Closed form factor of UV light is very similar to Wii controller. UV light auto turns off when closed, or when the bulb is rotated up, so basically you have to sanitize with the light facing down. Takes 4xAAA batteries and can also be used without batteries and USB power only.

Okay, so who's going to do the measurements, @Hands?

And @james444 how about some killer mods?

Generally (but specifically too) because I was wondering this before... If a UV light is strong enough to sterilise, isn't it strong enough to damage eyes?

Yes! I really doubt these inexpensive battery powered low watt UV-C wands are powerful enough to sterilize porous masks but I can't find any peer reviewed studies showing efficacy. The units used in hospitals use much more powerful UV lamps. However even low power UV-C wands could potentially cause eye damage. You should be wearing sunglasses that are rated to block UV-C rays if you use them.

Yeah, that's likely why they have the interlock that turns off the light when it facing upwards.

I have a little UV sanitizing box that you can put your phone, keys, etc. in although I'm pretty sure it's primary purpose is in making me feel better about doing something to help rather than being an awesome disinfectant...

So, possible that it does something, but probably not very much, and it has a safety lock that means you can't point it up at your face. If it actually is powerful, I'm sure that much lock wouldn't pass muster.

I'd love to have something to sterilise my phone. And you know what they say about a computer keyboard having more germs than a public-toilet seat? Mine's a champ... once you clear away enough cat fur to reach the germs.

I suspect that the wand I need is probably not available to the general public. :(

(But hey, at least I don't have a beard)

Sorry Captain assumption, it doesn't claim to sanitize a porous mask.

As well as eyes and skin, UV-C will damage plastics and pigments. So probably not the best solution for frequent disinfection of phones and keyboards.

If this was directed at me the website advertises the UV-C wand right next to the masks. Anyone visiting the site would think the wand is intended to be bought to sterilize the masks. Now granted, the masks and wands are being sold at better prices than you can find on eBay or Amazon which is nice. There are no warnings on the website that the wands can't be used to sterilize the masks nor that eye protection should be used.

Edit: if you want to build a 36 Watt UV-C sterilization box and know what you are doing Brian Crabtree has a build guide here. Scott Coppersmith sells them prebuilt for $700. NFI and realize these bulbs are powerful enough to blind you if you looked at one energized outside of the box. Schanitize could probably build something similar for less than half that price which would be a great public service. Might be liability issues that would keep them from doing so though.

Well... They only have two products.

I didn't assume they were meant to be used together.

    A little cranky this morning?

I'd say it's similar to the claim that ozone generators can kill the virus. Sure, ozone (like UV-C) can kill the virus, but it requires a dose 500 - 1000 times higher than household generators can produce (which, btw, would be toxic for humans).

My hairdresser got scammed into buying two €1000 ozone generators for her shop. Use caution and common sense, folks!

Thanks for that, I didn't know.

Well, I suppose I sort-of did: I know that sunlight degrades certain plastics and fabrics, which is what causes that horrible polypropylene rope to be short-lived, and most people know that it fades stuff. But not which UV a/b/c does what, and I would never have thought of it damaging my keyboard.

Damn. I'm always on the lookout for no-effort ways to do chores. This is just another idea that didn't work out.

What the f**k, it is not normal to assume the wand is being sold with the intended purpose of sanitizing the masks just because they're the only two products for sale on the site.

Not once did I think that when visiting the site.

If I started up my own little online shop, and for some reason my only two products were a butt plug and BBQ sauce, would you assume that I intended the BBQ sauce to be used as the lube, and then say in addition, "Well, it doesn't say the BBQ sauce isn't meant to be used as the lube!"? And would I then have to tell you to not put the BBQ sauce in your eyes on the site somewhere necessarily?

Yeah, I know, my analogy doesn't have to items that share a theme (at least, not necessarily), but you know what I'm going for.

I absolutely would, but hey... it came as a shock to me to discover that Al Jolson wasn't actually black.

(Look... I was a little kid, ok? Sheltered, middle-class-white-English upbringing. Lots of things subsequently came as a shock to me. And it hasn't stopped yet.)

Depends on the BBQ sauce: east NC vinegar sauce or Memphis molasses sauce?
    Asking for a friend.....

Custom spec. Very runny, dries very quickly, kind of gritty, and burns like hell in any hole.
