@brencho came by and we came up with the idea of a virtual meet. Maybe a quick topic or Q&A on a headphone or other piece of gear, measurement discussions, etc.

This Saturday 8am Pacific time? To account for other timezones and EU?

My circadian is already kinda borked again so 8AM Pacific/11PM my end is no problem. It kinda makes sense that my first larger headphone meet is a virtual one, lol.

Think it'd be a good idea to shortlist gear in this thread, as might happen in an actual meet one? Just so people get to organise notes etc.

You "stole" my idea, I made a profile post about it. :p

On a serious note I am happy this is going to be a thing. Can I be shirtless showing off my fat? Maybe not.

I'm ok with 8 AM PST since it will be close to 11 AM for me.

Well, I think we need to figure out the common platform for this. What's a good video conferencing app these days? I thought Zoom is getting some bad flak... but ultimately, it's not that bad (we use it everyday at work).

Didn't know what Zoom bombing was until a few days back, some of that is legitimately sick. Made me ill thinking about it.

But yes, besides me wanting to know more about things I'm unlikely to encounter on my end like EC or Aurorus stuff, plus how they're likely to go with my gear, I think discussion about measurements and interpretation might be cool too! Kinda a shame there's not been more done yet with burst responses but I get they seem a pain.

Well, the short form, I think... is to use measurements as confirmation for what you are hearing, and not the other way around (i.e.: please don't use measurements to infer how something may sound like to you).

That said, measurements are very useful when you are working on mods or tuning your own gears. I'd say if we are going to talk about measurements, then perhaps they should be talked about in that context. For instance, I'm creating a headphone, so I'd use measurements to confirm if something I did actually "made a difference" or not. Sometimes a difference is audible but not visible at all, and vice versa.

It's not very useful to try and "interpret" measurements of other gears in any other way IMHO. Most of the time, I read people's impressions more than their measurements.

Also this is why I keep cautioning against a "flat line" in FR. It looks objectively enticing, but honestly, it doesn't say much, and I personally prefer a downward slanted slope, even on my own measurement rig.

Who is this open to? I can see it full of Randos asking about T2 Pros vs. M50 vs. skullcandy.

@Bill-P Haha, don't worry, I'm not going full objectivist. I meant something along the lines of seeing X happen in distortion with Y as a feature in FR maybe due to resonances in cup cavity, or how in some headphones (e.g. Grados) extremely open designs and the physiology (?) of baffles influence perceived sound in a certain way.

One thing that I read ages back that REALLY stood out to me was this quote about Koss PortaPro measurement null:

I'm just kinda dweebing out about how much nuance there is in transducer designs so curious how simplistic measurements might "catch" features like that. Low priority shiz, talking synergy and gear is more interesting, I'm just having fun learning about something so far removed from what I study :p

My son's school from home Zoom got temporarily stopped. Evidently weirdo 50 year old dude showed up.

High possibility links get shared on Reddit and we end up talking about Skullcandy or Topping.

Maybe first meeting will be Friends and Contributors only.

Could also make a SBAF Friends discord so we can chat easier.

My former teaching colleagues were having a Zoom meeting with every science teacher in the District. Someone hacked in and showed a porno. I can’t get a straight answer as to how long they let it play! :D

I don't actually dislike either of those. They have their place in the overall scheme of things.

I used to recommend Skullcandy all the time on headfi simply because their warranty/replacement program was amazing (no idea if it still is, this was back in the early 2010's?). The brand overall was a lot of meh, but there were a few ok choices in the lineup.

Topping was also a common rec for me back in the day, mostly for their compact tripath amps. People just getting into bookshelves looking for a tiny amp better than the crapola dayton or lepai amps they were getting from aliaba. Well alright, grab a Topping T-whatever. It's the size of a paperback book, costs $60, call it a day.
