When there is a line more than 3 or 4 cars, I've found it's actually faster to park the car and order inside almost ANYWHERE there is a drive through.

And allot of places prioritize dine-in over drive-thru. I usually go inside just to make sure my order isn't fucked.

Californians are lazy and don't walk. They would rather walk on a treadmill in a gym or drive to a place to do hot yoga than to get out of a car and walk. They would prefer to drive to a place across the street than to walk. Another reason could be that is there no place across the street. So this accustoms folks to driving.

Having both dine-in and drive-thru creates chaos inside restaurants. I went to In-N-Out this week when we were out getting groceries and they were drive thru only with two order takers. The line moved so consistently every 25 seconds that you could set your watch to it.

We have Chick-Fil-Lay down here. That's the chicken joint with the million cars wrapped around the lot.

In our defense, that Popeyes chicken sandwich was pretty tasty.

Visited my sister yesterday. My (old and grey) dad was there too. Everybody was healthy so the quarantine must have effect. We all live a part so different parts of NL.

One thing that worries me these days is the fact that the media are milking the Covid19 crisis like fat cow without thinking about the consequences. One recent development is that a mobile application to track the virus might be in the works in NL and immediately the state funded media in particular start polling like crazy.

Sorry, a mobile application with unknown specifications and unknown functions that has not yet been tested cannot even be experienced. Nope the state funded media start polling because "entertaining the masses" has priority. Is it so f'ing hard to have patience and not do something stupid?

In NL in general there is this ambivalence regarding privacy. I mean we have something to hide? More privacy! We get discounts and free stuff? Here have my data. It is detestable. I personally avoid such things. When I have the money, I get it and I am done.

If a mobile application is to be launched and implemented to track the Covid19 virus there are at least a dozen questions you have to answer to make the settings work:
    1. Mandatory or not mandatory?
    2. Minimum amount of participants to have a big enough population (for data-analysis) known?
    3. How is the tracking method defined?
    4. Can the tracking method be continually updated?
    5. Anonymous data or personal data?
    6. Meta-data tracking included, if so with full transparency?
    7. Bluetooth and WiFi?
    8. Only Bluetooth?
    9. 4G and 4G plus also used?
    10. Bluetooth, WiFi, 4G and 4G plus all used?
    11. Checks and balances, who controls the application on a national level and who keeps that agency in check?
    12. If you refuse to use it, will it be punishable or will people only be disappointed?
I could go on. Thing is a non-existing application is being popularised before it even exists, is tested and in the end who will pay for it? Money is not the most evil thing here.

Combine data, meta-data, GPS patterns of where people go during the day accurate to the second and you enter "1984" and the state media do not question the risks.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. We live in the f'ing 21st century. Will people not learn?

So far, all the observed processes are being prepared for the scenario "1984"

I don't know what NL might be doing, but the Apple/Google contact-tracing system -- and systems being developed elsewhere in Europe -- work to protect privacy as described in this simplified comic: https://ncase.me/contact-tracing/.

Opt-in, no user identity collected, no location collected, no easy way for a malicious actor to mine data or metadata for any private information.

I do not trust the Dutch government and the EU enough. There are mostly good people in the right places still. But their grasp of technology and how it can affect society is sometimes so bad, it makes us Gen-X and millennials facepalm instantly.

There are idiots in high places that cannot be trusted. When you look at geo-political developments and the global trade relationships of the past decade combined with how certain governments tend to dislike the freedom of the Internet, my doubts only increase. I will not mention specifics but I am worried.

A new disease can be taken care of. Control systems that approach totalitarian wet dreams, oh damn...

After I told my wife an anecdote with the words "chickens" and "barrels" Google began to flood me with contextual ads about poultry farms and barrel manufacturers.
I made the right conclusion, bought a phone with buttons for $12 with a detachable battery. I don't need a Navigator, I know the roads of Moscow by heart, and I can use paper maps. The smartphone is only in the workplace for messengers.

It's not paranoia, it's just an unwillingness to share your personal life.

Yeah, but Popeyes only good if it was made in a poorer parts of town. So in Jax we have a Popeyes in the nicer part of Jax and plenty in the poorer parts of Jax. The one in the nicer part of Jax is terrible. The one near all the shootings is great. Too bad I poop my pants if I have their chicken nowadays.

My coworkers and I had a long discussion about this last week. Our company was able to work through remote connectivity issues in about 2 days, which was my main fear that would prevent me from endorsing this. I've changed my mind from , "This sucks, can't wait to get back", to " Wow, I'm more relaxed now and like the extra time that I'm saving from the commute, etc."

Using Agile development we already have short daily meetings to give status updates. Work is definitely getting done. And now I don't have to listen to the chic 2 rows over with the screechy voice that talks too loud. A couple of people thought that management would never go for this long term, but who knows now that we've been forced to do it and things are still getting done.

We could probably get rid of half our leased space or more, leaving room for labs and temp work areas. Maybe we go in 1-2 days a week for lab work and large meetings. This sounds like a better way to save money than laying people off if it ever came to that while the economy gets back on track

The downside is that it would hurt our local economy to a pretty fair level. Being a very large employer on a main road, that has a lot of businesses that chose to build near us for the daily traffic levels, it would be bad for some businesses. I guess the same is true in other areas if you factor in many small businesses that no longer have employees showing up. That would have a similar effect. People would probably frequent neighborhood bars, markets and mom and pop joints more often.

Yesterday I went grocery shopping and went to a Chinese supermarket in Monterey Park, large Chinese population. Grabbed a shopping cart, an employee had one side of carts that were wiped down, one side to return used carts.

Right from the get go, sign posted on the front door saying if you don't have a mask, you can't enter. Every single person in the supermarket was wearing a mask. Lot of people and narrow aisles so it was tough maintaining social distance.

Didn't spend much time idling in aisles, went in to grab what I was there for and headed to check out. For the most part, things looked quite in stock.

Checkout was interesting to say the least. Every checkout lane had plexiglass to divide the cashier and the customer. The cashiers were decked out head to toe in ppe. Mask, gowns, gloves, face shield.

Got beer so I got carded, it was hard to make heads or tails what the cashier was saying with so many layers separating us but I took an educated guess she wanted to see my id. I put my wallet on the plexiglass and I guess she made a comparison to my eyes since my mask obscured most of my face.

Paid with my credit card, grabbed my groceries to put in my car. Returned the cart and went upon my merry way.

Saw my local 711 also did not let people in without a mask. They had plexiglass up to separate customers and the cashier. No cups were out, had to ask employees for a cup for coffee/soda/slurpees. Sign on the hot cheese dispensary, no cheese for the time being. Cashier wearing masks and gloves. Indicators of the ground where people were to wait in line 6 feet apart.

Life under Coronavirus, the businesses staying open are making additional expenses to keep their employees safe. I appreciate that.
