Here we go with the white supremacist drum.
How come you didn't link information about the dayton shooter and his leftist views?
Or the Sanders supporter who literally shot up a congressional softball game?

Same CDC study is cited a lot, but most estimates of the number of US defensive gun use are significantly higher than the number of violent crimes.

On that note, I highly recommend The Gatekeepers to anyone who hasn't seen it.

You've also referenced gun deaths and not homicides about 5 times in this thread. The bulk of gun deaths are suicide which distorts those figures.

Not really. It's mostly common sense. If you're not dependent on the government for more than the bare essentials, anything else they spend is more money out of your own pocket and it's usually redistributed to "not you". Considering many people are retirees who ideally have done some amount of reasonable retirement planning, they don't need those government services.

I figured I’d wait until the fire (pun intended) in this thread died down before posting. But I’d be professionally derelict as an American historian if I didn’t recommend Adam Winkler’s Gunfight for anyone interested in the history of this debate, going back to the Founders. It won’t (and can’t) answer values-based issues, but it does debunk some misconceptions (including some in this thread) about the history of the writing of 2A, etc.

    Totally!

Reminds me of a great Steven Wright joke:

When I was crossing the border into Canada, they asked if I had any firearms with me. I said, "Well, what do you need?"

A Rando who posted five times in a row, how cute. I hope you aren't on your Ambien.

No, it isn't fully common sense. It's people who don't want to pay for services period because here in FL we want to keep as much of our money as possible. Since you don't live in FL, you don't know how it is like here. I'm not saying how things are done in TX because I DON'T LIVE THERE. In the really crowded counties the line to the DMV for example takes a while to get serviced. If you ask the question to the majority of people that if they want to raise their sales tax to hire more workers to speed up the process, most will say no.

A few recent sales tax votes in certain counties here in FL was done in order to fix some of the really terrible roads we have here in FL. All of those votes were the majority no. Hell, in my county there's a major fight over raising the sales tax to only half a cent to fix some of our crappy schools. Personally I don't like School Boards or government in general, but I'm paying into the system and I believe we have a say into this matter.

Also you will be surprised on how many retirees want government services. Now first off let me tell you that there's plenty of poor retirees in FL. I met a lot of them in my years, and yes they never made high income to actually retire by themselves. I been noticing more workers who are retired working more nowadays at my shopping centers. I do know some of them, and without any government benefits they would be on the street. Those who have retirement planning are going to be the Upper Middle-Upper Class Retirees who move to the higher class parts of this state. They are mostly going to be white and stereotypical right-wing. I hang out with them a lot. They must have their golf & cigar sessions and Fox News on and saying racist crap.

My Father is a Middle Class retiree. Medicare paid for his heart operation, which was billed at over $100,000. Except for the Upper Class Retirees who can afford their own insurance, you'll soon find plenty of retirees who rely on SSI & Medicare A LOT. Last week at my Cigar Shop we have a huge crow of retirees that I talk to a lot. As a joke they say thank you for working so your income can pay for our Medicare and SSI.

Fun fact: Majority of them vote Republican and have no problem with the GOP reducing SSI and Medicare benefits, until it effects them. Even when it make sense to keep the programs afloat by increasing their co-pays, they will bitch and say nooooooo.

This is why I thought Medicare/Government Healthcare is a mistake to begin with. People are cheap to pay anything to begin with.

Revisiting thread. Had no idea my musing about lack of gun thread would lead to what it did. Was about to post on similar lack of golf thread (I don't play golf, but many people do, just like there are people all over the US into guns) but saw what was happening last time and decided to sit back and watch thread unfold instead.

I have a serious question now though - for those who don't own arms (not just guns per se), don't believe in individual ownership of arms, live in countries where arms are prohibited, etc. - what do you believe the least common denominator for keeping the behavior of mankind in check is? How would one prevent a tyrant or dictator from rising up and potentially killing or at least causing a lot of misery for a large or significant % of the human population? Please don't say it won't happen - all large civilizations across all cultures has shown that it eventually will (or even just 20th century). I don't ask this in mockery - I am legitimately curious to see what people think or perceive a realistic solution to be.

Interpret tyrant or dictator as you wish - literally or in a more figurative sense (some examples: wrong ethnicity in the wrong country/region at the wrong time period, wrong sexual orientation in a society at a wrong time, economic suppression where say a big nation bent on conquest can abuse and starve out smaller nations, etc.)

If this is still inappropriate to ask / post in sbAUDIOf right now, then please delete post except part about golf thread.

You’re judging societies and people totally alien in both time and space from you by your own morality. People totally removed from you do not think like you. Rationalizing what they thought or cared about or even that they thought and cared like you goes against most western philosophy. You can never truly know. The modern, western liberal worldview rests on some logically ridiculous philosophical universals. Criticizing many societies or governments, past and present for their flawed ideals when they were very successful for hundred or thousands of years longer than yours because your government still exists and claims to be democratic is ridiculous. Stalin said he was a “democratic socialist.” Both sides in the Peloponnesian War were “of the people.” Rome was still a republic of the people ruled by a not king for the people.

As for mass slaughter, misery, and suffering? Past societies mostly loved it. Even the Tibetans went out and conquered. Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher emperor, butchered the hell out of Persians and thatch roof hut dwellers like James Earl Jones in Conan the Barbarian. Whatever supernatural forces were out there were impotent to stop him. The physical forces of the universe allowed him to do it. If your current society forbids nailing people to trees, don’t worry about it. Some guy will make a new ethnicity or identity or religion in a few hundred years to do it. Some medieval writer noticed this about crazy steppe people. It’s also true of smelly European dirt farmers shishkebabing each other, smelly jungle dwellers ripping each other’s hearts out, and smelly horsemen pissed off to hell that the Chinese dare get mad at them for stabbing the local taxman.

Democracy, enlightenment, rationalism, and egalitarianism through government and institutions, with such a strong karmic vector that will lead to the United Federation of Planets where money is no longer, and distribution goods and services are from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

This totalitarianism you speak of is only possible without guns (or difficult access to). Cannot you see the peacefulness of individuals of the EU from the benevolence of their governments? It's only matter of decades before the people there become non corporeal beings of energy. Thank goodness for the benevolence of their governments and institutions that knows what is best for their people.

If this hypothetical tyrant/dictator has the support of the military, there is not much of anything regular citizens would be able to do about it. It seems to me that with what the modern military has at its disposal any insurrection would be put down swiftly and with catastrophic loss of life. I'm sure you could come up with an alternative scenario where a small group of citizens with their ARs are able to resist, but it's not credible.

People have lots of reasons to own guns: they hunt with them, they want one for home defense, they are into target shooting, they are planning to kill people with them, holding a gun makes them feel strong and they wish they could f**k their gun. All of these are more plausible than owning a gun to resist the state.

I have to disagree with you here. I'll never understand the argument that "well they have tanks/drones/helicopters so we can't win." The military is comprised of citizens the same as you and me. They may find it easier to stomach suppressing the population if they have no real means to resist, but the thought of killing millions of their fellow citizens would cause a vast majority of the military to say f**k this.

But it will never come to this because the govt will slowly and systematically remove our ability to resist before they try anything too crazy.
