Yeah, that seems like a nice alternative to the expensive full metal g shock. Ends up with a pretty similar result.

 

I don't think that I ever would have gone with the proper full metal g shock, but at $110 or so all in, this is pretty cool. Fully reversible, too. The main capsule itself isn't touched, so I now have a 200M "dive" watch for the vacations that I won't be going on for at least another year.

Other metal-ways are available too, if gold or camo are more your style.

 

Recently, added two watches to my collection, first one's a Tissot PRC 200 Autoquartz. Yes, that's right, it's both an automatic , as well as a quartz watch. I'd never heard of such a watch so it caught my attention, I got it from the seller, but it'd scratches on the bracelet, bezel and buckle, so I promptly sent it off for polishing. Got it back after two days and it looked almost brand new.


The Tissot I had ordered almost 3 weeks back, yes it's another Tissot (the Autoquartz was an impulse buy), arrived yesterday. I ordered it because I was smitten with its looks, my pic doesn't do it justice I'm afraid.


Last but not least, since it's watch related, I got myself a watch winder so that I don't have to constantly change watches (wear two automatic watches at home for a few hours before I'd swap them for another pair). Now, I can put all my watches can be housed in the box.

Bringing out the lilac numerals in this otherwise understated Datejust that has been a trusty companion this summer and fall.

 

Someone talk me out of dropping $3K on a Grand Seiko Quartz GMT. I don't understand why I want this watch but I can't stop thinking about it. It makes no sense.



My wallet keeps saying, "Stop thinking about this watch you moron. It's a quartz watch! Yes, it's thermo compensated and only gains 5-10 seconds per year. Yes, it has class-leading finishing. But it ticks!"

Help me get over my sick obsession. I know its just the COVID isolation that is scrambling my brain, making what to spend money on feel-good trinkets.

In all seriousness, there are some very nice quartz watches out there. I guess let me ask a different question - would you be able to unload it for minimal loss if you didn't like it?

 

Grand Seiko's seem to hold their value pretty well. Obviously not as good as Rolex but better than a lot of other brands. I also wouldn't buy it without trying it on in person. Luckily there is a GS boutique in LA.

 

GS definitely has a great Quartz heritage, but still...if I were going for GS I'd save a few more pennies and go mechanical. I am a sucker for simple, no-date watches. Just my 2c and an excuse to look at Grand Seikos .

 

@TheIceman93 A few things to consider...first, many modern Grand Seiko watches are high beat. Even the non high beat ones (the 9S64a above is one example) are in house movements that must be serviced by the factory at not inconsiderable. In contrast, quartz has many fewer moving parts and the battery replacement can usually be performed by yourself.

On the other hand, if we're talking about quartz accuracy, citizen has much more accurate watches per dollar and their high end HAQs are insanely accurate. But this might be a little academic since functionally you'd probably never notice the difference between a 10 or 5 or 1 second per year watch.

And then there's Spring Drive, which is unique to GS (and yes, I know about Piaget's $70k experimental project) and offers substantially better accuracy than the hi-beat mechanicals. A little bit more pricy, but you get the smooth hand sweep and you might be able stretch out the service intervals since the regulating part involves no parts that physically touch each other.

On a 4th note, Japan also has some excellent indies. For example, check out Hajime Asaoka's Kurono line if you want something with a little more flair and uniqueness than Grand Seiko.

From what I gather the Snoopy 50th allocations are all gone (in the USA). Oh well, maybe dodged a bullet - the more I thought about it better to keep those funds in liquid savings during these times.

My parents ended up with a non-Covid major health expense several months ago and I was able to quickly sell my Daytona for a decent profit so that I could help them out, so cannot say that specific watches like this are a bad investment.

A good quartz movement still feels like quality on the wrist. I borrowed my friend’s Seiko Tuna for a couple of weeks and I didn’t mind at all that it’s quartz. Just felt like a quality watch.

 

Thought I wanted one out of silly-ness 2 or 3 years ago. Yet the more I see this watch the more I still want it. I almost like how it feels a little dinky and underwhelming, etc etc. yet is still a nice daily watch at the same time. I would actually wear a watch most days if I had this. It also manages to not yell "entry level pissing contest watch" that a lot of the more popular / common rolex or omegas yell in my opinion (kind of like buying a bmw 320 or mbz cla250)

Kind of wish I had bought it sooner though - the price keeps going up. Maybe at this point I'll just get something else, etc... but nothing else I've tried jumps out at me and is comfortable enough for me at the same time.
