My work system is described here. I use a separate 5V SMPS for the screen, and a 24V Mean Well SMPS for Pi2AES+Pi3+USB SSD. No network, except when setting it up or updating it at home. Sounds very good.

Assuming you already have an LMS server already and won't get rid of it...

Picore player is the way to go. You can control it from a phone, tablet or computer. For android, I am quite happy with squeezer (it's free), for ios ipeng is the way to go (price is around 10bux).

If your music collection is small/medium size, than running LMS on the pi is ok. I have a pretty big music (some TBs of data) collection and use a small fanless, headless windows LMS box to serve the music and have a stereo in three different rooms each controlled with a SBC-> dac using my phone as an interface.

I use Tidal to discover new music DAILY.
I like to research and tweak gear.
I am seeking more data on options, not talking to myself.
You are off WAY off topic besides being condescending.
I bet you drive a stock vehicle. ick.

So after all this, dude canceled his order! I guess pi nervosa wins!

I am sure we all wish him the best of luck in whatever path he chooses to get to the music.

    Cheers,
    Michael

I'm willing to switch to something else - just not sure what my options are. I have a few TB of music on a shared folder on my HTPC. I use iTunes on that PC, JRiver on my Laptop that accesses that library and the SB Touch. I like the touch since I don't like leaving a laptop running all night with USB cables all across the room to the EITR.

If we want to have an Internet and home network security thread that's fine, WTF it has to do with Pi2AES?

If you use the system for a single purpose, and do not constantly browse and install stupid shit, that how most of the damage is done, there are really more important things to be nervous about then network intrusion through a Rpi+Pi2AES player.
The basics security: do not run open WiFi, use a default firewall on every device that has it, unless you really know why you want to change the settings, that works for 99.8% of the people and systems. Or VPN between the player and your NAS. Lots of options. The point is to prevent basic intrusions, not hacking by someone who really knows what to do.

    I was having fun maximizing.

    Then the forum buzzkilled it.

I bought a (second) LG V40. It will be my dedicated source for my second chain and I will install USB Audio Pro and Root it and maximize it to the max. Then I will live happily ever after.

All my plans end in me living happily ever after.

Don't let your buzz die, take a few more hits and hop back on the bus. You could buy both pi4 and pi3b+ from Amazon and return whichever one you think sounds inferior in your setup. The best way to determine something like this is to try it yourself.

You call yourself "maximizer" using LG v40 as a source? Better off getting any DAPs with coax out.

Your nervosa things are quite understandable.. but using a mobile phone? Anything but that.

At the risk of repetition, I do have a question on some weird issues I'm having in my audio set up. My source is typically Tidal running on a Mac Mini (late 2014), sometimes I use Audirvana on the Mac with my music stored on its internal hard drive. My DAC is the Convert 2 and I can connect the DAC in one of the following ways:

    1. USB from Mac to Convert 2.
    2. Thunderbolt out from Mac to AES 16e to Convert2 (AES in)
    3. Pi2AES (with Volumio) connected to Convert (AES). My Pi and Mac Mini are connected on the same wireless network.

I have posed the question for connection #2 in the USB Nervosa thread. When I use the Pi2AES, the sampling rate with the Pi is invariant at 16/44.1. Currently I am playing music at 24/96 and Audio Midi shows 24/44.1 and I am unable to change the sampling rate in either Audio Midi or Audirvana.

In all cases, I use the Word Clock in the Convert and switch sample rates manually. Do you have any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong?

Can you see what happens if you allow the DAC to operate in automatic mode? The AES data is encoded with its clock, so I am not sure how introducing an independent clock would work. I admit my lack of knowledge about this type of set up, so if I am completely off base please tell me so.

Could you check in Audio Settings of Audirvana that you have selected “ No Limit” to Maximum sample rate under category “ For Bridge Device Connected to a DAC” . Also give Audirvana extreme priority in preference and let us know. Also do check that if yellow LED glows in Pi2AES when you play 24/96. Atelast we will know that Pi2AES is getting 24/96

Question: How much difference does it make to use a hat like PI2AES with optical or coax instead of plugging a DAC directly into the Pi USB ports? My DAC is a Schiit BF2 and it sounds pretty decent from the PI4B USB.

Coax >> USB in that scenario. Get the HAT.

From looking at the Power Supply of the default Pi4, USB is going to be noisy.

I think black background and hence better imaging and detail retrieval are the few things that you will notice

@Ksaurav402, I have selected the "No Limit" option under the said category. However, I think I have solved the Audirvana issue. In the Audio Output Selection option, I had selected my Pi as a DAC. I changed that and selected the Pi as a network player. Lo and behold, everything is fine and I do get the yellow signal now for 24/96 and 24/192.

    Thanks man.

Please let us know if you hear a difference between the PI2AES hat vs straight out of the Pi's USB port.

I'm pretty happy with my Pi4b feeding a modi3/magni3+ stack straight out of one of the Pi's usb2 ports. In my own fit of minor nervosa, I'm powering the Modi 3 via its auxiliary power input, and have deactivated the wifi and bluetooth antennas on the Pi in an attempt to reduce any extraneous electrical noise in the Pi. I suspect my setup (ending with HIFIMAN HE400S and 52-year-old ears) is probably not resolving enough to hear the improvement that the PI2AES hat is supposed to bring...

Will do. The Pi2AES hat arrives tomorrow so I should have some opinions before the weekend. The Pi4 has been running Volumio for a couple of weeks now and I have to say- it sounds pretty darn good with USB into the DAC. That may be due to the Unison USB though, so no guarantee my experience is universal. In any case, I’m very much looking forward to a nice long Pi2AES listening session with my clears.

I can’t say enough how much I like the rasberry pi as a music streaming device @purr1n did a public service with his dummies guide.
