Toto Washlet/bidet defeats the toilet paper/paper towel hoarders of America

It has arrived, and was very easy to setup after watching Toto's YT install vid, maybe 20-30min including watching the video. Introduced to me in 1999 during my first trip to Japan, this marvel of modern technology had me amazed. I always wanted to bring one back, but the difference in voltage and messing around with electricity in the bathroom never really appealed to me. Then when they arrived domestically the price was through the roof.

With the stupidity of the people buying and hoarding 10 cases of toilet paper and paper towels at a time, I needed a way to minimize TP usage and discovered prices on these gems have come down significantly. I purchased a Toto A100 for $200 which is their base model, but it still has a really good feature set. The pressure adjustment for your derriere can be fine tuned very nicely, and has a mist, or jet stream function, as well as pulse. The stream or mist can be adjusted front to back for the perfect cleaning. The ladies also have their own settings on top of the two butt settings. A heated seat and water setting with variable temperature is also included, what else could you want? Actually the higher end models have such features as deodorizer, pre-mist for non stick toilet action, air dryer, auto open/close lid, and of course a night light.

Since I don't have a GFIC socket in my toilet room, I had to run an extension cord out to my bathroom sink area, a small price to pay for such a luxury as far as I'm concerned.

    Sorry, no action shots.

Yup, the seat cover came with a crack in it and a replacement is alread on it's way from Amazon.

After the first use while typing this, I have to say this was a damn fine purchase. I'm not brave enough to go completely paperless yet though. For now one or two initial wipes to knock down the debris and a final drying wipe after some jet stream/misting action is going to be my routine for a little while. The chains of TP reliance have been broken, and is a purchase totally worth it in my book.

Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore...

These toilets are amazing. Congrats on your purchase! I'm a little jealous.

Newer homes in Taiwan come with them pre-installed, and I love mine. I find it a PITA when I have to take a second dump at work midday

It’s a bit of a shame that the controls are in English - there’s nothing quite like being an illiterate newcomer to Japan and pushing buttons randomly, hoping for a flush but getting a squirt. Could you change the labels for guests?

When we remodeled the bathrooms, we installed a toto "butt washer" toilet for my daughters shared bathroom. Its a higher end one with a remote control.
Had it for a while now, and its been very reliable. No idea how often the features are really used, not going to ask. ;)

My biggest problem with it is I have trouble telling when I'm dry

We also have outlets installed by most of the toilets in case we want to add more butt washers.

I think a lot of my friends who take trips to Japan, when I ask them how was their trip they always mention the bidets.

Kinda want to try it out myself, I know a few Japanese places in the area with some Toto ones in their bathroom.

Why? What did the poor girl do that she would have to relinquish control of the butt washer to someone else?

Have used bidets for a while myself and have actually tried a few different ones from different mfgs. Had one until recently. Can only say going back to no bidet is like going from high speed ethernet to dial up - do-able, but it feels primitive. FWIW, from everything I understand (and my own use over several years), these don't eliminate the need for TP - it just reduces how much you have to wipe.

For those who want a "simpler" one or something cheap just to get through this period of sporadically no TP, there are also models out there that don't require electricity and typically end up being <$100. Remove old seat, install T adapter and secondary water line to feed water to the bidet, done in <10 min. Biggest downside to these is that only cold water comes out.

Also note that some bidets are way too short (front to back) or sloped in the back (which keeps you from sitting towards the back - essentially making it too short) for the average adult. This is especially the case if you try to bring them in from Asian/EU markets.

EDIT: See page 4 for one I just installed.

    Don't forget these other downsides:

    1. On/off (with pressure adjustment) dial can be very touchy. Each micrometer of adjustment increases the pressure by 10000000%. If you're very, very careful, you can get three outcomes: a useless trickle, a moderate spray, or a water knife.

    2. Spray pattern is pretty messy.

    3. Still requires a healthy amount of toilet paper to finalize cleanup.

And since this is a rather sensitive area, water pressure control is pretty crucial. Plus I really don't want to spray cold water down there.
The electric ones let you move the spray, control spray pressure, and even pulse.
The one we have also has the lid and seat lifter/closer.

I want one with Alexa capability so I can remotely "remind" people with a little spray that others might be waiting to use the bathroom.

I made the mistake of showing this thread to my other half. We're getting a bidet. I am picturing a horror scene with a garden hose and a water damaged apartment.

I think this review has inflated the prices for these seats! The C100 in round is $366.

Is there a model that plays 'Africa' when you lift the lid?

-Some are quite touchy yes. Others are not. Depends on how the valves inside are implemented.
-Spray pattern is usually dictated by the nozzle head on manual ones. One I previously used had interchangeable nozzle heads for this reason.
-If water is not hitting ideal areas or sprays too strong then yes.

The same manual one I had that wasn't overly touchy also had adjustable pressure but not position and pulse. I've seen other non-electric ones without adjustable pressure but adjustable position (last time I think it was in China in a hotel somewhere - don't recall) - didn't use this bidet though - IMO bidets, despite the fact that most are self-rinsing, should not be publicly shared items like they are in much of Japan unless the thing has built in sanitizer that can clean the wand. Especially given that most bidet wands are plastic and not stainless (which is easier to clean / inhibit microbial growth).
