Did you have some means of inspecting what you swept up for particles of gold? Unless each work station is hooded & air-controlled, tiny amts of metal can get loose over time.

All were air controlled. All the dust, floor sweepings, everything, went to a processor to recover the gold.

Edit: And by air controlled, that usually just meant some well placed vacuum collectors.

Apparently, it can be worked with hammers. I saw a raised titanium bowl in a gallery: quite complex, all fluted around the sides. I just stared at it, wondering how is that even technically possible? Like when I saw Lalique's famous dragon-fly woman. Plique a jour enamel to die for. The cells are huge: that thing just had to fall apart. But it didn't. Ultimate skill.

That was when I was doing my jewellery. The price of silver was pulled up by the price of gold, and my friends could not afford either. I sold all my scrap, though: about a pound of silver, for a decent price.

It was in the news that one workshop sold its old carpet from which a substantial amount of gold was recovered. Over and above their usual day-today reclamation over the years.

Sounds like a great experience. Overview of most of the trade techniques and skills :)

To chime in here, all I do is iFi stuff. Writing in threads like this one is actually my daily job and hobby to quite a degree. For years I've been doing this as a hobby and no one payed me. At some point I was simply able to convert my passion for audio equipment into a regular job, which is cool.

I build open source web apps with the federal government. Ever since the "incident" with the Obamacare app, things have truly been changing for the better. More accountability and transparency, like Murica should be.

I used to work with monkeys in a neuroscience lab at UCLA. I loved the monkeys but not enough human interactions.

Now i'm a medical scribe in downtown LA. A LOT of typing, but I love being able to listen to patient's life stories and see their physical and mental health improve after they come into our care. If you ever wondered why the doctor's appointment takes at least an hour even when you're on time/ early, it's because the doctor comes in an hour late to work LOL (she's a great doctor though)

When I was in HS I was big into the car stereo scene and became an amateur installer. I ended up working in the industry for quite a while and always planned on getting my EE and working somewhere like Phoenix Gold designing amplifiers, or Dynaudio developing new drivers, crossovers etc...

However somewhere along the way I got recruited into the (performance) automotive industry which has taken me to places that I never dreamed of, and working with people that I idolized while growing up. Now 20+ years later I'm working as a Powertrain Development Engineer at a company I always wanted to work for as a kid.

I guess I was always destined to work in one of my hobby fields, it just didn't end up being the one I had planned on...

    I'll chime in.

I'm a Vascular Surgeon. Otherwise known as a fancy pipe fitter.

I started out as a classically trained clarinetist. I thought being a musician was going to be my life. Talk about a hard left turn.

Near the beginning of this thread I said I was a former metallurgist/rocket scientist turned edumacated hobo. These days, slightly less hobo and slightly more HVAC/engineer and glorified paper pusher. I'm one step above a monkey with a typewriter. I'm the monkey that points and shouts at other monkeys, but there are still apes above me.

On one level, that's a punitive self assessment. Then again, as we all know--put enough monkeys on enough typewriters, and the result is HAMLET.

Damn, that's a jaw-dropping career swerve. No doubt the dexterity required to finger those keys must come in handy for surgery.

I'm nuts about the clarinet--in classical, jazz, and world music. A musician I know was a classical clarinet child prodigy in Cuba. He still wows whenever he pulls out his gorgeous rosewood clarinet for this or that Latin jazz tune.

Medicine is extremely cool, too. It's how I've made my living for years, though I'm well below your level.
