Dammit. Some friends asking for toilet paper? Why are people buying all the toilet paper from grocery stores?

No kidding. I mean, a two-week supply shouldn't strip the stores of their stock.

I've seen people trying to flip TP on ebay. Man, truly it is "the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine."

Ran around for a normal grocery run Saturday night. Ralphs and Vons ran limited hours - the only place open was Whole Foods. This was just after 8PM.

Whole Foods was empty aside from bulk dry foods, which is surprising given that's the most doomsday-proof food you can get. So got a bunch of nuts, beans, rice and lentils. Funny enough all the produce was gone aside from habanero peppers. And nobody was buying spices and seasonings either. Or cooking oils. Guess people are going to eat bland stuff for some time.

After Whole Foods, I went to Namaste Spiceland - an Indian grocery store also close by. Their supplies were fine, nothing was out of stock. So got some spices and interesting foods I'm excited to try.

I also just read gun sales are up, now that is scary.

I kind of understand people buying tp, I don't understand why everyone is buying water.

Was at Costco in Hawthorne on Friday after work. Surprising well stocked, and not that crazy. No wait to get in and crowds like a busy weekend.

Was also curious and asked one of my friends in NYC, and he said it's because people are anxious of a possible quarantine, and toilet paper is one of those necessary consumables that can run out.

There's still some people in the US who only buy and drink bottled water; they just don't trust the tap. There's also some fears of the pipes/faucet-head etc being contaminated, and some people don't want to take the risk. I don't agree with both of those things (I feel grateful that the bay area has good quality tap water), but I can understand why they do it.

Here in Italy everything is locked: people are only allowed to move only for work, medical reasons and buying groceries; you can go out for a walk with your dog, but without going too far from home and avoiding all social interactions. School and universities are closed, same for club, cinemas, pubs and restaurants. You see people with masks everywere and roads and cities are emptier then a post apocalyptic world (well, maybe no, but we're not that far)

I'm pretty sure stores alreadyhave more water & paper in the back from their latest shipments, but are slowly bringing them out throughout the day, as to not have them be raided immediately.

First case reported in my town... Also in the supermarket today some lady aggressively invaded my personal space while everyone is supposed to keep at least 1.5m distance. I felt like coughing just to prove a point. She almost pushed me away...

Guess you really get to know people when they revert to some of their primal instincts.

I have been around a while at 71. I have never seen widespread panic like this. Big snows and hurricanes with power off for days, but everyone helps each other. Not now. Women fighting in grocery stores over a loaf of bread when there is plenty for sale. Governor closed all public schools in the state yesterday for at least two weeks. I bought what I needed and am ready for most anything for a while. Yea, I got my pump shotguns and plenty ammo. I sure hope it doesn't come to that.

We're getting close to lock down but it's to prevent turning into Italy - last night the City of Calgary announced a state of emergency. Frankly I'm all for it. Schools just got closed early and that was a hard decision I'm sure. The lower income, single parents are going to have a hell of a time now but I hope the government/employers come up with something quick to ease their burdens. Everyone for the most part that can work remotely are. Testing centers are going full bore - it's one thing the provincial government should get a pat on the back for.

There is pretty substantial hysteria here w.r.t. not having resources for a couple weeks. I'm quite concerned that the people who need them the most (ie: seniors) are not going to be able to get them. For better or worse, I'm not personally concerned about not have enough of X.

In Hong Kong, there was a rumor toilet paper was going to be in short supply so people rushed to buy all the TP they could, thus causing a TP shortage. In reality there was plenty of toilet paper.

Then in the rest of the world, that caught on. I read two other articles with a few more theories. One being that because of scarcity, and we seeing empty shelves of TP, we want to buy TP before we lose the chance to buy TP. I bought two giant bags from Costco, when I rarely buy that much TP.

The other idea was that because we want to feel good, and TP in our minds is such a basic necessity, we buy excess TP to feel safe.

I am reading too much into toilet paper with this virus spreading around.

If you're really worried about toilet paper, see this thread

I've thought about getting a 2nd, less fancy one for the master bathroom (daughter's of course have the fancy toto), maybe this will be the reason to do it.

    As for water
BTW, here in LA the water can be very bad, but I figured most people have filters or something so they don't have to drink tap water.

Panic buying in earnest, enough so that grocery stores are regulating the volume of people they let in (imagine that!) at any given time. Tap water not necessarily safe to consume for many so bottled water distributors also hit hard, never mind cleaning products and sanitisers.

A large chunk of the country under "enhanced community quarantine" and the President (whom I'll refrain from calling names because I like being alive) lit a fire under most people's butts via a charmingly misinformed speech, spurring them to panic.

Entire internship grading may be deferred so yay for not finishing up yet. Sisters' final competition before leaving college cancelled and NMAT potentially delayed so they might be floundering for a bit in the worst case scenario. Also, everyone's strongly discouraged from leaving their homes because the country doesn't have nearly enough testing kits for the 100M+ denizens of the RP. Luzon has only a bit less than half the country's total population.

Yet I'm just whining. Locked up and bored, minor troubles for grades and all, but safe with some supplies to last. Others live in genuine fear and can't afford not to head out to work or wherever, risking themselves and others. Non-regularised employees are worried they may be unable to make ends meet. The country has a relatively young population but there are many too who are susceptible to harm and death from this. I know a few suspected of having the virus and they're terrified.

Good news, locally developed testing kit now available and being rolled out. Around $150 so expensive as f**k for many, but it's... something. Hospital capacity isn't overtaxed yet to my knowledge, and many large companies are taking measures to ensure that the proliferation of the virus is curbed via home quarantines. It's something.

It's all remarkably fucked. I do understand the reason behind the fear but the extent to which people are making life hard for others under the guise of protecting themselves is fetid dog vomit stoked by misinformation. Hold your breath for ten seconds my left testicle.

A person is smart; people are dumb.

Went grocery shopping at Meijer this morning around 7:30 am. There wasn't many people there, they were out of paper products but other than that everything was business as usual.

I bought about 4x what I normally would just to stock up since we never did after our move last month and our fridge and pantry were basically empty. Some old guy saw me with 2 carts and said "it's not like the world is going to end!" I told him "I got kids to feed!" I don't but it was funny to see the look on his face.

The Province of Quebec is allowing restaurants to stay open, but has asked that they limit attendance to 50% of capacity. If the same rule is applied here in Vancouver we'll be sweet - the places we go to, 50% capacity would be about 3x their usual business.

Just been out to buy paint, thinking we could get something productive done in the new digs if isolating. Apparently everybody else is thinking the same way; the frazzled-looking paint-shop guy said "people are buying paint like it's toilet paper today".

Here’s a really bad one that made me chuckle.

Guy posts a wanted ad in Craigslist’s relationship:

Given that there is some evidence that anabolic steroids, CBD, and antimalarials protect against the Coronavirus, we have a great setup for a dark comedic sci-fi dystopia, where the only surviving humans are gym bros, potheads, and the odd do-gooder/sciency-types who had malaria at the time. The jokes write themselves.

Just attempting some levity...please, everyone, be safe...and do not take health advice from me! (Or anyone who isn't a medical professional.)
