In the stereo speaker listening world, resonance and/or vibration control is an audible big deal. I have tried lots of footers, racks, points, balls, cups, squishy things, wood blocks, etc. And I had my speakers all set..............or so I thought.

I recently moved the entire stereo speaker setup into a bedroom in order to more properly control the acoustics with treatment. It is still a nearfield setup like in my big room with listening done at about 7 feet from the speakers. I had been using Herbies Fat Dots between the speaker cabinet bottom and the stand (in this case old school album storage blocks and they are coupled to the thick carpet with wood blocks). Previous experiments with footers under speakers led me to the conclusion that these dots sounded best especially in the bass.

But my good friend (who just completed another pair of crazy good speakers) said why not try wood blocks again and if you have some spikes try them again. Well, let me tell you.

Three small squares of poplar under the speakers and some old rather expensive brass cone footers under the bottom album crates and you would think I went out an bought a new component. Yes, it was that BIG of a change. And to think I had this stuff sitting around is even icing on the cake.

Moral of the story is do not be afraid to try things you may have tried in the past, you may like where the circle takes you.

What is the actual theory with direct coupling (e.g. spikes) and isolation (squishy things)?

@yotacowboy has hit the nail on the head. All I know is speakers, the things they sit on, and stuff in the room, and the room itself... resonate. And they can all affect the sound we hear.

I just use what sounds most pleasing to me.

Speaker manufacturers manifest their ideas in their designs with some making mass dense cabinets and some like Harbeth using lossy cabinets. Then when you look at listening rooms some folk put highly excitable and resonating objects in the room like acoustic guitars and some audiogeeks even place little expensive bell like bowls on the walls.
