Italy is a strange case. My heart goes out to the people there, big time. I wonder what it really is about them that's making it seemingly so much more devastating over in their country specifically.

We really do not know if the Chinese data are the order of magnitude off or just a little skewed.
NO2 is the major indicator of industrial air pollution.
From the NASA satellites, Bloomberg etc reported on it, the level of NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) over Wuhan, and the province of Huvei that was almost down to zero in Dec, Jan, Feb started rebounding as early as March 3. Now they look like almost normal. So they cannot be dying right by hundreds of thousands and returning to norma traffic and industrial activities. . the pictures from Dec, Jan Feb were almost clean.

Italy will not be unusual in 7-10 days. They will only be able to say “we told you so, we tried to warn you, America” without feeling guilty.

To all of the people that deny or still want to talk about the Flu or want to talk about alternative treatments: this virus is NOVEL = new. All bets are off, "say your prayers and take your vitamins".

The numbers reported for all of this are not trustworthy since there is a lack of testing in the U.S. Flu numbers vary because people don't die of Flu but only from sepsis from secondary bacterial infections like pneumonia. This is the same for Coronavirus.

Everyone will eventually get it and either do fine or not. This is how these things go until a vaccine (that works) is created. Using medications may help in some way, but there is not a miracle cure, no silver bullet. The one physician to listen to is Dr. Fauci.

Technically a lack of testing means the percentage of mortality might be extensively lower. Again the problem is how it spreads.

My edit was just because I don't feel like it's productive to laugh at non-authoritative businesses whom are often not any better than say, China.

Trump changed his tone after hearing a UK prediction model that says over 2m Americans would die. Even after accounting for strict lock downs that projection was only cut by half.

The models were simulations using data from China and possibly Italy. China had thousands of deaths but very strict quarantines and had lots of beds, isolation units, respirators once they finally came to grips with how bad the outbreak was. And that still took 2 months from January to March to get shit under control.

Italy's healthcare system was overwhelmed by coronavirus and now doesn't have enough PPE, beds, respirators. Not to mention they are doing strict lock downs and the numbers are still rising at high rates. Italian doctors have to make calculations on who to dedicate their resources to vs those who have the higher chance to survive.

USA we know, our healthcare system is shit. We do not have enough ICU beds. We don't have enough respirators. We are only now doing the lock downs well after we have thousands infected. We don't have enough tests. We are on a crash course to repeat what is happening with Italy.

They often say, what happens in California is often an indication on what is going to happen around the country. So what is happening in LA? We are giving up on containing and moving towards treating only positive patients.
    https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-03-20/coronavirus-county-doctors-containment-testing

Know what the fallout of lack of testing? People who likely have covid 19, in their 40s, are dying because they are not getting a test.
    https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2020/03/20/san-gabriel-man-dies-not-tested-coronavirus/

We are going by numbers as we shelter in place at home. Comparing covid 19 to the flu? Covid 19 is worse, several times worse in multiple ways.
    https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2020/3/18/21184992/coronavirus-covid-19-flu-comparison-chart

Things are soon going to get pretty bad if we just assume the growth rate in USA mimics China and Italy. Stay safe friends, don't go to spring break like some of those dumbass kids.

What happened happened because Rome was doing the big brain ostrich move.

You can see how well that went in the death counts.

Oh yes, FL. FL will sooner or later will need to be more strict. However, I did stated earlier today that when I was at my Cigar Shop even the Jacksonville/Duval County Sheriff came in and was getting some cigars to destress. No social distancing in that place, Sheriff could had shut the place down. People in the shop were still saying the government is overreaching their authority there while Fox News was placing on the background.

I know one thing, even if most things will shut down in Jax, the cigar shop has some VIPs who will stop in (a lot elected officials from State/Federal levels from Conservative politics) will keep the place open. I do know from speaking to the shop owner that the big cigar warehouse down in Miami is closed down. Stock will be getting limited soon, woo.

But I still have my shop when I need to destress, also another woo.

I'm truly hoping that we find treatments first. A friend told me one reason China might have lower numbers is a working antiviral - but hey, that stuff is hard to know right now for sure, sometimes things are just rumors in that area of the world.

Vaccines make sense, but they're somewhat limited for elderly effectiveness. Any doctor can tell you they are more and less effective year to year, and that it depends a lot on the patients own immune system. Where as an antiviral I should hope could be fairly universally effective. But in order for that to work we certainly need more testing.

Even if we get amazing treatments like antiviral, we will still have localized outbreaks most likely. They won't be big problems, but it might take a little time to be knocked down to being another cold or something.

*Oh, and I'm curious how much they're using plasma for treatments. I don't think we have data on that yet? I'm also not sure how those who have recovered feel about being looked at like bio-bags of goodness.

You know you're ageing rapidly when kids partying on a beach make you want to smack them upside the head. Then again, they're being proper jackasses this time around so I'll cut myself some slack

Have you personally seen this? The news seems to like to scapegoat the young on this whole subject. We know not everyone is doing their part, but I think it's ridiculous to get upset at very small amounts of people that are young, jobless, no money, nothing, being seen together. Going to the grocery store is a thousand times worse.

We'll be OK in California. The rationing is logical since we cannot mobilize that quickly. China with its centralized command economy a la Palpatine's Empire will always be better than the West at doing certain things at scale in an immediate fashion, e.g. manufacturing masks, constructing makeshift hospitals, massive Death Stars (albeit with serious defensive weaknesses), making people disappear, etc.

As far as Trump, he is no less a hero or villain or wise man or fool than Merkel or Macron or whoever is doing the bunga bunga in Italy, or the idiots at the WHO. I'd rather focus at the CDC who initially wanted all testing in the remain in their domain rather than enable private labs and hospitals because of gov't vs. private turf wars. Trump is just an idiot who tweets random stuff that ends up undermining him. Anyone who listens to his tweets and believes them without a grain of salt or Trump-filter is an idiot.

Lots of people are bitching, but pretty boy Newsome did good here for California. This action will define him and Newsome knows it. He'll be a hero with a feather in his cap for his POTUS run 2024 or 2028.

P.S. Nice to see folks in the neighborhood take walks. I don't think I've seen so many before. I feel like I'm in a Chinese neighborhood (where it's customary to take leisurely walks after a meal - there is actually a word that precision defines this action).

Over in my coastal town, everybody has pretty much been treating this like a vacation. It's not just young people. I swear, yesterday EVERYONE was at the beach. And if not, they were crowding local restaurants that were still open... so yes, it seems a lot of people in Florida genuinely DGAF right now.

Jesus. Stop being a contrary ass just to try to prove how much more enlightened and intellectual than everyone you are.

College kids are dumb. There were dozens of large parties in Boulder on St Patrick's day that we're broken up. Surprise, it was all college kids on the hill.

I'm fairly young and I actually take a lot of offensive at the attitude towards my generation - and not just about corv19. The vast majority of us are doing our best to do our part. But the reality is it's the second crisis in our lifetime that is seriously screwing up our ability to prosper. This time it's completely willingly for the benefit of almost entirely others.

You're reading my replies how you want to read them. I don't even think about your accusation of enlightenment/intellectual posturing.

Look, my own kids are already saying shit like Boomer Remover. You have practically zero chance of dying from this, and if it does get worse, impediments to your prosperity will only get removed. Corner offices will open up, entitlements may again be viable, housing prices will lower because of vacancies, etc.

At this moment, you are fucked a lot less than a Boomer who just lost 50% of their 401k. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Boomers had to live through shit like the 70s oil crisis when they were young. If you ever spoke to any one of them about it, they would probably opt for this than the oil crisis.

As far as "college kids are dumb". I'm sure @zerodeefex and I were just referring to ourselves as well. We were dumbassses in college.

Looks like he found being here as an impediment to his prosperity.

No one here should be blaming every youth for doing that. Just the ones ACTUALLY DOING IT.

I've been a good little shut-in the last few days so no, not personally, but having been a stupid college kid and (personally) knowing people who spend their tuition money on vacations then freaking out when they find out they might not be graduating due to outstanding fees I'm inclined to listen to the burgeoning curmudgeon in me and agree that recklessness of this nature is a hallmark of youth.

Of course the media coverage is biased— total objectivity in reporting is a pipe dream. That said, there are enough kids who have precisely that "I'll be fine, no worries" mentality the world over that I often feel an urge to punt a coconut into one of those kids' faces.
