

    Get thee to the Sov!

Just this past Thursday they had a huge tasting of all sorts of Jester King stuff (that I unfortunately couldn't make). Be sure to check out the events page. Tasting events at the Sovereign are really, really special. Welcome to the Lambic/Wild side.

Almost gave up on these guys cause they got bought by the dirt bags at InBev and now their brewery is filled with a bunch of fat guys on $50k Harleys, but this is delicious:
