The first two parts are wild and super ridiculous (The first part is meh). The third part is more normal but still bizarre. The 4th and 5th are much more normal with much better writing imo. I rate them all 8/10 except for the first part obviously.

Some fights and characters are so f'ing epic that I would advise any shonen fan to at least give it a try. Watching the first season (part 1&2) will tell you whether you will like its ridiculous and bizarre nature or not. You really can't judge it from the mediocre part 1.

Rewatching Votoms, a classic 80s action/mecha anime. Very fun anime. The complete collection of the tv series and ovas recently released for $50 on Amazon. I recommend picking it up now because the price going to blow up when stock runs out.

Ive been lurking on this forum for quite a while before I joined and I didn't know there was an anime thread!

I havent had a lifelong exposure to anime outside of the usual stuff like DBZ but have really gotten into it in the last couple of years. Mostly watching more recent releases but try to watch the more highly regarded shows from the past in between. I dont really watch any other media outside of anime right now. Behold an outpouring from someone who doesnt get to talk about anime with anyone!

    Subs, not dubs (unless unavoidable)

Recent/current watches (apologies for spelling mistakes) in no particular babbling order:
Tower of God - better than I imagined. Held off on it for a while as the hype machine turned me away.
God of High School - probably going to drop it
Dururara - quite good, S2 tailed off a bit IMO.
Food Wars - watching season 3 - I enjoy the hell out of this show, I watch it in bunches and then leave it for a while
Made in Abyss - I know some people are put off by the animation style but this show was tremendous combined with an excellent score
Avatar - currently in season 2, surprised by how much I enjoy this
Konosuba - I loved this, one of my favourites so far
Gurran Lagaan - felt it kind of lost its way in the end but was enjoyable, some epic scenes
Devil is a Part Timer - excellent
Dorohedoro - cant get in to it
Demon Slayer - overhyped a bit but can really nail it at times
Hellsing Ultmate - just started, looks good so far.
Dr Stone - perhaps the most overrated new show I have seen, watched almost all of the first season out of a hope it would turn in to something better, but no.
Great Pretender - interesting animation but not engaging for me, dropped for now.
    Parasyte - Really good
Death Note - havent finished yet, actually got bored with it, seemed to go in circles for a while, will finish it at some point.
    Psychopass S1 - excellent
Fate whatever whatever - not bad but didnt feel l like getting involved in the whole universe
Re: Zero - havent started season 2, this show has the most wasted potential, still interesting but frustrating to watch at times.
Overlord: Great season 1, the rest of it was a drop off.
Assassination Classroom: Good, havent finished it yet.
Hunter x Hunter - yep, thats a classic
Seven Deadly Sins - great characters, a bit goofy at times, not sure if I can tolerate the recent seasons animation debacle
FMA Brotherhood - deserves its high praise simply for the arc of the story.
Deca Dence - started, saw where it was going I think and have stopped for now
No Game No Life - not impressed
My Love Story - one of the most charming shows I have seen in a while, not finished yet.
Baki - just awful last season IMO
Megalobox - better than I thought it would be
B13 - Netflix show, seemed to fly under the radar a bit. I thought it was good.
Devilman Crybaby - I can see why people would find this one good but it was off putting.

There are probably a lot of shows I have forgotten that I really enjoyed and probably some that I truly disliked.

Anime I havent started yet but will at some point:
Steins;Gate, Your Lie in April, Girls Last Tour, Angel Beats, Gintama, Violet Evergarden, Eva,...

Post was long enough so didnt want to get over detailed, plus didnt want to risk any spoilers (unless opinions on general quality are spoilers)

Still have a lot fo to look at. Mobile and streaming services makes it a lot easier to watch these shows.

Manhwa is A LOT better at thoroughly explaining the folk lore, character motivations, and the intricate game details.

I had similar thoughts but I would stick through it for a bit longer, but it will get a lot better soon ;) as usual, Manhwa is a lot better making us care about our characters and villains. I still prefer Tower of God much more though.

Oh man, wait till Season 3. One of my favorite western "anime." I've rewatched the series couple times and still excellent. Korra is okay ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shonen done right basically. It's simple but really nailed the formula. Future seasons will be much more interesting judging from the manga

I actually loved season 1 for its refreshing premise of returning by death. Season 2 is really good so far. Explains some of the mystery behind some questions.

    YES YES YES

I suggest picking up Haikyuu!! as well. It's one of my all time favorites along with Hunter x Hunter and Full Metal alch.

Haikyuu is on the radar. Who doesn't want to watch volleyball anime. I watched a YouTube review of it just recently that really gave it a push as a must watch. I'll have to see how many season or episodes it is. I dont want to start watching something that has like a One Piece episode count. Just looked it up, its a manageable number.

I have gotten the impression that S2 of ReZero does accelerate things, there were a lot of WTF moments in S1 and the dialogue can be too much. Watched a bit of the first episode of S2. The series is torture porn at times.

Im right at the end of S2 for Avatar, seems to be getting a bit darker in tone. Not sure where it is heading, Given its an older show its less likely I'll run into spoilers but Im trying to be careful. Im just really surprised about how much I am enjoying it. I thought it was a kids show that had nostalgia driving it but its just plain good.

Ive seen reviews and read online that the manhwas are impressive, especially for Tower of God. I was surprised at the complexity of it and there are some deep back stories that need sorting. God of high school Im still trying here and there, started off great, thought it was going to be an easy watch, well animated tournament arc show but then they reminded me of the opening scene and have gone on a tangent I dont know if I care enough to follow. Needs a bit more character development.

A bad but good show is a new one called the Misfit of demon king academy. It has been described as being No Punch Man given how ridiculously overpowered the main character is. I look forward to new episodes and its mostly pulp, but fun.

Ive tried Inspectre but lost interest, Beastars is nowhere near as good as everyone said it was, IMO and I stopped watching. Id - Invaded was actually surprising for me. Gleipner - could have been great but got weird really quick and has "fan service" scenes that are completely unnecessary. Like I said, I watch a s**tload of anime.

In terms of more modern western animation: Archer is OK, Rick and Morty is OK (at times brilliant but up its own ass too), but my favourite is the Venture Bros.

I probably am not in to manga/manhwa/webtoons as I was never into comics as a kid so the natural extension isnt there.

My first post in this thread.

Just want to introduce myself as a J-anime watcher.

My all time favorites below (by a random order). Wikipedia links attached.
    • Sound Euphonium : Love both seasons and the film (Liz and the blue bird) particularly. Oath's Finale wasn't bad at all though. It's also worth carefully listening to its soundtracks -- they're performed and rendered to exactly fit with character and plot development progress at which they're played.
    • Steins;Gate 0 : I prefer zero to og because they not only differentiate themselves from VN but also "evolve" over VN -- not very frequent in J-animes based on VNs. VN zero was super meh to me, but animization could make it successfully resurrect. By contrast, S;G OG couldn't wow me much as I found VN's alternative per-character endings more in line with my taste.
    • A Silent Voice : Fantastically beautiful. Extremely polished and delicate presentation at every moment. Characters are moderately multi dimensional (Naoka, a female villain, made a huge contribution in making drama not boring).
    • Patlabor : To be specific, Patlabor 2: The Movie is one of my favorites that I keep returning to on a regular basis. Plot and lines are very intellectually stimulating. Ironically it largely betrays the identity of the franchise as robot anime. lol
    • Revolutionary Girl Utena : Another masterpiece I love forever. Both TV series and film (Adolescence of Utena) win the perfect score in my book. Ikuhara, the director, could put surprisingly deep philosophical thoughts into the anime in very unique ways -- multiple themes iteratively develop as the story makes progress. Music and visual presentation all support such themes super cohesively. This anime really contain too much information thus scales well with serious watching and thinking on watchers' side.

A man of culture. I can respect it. But I gotta ask... have you seen Mawaru Penguindrum? I'm always curious, because I feel like I can go either way with the two.

Happy that you mentioned that. While I wasn't smart enough to understand its real messages yet (I feel like I may have to re-watch it again many times before raising any points), Penguindrum anyhow achieved its tasteful take on vanguard in destroying and criticizing formal structures we used to like in animes. Put it differently, it really feels like a post-modernism work in both positive and negative ways.

I personally think there are too many unexplained parts (specifically in later half of the series) -- or metaphors I couldn't fully understand -- but still not sure if they're all intentional or limitation due to (only) 24 episodes. Maybe both. Oh well. Utena was way, way, way more straightforward and comprehensible to me.

Nevertheless, I love its presentation to say the least. What's your thought?

Just watched the intro OVA for Noblesse. Its the latest manhwa adaptation on CR. Animation is more traditional compared to Tower of God or God of High School and is generally quite well done. Its not a completely original concept but there is enough in the OVA to make you want to watch a few more episodes. Vampire show (still watching Hellsing Ultimate so Id probably finish that first before taking Noblese up).

Finished Avatar, clued in to how they were going to end it a few episodes before it finished but still way worth it. Not sure if I'll look into Korra but probably will try it if I can find it streaming anywhere.

Also finished S1 of Saga of Tanya the Evil - its a more complex, mature and intricate show then I first imagined when I started it. One of the better things Ive watched recently.

    "Your Lie In April" ...

Finished this recently and have been thinking about it for a while. Read some reviews about it after I watched it to see what those who did not like it thought and why, if only to provide context for my opinion as critically thinking about it you could pull out some things to bitch about. However, I loved this enough to almost want to start online arguments with people who dont (not going to but just saying).

This is one of the best pieces of serially produced TV shows I have seen in a long time. This show executes emotionally in a way that I haven't experienced in a long time. Just WOW. I guess Im not the cynical bastard I thought I was and Im happy about that.

This is one of those shows I am thrilled to have watched but also wish I didnt because of the impact of it. I need to watch something easier next to regenerate.

Also watched Haikyu!! I couldn't stop watching it once I started - true binge watching with this one. Really fun and looking forward to the next instalment.

I’m deciding between Eva or Steins gate next. Both are on the heavier side I imagine and will require a good deal of my attention. Or maybe I’ll catch up on re:zero.

Went through Isekai Quartet as rehab from Your Lie in April - wasn’t as charmed by it as I had hoped for. They managed to capture some of the elements of the original series involved in it but still kind of missed the mark. Only 15 minute episodes. It’s an easy watch.

I didn't quite understood it until I read more about it. It seems the writer had a lot of problems with depression. And folks with similar problems got a unique perspective with Evangelion.

The last arc is so on the nose it's crazy. When I first saw it I was deep in a longstanding depression. That was a very long time ago now, things are much better now that I recognize it as a comorbidity that I can manage indirectly. I'm at a point now where it's something I recognize as a symptom of something I know well. But back then it was really a shock to the system to see, just because of how stuck I myself was. It's hard to explain, but you knew it wasn't just coming from some stuff he read about. Anno was living it, and it was there for all to see. There was a lot of pressure and ambition behind the project. But Anno struggles with real deal clinical depression. Towards the end it all got to him, and what we got was a rare symbolic look into the depressed soul of a man crushed under the weight of the world. I loved it for that. It inspired me to try to understand what I was experiencing better and in some ways marked the beginning of change of heart for me. I vividly recall just being obsessed with the project, and the story around it. It spoke to me in ways nothing overtly about depression ever did. It was just so visceral. If you knew, you knew and it was obvious. To everyone else, it was "What a mess." To people going through it, it was beautiful.

From Anno himself, in a pre-production statement on Eva:
The entire spectacle of the series, from within and beyond, out on the meta level, is exactly what it is to live through those cycles of total loss of self and rebirth. Chronic depression is *just* like that. It's a perfect microcosm of the whole battle. Years of barren soil, overtaken by an unstoppable bloom, and then finally fire... and if not that, rot. Rinse and repeat.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner! I meant to, I swear. But I do largely agree with you. Utena was actually a very tight package... just nothing superfluous. You always know what you're biting into, even as things drift into the abstract. Part of the genius is in how intuitive it is, even as it delivers these very layered messages across its scattered and deconstructive presentation. Penguindrum really went over the edge on the back end. But I found that I enjoyed the ride. Have a couple of drinks and let it take the reigns and sort of just be mystified. I can go in for that like I can go in for Mind Game. Sometimes it doesn't have to make sense.

Buuuut... I get the impression that it was meant to make more sense than it did. I remember the word 'pretentious' getting tossed around a lot when it blew up. But I don't think it meant to be. I think there is a singular correct interpretation. It just became so abstract and referential that it's hard to make out. I think someone who's studied literature for real would catch most of it. And maybe they'd just roll their eyes at how pedantic it is. I honestly knock it more for that. When it wasn't totally confusing, it was ham-fisted. In terms of visuals and screenplay, I loved it. It's a fun ride. But no Utena. I enjoy it no less, but not at all in the same way. I think a lot of people were let down by that, thinking they would get a second coming and it just was not that at all.
