Now I am curious. I reached out to one classified to see if they are still available.

I had HE4 but much preferred HE500*. The “haze” description sounds right from memory. HE4 was more Stax Lambda (open and clear but HE4 more v-signature and bass extension) and HE500 was more Grado. I hope Im not way off base it was a while ago. *My upchain gear probably affected.

HE5XX tape mod (inspired by prior)

Note that a large part of the effect can be obtained simply by applying tape to the six spots where the hooks of the earpad grab into the slots. Simply tape around the slot, over the inside lip, and shove a bit under. I just taped extra all around because I could. It might be a better idea to use electrical tape. I couldn't find my roll so used scotch tape instead.

One thing to note that my stock HE5XX measurements didn't roll off anywhere as much as Takato's seen here.

This next one is on the EARS. I think the EARs is reflecting more of what I'm hearing. This is getting really really good with much smoother response. That is you are good with a slightly-dark tonal signature.

That is quite an improvement. Not only the bass, but also that 8k peak. Well done.

It's dark sounding though with a slight scoop in the presence region, so may not appeal to everybody. I mean, this totally suits my preferences. The thing is that the stock tuning can probably be said to be more "fun". I can see a lot of folks who came from peakier headphones preferring the stock. With the mods, there seems to be a little bit more heft. The bass is really really nice - reaches low and stays very clean. Presentation is still bit soft like all of the non OG HFMs.

It’s very interesting that Hifiman orthos have always sounded better than their technical design would suggest and Audeze orthos have always sounded worse than their technical design would suggest. When the first lcd-2 and wooden he5 were released everyone in the ortho thread (seasoned members are probably the most knowledgeable people in the world about ortho headphones and the only thing I miss about head-fi) was very excited about the lcd-2 and had pretty negative predictions and opinions of the he-5. The og lcd-2 sounded like complete garbage and the successive hifi man orthos sounded at least listenable. The trend has continued. Though perhaps at this point an A model lcd4 sounds better than the best from hifiman. I don’t know I haven’t heard either.

just goes to show how complex the seemingly simple technology of ortho headphones actually is.

Doesn’t have the heft of 4XX which makes it feel kind of cheap, but lighter is better. Koss 95X looks/is plastic but is supremely comfortable. Bigger slightly vs 4XX, so “level up!” Mine do not have any signs of bad paint or parts coming undone. Didn't break in transport which I did experience with a 4XX, so “extra life!”

5XX sound neutral besides a treble spike. I hoped for a tad warmer sound, but 5XX is not like Sennheiser 6XX (modded), Grado Hemp, or Porta Pro which are all on the warm side. An 8kHz spike as also seen in 400i and less so in 4XX seems to annoy me more than others. The 5XX mod appears to relax this peak, so will mod right after some stock measurements. If that doesn't work out then I'll refund. Doesn't sound more resolving than 6XX. Not more exciting than Hemp besides soundstage. No comment on planar bass yet, but doesn't strike me as the main attraction like upon first impression of 4XX. I'm just already fatigued with this treble peak... done listening.

EDIT: Click here for my newb measurements, you already read my newb review so might as well.
EDIT2: Maybe it's not a 8kHz peak but that whole rise in treble that's off putting. I remember the 8kHz peak in 400i and 4XX being more annoying/unpleasant (splashy cymbals) than fatiguing.

It's confusing trying to decide which thread to post in ...

If by "5XX mod", you mean the blu-tack leak fix, I didn't find it did much for the treble peak, but bass is defiinitely flattened and extended, possibly a bit tighter.

After taking the pads off (carefully), it wasn't super clear how the "ring" (right below) comes off. But it basically is only loosely snapped into place, so you can safely just pull it out. I lined up the "tack" (in my case Faber-Castell) as shown in @takato14's photo on crap-fi. I used a bit too much as it took quite a lot of screwing down to get the ring back into place, so I would use about 2/3 what you see below.

    HE5XXa.jpg

You'll probably need to press the ring to snap it into place as you tighten down the screws, depending how thick your tack is.
    HE5XXb.jpg

As I said, bass is heftier and more extended. Still too tizzy for me though. I tried a very thin ply of el-cheapo freebie Taiwanese gas station tissue but that didn't do much. Two plies might work, but that would go against @rhythmdevils 1st Law of Planar Modification. So instead I tweaked the peak with EQ using Marv's FR/CSD as a guideline and it's sounding smooth and warm now.

    HE5XXc.jpg

Source was LC v1 balanced. I tried it briefly out of SW51+. Low Zout was a bit brighter than LC (as it is for other phones), and High Zout was much brighter. Not sure what the interaction is with the HE5XX's impedance being basically flat.

I sprayed some 75% isopropyl onto a kitchen towel and wiped down all the non-metal surfaces. This took away enough of that plasticky smell that I can stand to wear them now.

hey that’s ideally. Ideally you do all the tuning with the driver and damping behind the driver. But open back drivers tuned to have no damping give you little wiggle room.

as @purr1n said, sometimes it’s better than the alternative even if it’s not ideal.

that being said I never do it and if it comes to that I deem the headphone a failure and work on something else.

but I dont work on neo orthos much. Open back and tuned bright with no damping? Bleh. Maybe you could find some pads that make them darker, then add damping to the back which would make them brighter, giving you room to tune them. But not sure that’s worth it with this phone.

One of the biggest problems with hifiman orthos, and it looks like they’re still doing this, is not sealing the earpads to the baffle. Which decreases bass immensely meaning the driver has to push a shit ton of bass out to compensate and the extra excursion can only mean loss of resolution and more distortion.

Anyone with an he500, try putting tape around the gap between earpads and cup on the outside of the headphone, easily sealing them without anything complicated or any disassembly. Soooooo much bass!!! Not even beats bass heads would approve.

sealing earpads to the baffle is ortho 101. Like first chapter in orthos for dummies. A little intentional leak that's controlled is something that’s possible but this isn’t intentional it’s just ignorant.

Flat but low (c. 17 Ohms as per purr1n's measurement) and voltage division between headphones and amp. The high Zout of the amp (26 & 54 Ohms on lo & hi respectively) is taking most of the voltage, leaving less V (and therefore P) available for the heaphones, and the hardest-to-drive frequencies are the first to suffer.

Heads up. Ugh. Doing tape mod with electrical tape and can’t get pads to snap back in. I think my electrical tape is too thick (Super 88).

The other thread seems to be focusing on Drop-bashing, so I'll continue here.

I started out intending to tape seal one side to see if it affected the bass, but got sidetracked and learned a few lessons about what (not) to do when modding these.

I found my ears touching the screen in the pads and thought it was my tack-mod that pushed up the mesh covering the drivers. So I cut it out, thinking that the pads would protect the internals from dust, hair, etc. But this wasn't the reason the screen in the pads was touching my ear. There just isn't enough clearance inside the pad/screen itself.

But when cutting out the mesh covering the driver, I got a better look at how poorly the foam is sealed around frame, and went all OCD about getting a "perfect" seal. First, I tried to fix the foam that wasn't placed properly..

    Do NOT do this #1:

I used some round-ended tweezers to try and lift the foam up and stick it onto the frame. But I didn't realize the diaphragm was so close and accidentally put a small rip in it ... AAAAAARRRRRGH!!!

Then I thought, it's right at the edge, so maybe I can just use some tape to seal it so that air can't pass through, and the tension and extra weight/mass won't affect things too much.

    HE5XXd0.jpg

*Spoiler: the fixed rip doesn't seem to affect the sound.

So instead of trying to shift the existing foam, I then filled in the gaps with more tack. I'd originally said not to use too much, but you can see where some parts of the black foam ring (covered with mesh) don't have any residual tack from my I first attempt. So I filled in all the gaps and low points and made sure the tack on the inner face of the ring was the same height before putting it back on. I'm pretty confident I have a good seal between the ring and the driver assembly now.

    HE5XXd1.jpg

When lifting off the first ring previously stuck with tack, the entire driver assembly pulled out with it and it was a PITA to feed one of the wires around the driver frame and inside the housing.

    Do NOT do this #2:

So I pressed down on the magnets to hold the driver in place while pulling up on the ring. However, the magnets are quite brittle.

    HE5XXe.jpg

    Faaaaaaack!!!!

I tried using pliers to pull it up, but the magnet started to chip and flake. I wrapped some tissue over it, but couldn't get much grip with the pliers to lift it. I wasn't able to move it much, if at all, but there seems to be enough clearance that the diaphragm doesn't touch the magnet. I cranked bass test tones down to 20Hz and couldn't hear any buzzing, so I think I'm okay.

I can't say for sure, but with the improved seal the bass seems more extended and fuller sounding (probably wishful confirmation bias after all the damage I did). And I can't hear any difference between L/R with one of the magnets broken.

Back to what originally sidetracked me away from @rhythmdevils' "tape around the outside of the pads mod". Now that the mesh was removed from the driver, I stuck 2 little blobs of tack onto the magnets (very gently). Then I pressed the screen in the pads onto them and this pulls the screen away from my ears so that it doesn't touch them.

    HE5XXf.jpg

    ... The End

oh, PS: I still haven't taped around the pads and housing, so maybe someone else can try that.

it really sucks when stuff like this happens. I’ve irreversibly ruined a couple orthos trying things. Sorry.

But my point wasn’t necessarily that you should be sure to seal hifiman orthos. Like I said, when you tape around the outside of the pads/cups crack on the he500 you get HUGE amounts of bass. My point was that if they had sealed the pads to the baffle like they should have, they could have tuned the driver to output way less bass and this version of the driver would likely sound much better in multiple ways due to not being forced into such heavy excursion to compensate for the lack of seal. Just think about it. Details are created by very tiny movements in the diaphragm. So if it’s having to move that much it’s going to be more difficult to perform more subtle movements. Plus cause more distortion.

But you can’t change the driver tuning. So sealing the pads to the baffle of hifiman orthos is probably generally not a good idea unless there are other mods that reduce driver excursion. Added damping behind the driver would do this but it would also tip up the upper frequencies which are already peaky.

But maybe sealing the pads to the baffle works or helps with these I have no idea. Hifiman defies many rules but roughly throws things together with decent tuning in mind and somehow often winds up with something pretty ok. Except maybe not lately according to what I’ve read about all their new nano diaphragm orthos. Seems the do random shit and tune the final package approach hasn’t continued to work.

Leading up to the delivery of the HE-5XX there were numerous complaints, some did concern me. Firstly the one that concerned me was the lack of bass presence, some mentioned that the bass was lean, it dropped off too early, it was one note etc. Now when I put this on for the first time I frowned, not because of anything bad but because the low bass presence at 20hz was more present, higher in level than my Audeze LCD-2; I'll touch more on that later. The other big complaint that went on for a while was the HE-5XX being a re-skinned Deva. Purrin did a great post on that. Even before Purrins post, I really don't care if the HE-5XX uses the same drivers as the Deva, it's not uncommon for headphones to use the same drivers, Fostex reused that D2000 driver how many times?

The Deva wasn't really a successful headphone so if they can use a driver that is capable into a new product, cool as long as it sounds good. I do feel that as audio enthusiast we can be big baby's sometimes regarding this stuff. The whole Deva thing has overshadowed what is an amazing performing headphone for the price of a night out.

I'm not going to touch on that anymore as this headphone offers a lot of positives.

I'm going to be completely honest here. When I had them on my head, I wanted to immediately post about this headphone. How can this sound this good. How did Fang allow it to go so cheap? why are people not raving about this more. All this went through my head. I decided to hold back, new toy syndrome is a real thing, I felt the Same about when No Mans Sky was released and 3 days later I thought the same was boring. After a reasonable amount of time, my impressions didn't change. My Audeze LCD-2 would be on my head and I would want to reach for my HE-5XX. The headphone that cost more than 1 months rent in London that I paid an extra £200 for the Carbon Fibre headband which means you're branded and staying in my collection, was relegated to the box which had been used as a foot stool.

Without sounding like a FOTM headfier, this headphone f'ing rocks.

    The HE-500

We all love this headphone, I was around the time this headphone took a backseat to the original LCD-2 but good old rebel Changstar knew what was up. While those on other forums were falling for the hype of the super liquid gold mids of the LCD-2, Pyrates saw what the HE-500 offered. The speaker like presentation, natural mids without any heavy recession, nice smooth ortho transients along with some funk in the treble which gave them a better sense of air than the LCD-2. The HE-500 was a better headphone than the LCD-2 unless you were lucky to get a good unit then you'd be looking at a more relaxed side step. The HE-500 love power, ate it up, sounded amazing the more you fed it depending on the quality of the amp of course. The HE-5XX takes some of what the HE-500 did well and adds a modern take on it.

    HE-5XX impressions

    Gear used -

SDAC + Asgard 2, this combo brings nice extension, slightly warmer, smoother presentation, it's been reliable and a good reference for me. I didn't find it to scale much going up but this pair has always punched above it's weight by offering good price to performance. The Lyr3 + Asgard 3 has gobs of power, stock is adds a bit more cleanliness to the bass, background slightly cleaned up. Asdgard 2 a tiny bit less defined but more enjoyable, cosy sounding.

    Bass -
If you've head the HEK variants, Arya, Ananda, those lost some of the heft the OG's like the HE-6, HE-500 had and became a more delicate, graceful, wide open and spacious kinder sound. You could argue they became less versatile and became more of a flavour headphone. The HE-5XX on my head give me a good amount of bass response, more heft than what the Ananda gave me which I found almost perfect for my taste, but the weird compression, lack of bass excitement made he LCD-2 win over for me despite the Ananda being a better headphone in my opinion. The HE-5XX still retains the massive open sound of the Ananda and Arya but I feel the body of the bass is much improved. Low rumbles at 20hz are felt, it feels cleaner in the bass than the Ananda which I felt carried some audible distortion. It doesn't have the same bass density as the LCD-2 but it does have a bigger sound in the bass. Imagine having two pieces of wood, one is an iron wood but a smaller cut while the other is a bigger wood but is made of Balsa. The HE-5XX is the Balsa, it's bigger but less dense, less immediate, less focused. This goes with the nature of the newer Hifimans, the more floaty, airy sound gives the bass a more atmospheric type of sound although it is less focused as a result of this and personal preference will kick in.

    Mids -
This is where I feel the HE-5XX is closer to the HE-500 than other Orthos. Yes due to the wider sound, it is slightly lesser in body compared to the OG Hifiman HE-500 but I feel it shares a similar timbre. Voices, instruments mainly strings I would argue sound improved because the HE-500 had a tendency to sound a little congested, muffled where as the HE-5XX sounds more vast, you can more easily distinguish voices, background sounds/instruments better than the HE-500 or say a HD650, Aeolus. This is a great acoustic instrument and folk singer headphone, strings just sound incredible and female voices addictive, the Ananda gave me the same impression here. The HD650 is a headphone that feels more personal, singers can be right in your ear due to the FR that gives it that type of sound, I always felt instruments can be a little blurred, lacking definition sometimes and the HE-5XX gives me some of the similar magic of a good timbre but with more definition and space between things in the mix.

    Treble -
I've always felt the newer Hifimans just agree with my ears, due to them not sounding intimate, certain peaks that would otherwise bother me on other headphones just don't on these, I believe the larger drivers just work with my ears, I like possibly more intimate headphones the peaks just shaft my ears where as the more open spacious headphones that have more driver surface area to play with don't, who knows. I hear the treble as ever so slightly unrefined compared to the Hifiman Ananda, it isn't peaky or harsh just a little bit of a rough treble, imagine a radio signal that is one away form being cleanly tuned; I feel the HE-5XX is just a tiny teeny bit grainy here. Please note this is only in direct comparison to much more expensive orthos and on it's own, it isn't a big deal and even in comparison isn't a big deal it cost a fraction of those so can't have all the cake for $220(£170) Very open, extended, airy treble that current Hifmans are known for these days.

    Detail, Resolution -
When it comes to detail capability, it is, in my opinion on par with the Ananda in that you're able to separate everything with laser focus and clarity, you might think I'm crazy, I don't care; this headphone has amazing detail retrieval for the price. The Ananda and Arya are both more refined headphones, the clean treble of those headphone is what I feel you're getting when you "upgrade" to those. Resolution wise, ability to extract those small details I would say the HE-5XX is competent and is close to the Ananda, a bit behind. I feel something like the HD650 is better able to extract those tiny details because being a competent driver and a much more intimate headphone you're able to hear into the recordings better but then I find the mid bassy can put up an obstacle. Plankton isn't something I chase as much as I do timbre, as long as it's good enough, I'm not losing those small details, it isn't a deal breaker, luckily the HE-5XX is good here.

    Soundstage & Imaging -
For those who care about it, I've touched a bit about it through the write up but the sound is massive. Ananda, Arya fans will feel at home, just a wide, open headphone with sounds floating in and out. Current Hifimans shine here, I believe this is due to the lack of dampening and how large and physically open the headphone is. You can see through the driver. It truly is a real open headphone and what I mean by that is many that are meant to be open have so much dampening they're practically semi open. The open nature gives the soundstage perception a sense of listening to speakers in a large, open windowed room. Imaging wise, I feel these can sometimes feel a little defuse compared to say an Audeze or HD650, they certainly don't sound inaccurate, most headphones don't but some just sound more pin point than others. These imaging about the same as your other modern Hifimans.

Some Tracks I like with these -

    Miley Cyrus Zombie Cover -

Coming from an Irish background born in the late 80's growing up in the 90's this song is special to me. The original was the first song I learnt to play on my guitar and I listen to it every day. R.I.P Dolores you beautiful soul. Miley does a damn good job here, her husky voice is very unique, when she sings this cover it is a really unique take on the song and I truly believe Miley has found her calling with this type of music. I've always liked Miley, she got a late of hate for her antics in the past but she's always had a nasal, folk singer tone to her voice and has actually shown some versatility coming from a country background, to pop to now rock covers. Many won't give her, her props but I'm impressed. The HE-5XX gives a nice separation highl9ighting her voice on a large stage, the iconic opening of the song sounds epic through these and the heavy nature of the song is well displayed.

First to Eleven Boulevard of Broken Dreams Cover -

This is a lower quality recording but her nice voice along with the bands energy on stage comes through wonderfully. The HE-5XX is able to highlight the distinction between singers in their voice as well as the HD650 and I love the contrast between those two headphones, one for a personal experience, the other to experience the band in a room. Great cover, great song, great band.

The Witcher Lullaby Of Woe -

Wow, these Hifimans are made for this stuff. For those who've played the Witcher and it's expansions will know the creepy orphanage scene in the expansion. The creepy instrumental in the background is so haunting, chilling through this headphone and as her vocals come through and take the focus, leaving enough resolving capability to keep the instruments in focus kept me so immersed into the song I felt the terror that this scene brings. Love it. The Witcher soundtrack in general is great through this, always a personal reference of mine.

    Blink182 I miss you -

Love this track, usually a track I like on Audeze headphones but I've gotta say the HE-5XX stole the show, it shows it's able to show good range and versatility to become a great headphone for bobbing your head and enjoying classic rock bands. The HE-5XX is able to offer a nice robust low end I felt drum hits nicely and guitar strums with voices wonderfully separated, a warmer track and came across warm and engaging for me.

    Overall -

So as of writing this impressions, I've decided to sale my Audeze LCD-2, that headphone was one I thought I'd keep but I found the HE-5XX did everything I love about the LCD-2 and offered a more versatile performance, it had slightly cleaner, more dense bass than the Ananda which was my only complaint and offers a more musical. fuller midrange and treble extension over the LCD-2. When my LCD-2 goes on my head, all I could think about was my HE-5XX does this better. I feel silly because this isn't the most expensive, or luxury headphone out there, it seems rather simply put together, but it just sings man, it has heart, character, it offers everything I loved about the Ananda in a cheaper package with to my ears, improved bass response. It offers more bass level than my LCD-2, lacks the density but does so much more right than that headphone. I'm baffled as to why people are complaining about this headphone, not subjectively but they're talking about all this deva shit, who cares man, listen to the headphone, it's so good. 2020 has been a weird year, but I've felt budget headphones have been stealing the show, the HD560S offers a new take on the Senn sound now we have the HE-5XX giving you big boy performance at a friendly price. I'm rather smitten by this headphone, I think I feel into that trap of expensive is always better to a degree but the HE-5XX despite some questionable build, puts that to bed. From here I'm going to be enjoying my HE-5XX and HD560S for a while, before it was the HD800 and LCD-2 but now I've downgrade but also upgraded in a sense because I'm having a good time.

Just thought I would add my appreciation of these cans to this thread. I originally bought the Jot and the HD-6XXs so I would have something to listen to in the hottest days of summer when the two Vidars are too much for my A/C, but here we are in the middle of winter, and since I got the HE-5XXs I have been listening to them more and more just for their own sake. Maybe because I am new to headphones I just have not come to appreciate the Senns as much as the more experienced folks here, or maybe the planar HPs are closer to the type of sound I get from my Magnepans, but bottom line is I really like these things. Makes me want to try out some higher end planars (and amps). As it is, the Jot's built-in DAC is the obvious limiting factor so I'm thinking a BF2 is in my near future. As if I really needed two separate audio hobbies to feed LOL.

Just scored a Bakoon HPA-21 for a great price and had these laying around: OMG! The current mode output is no joke with planars, even cheap ones like these! Now I regret selling my Arya few weeks back. This could have been pretty amazing

Funny you mention that that I was thinking about that the other day about the HD650. Amazing pair of headphones, the qualities I can hear and agree with but there's always been something missing for me. I've always doubted myself because I've praised the HD650 so much to people but for my own personal use there was always something missing I've buried. Kinder like a relationship that has no spark, she has all the good qualities but there's something missing. I've never been able to pin point what it is the HD650 have always lacked, bought and sold it many times and I think for me it comes down to they don't have that excitement. Planars I've always liked, regardless of what ones they are they just have that pep in their step for me.

The HE-5XX for example compared to my HD650 just sound more musical and fun to me, engaging. I don't disagree with the folks here though about the HD650 but for me it comes back to the whole no spark thing haha. I'm 33 but have a youthful, playful personality so maybe the HE-5XX just match my personality where as maybe in years time, maybe the HD650 will be like my aged whisky, smooth, more notes to taste and appreciate and the HE-5XX will be my Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey, fun, easy choice when I go to my drink cabinet but maybe a bit too lacking in diverse flavours and to upbeat for when I want to listen into the mix more.

One thing I can say for this very moment, the HE-5XX have not disappointed since my write up, they just so so good and can't see myself ever getting rid of them until they break.

I kind of relate to what you mean, I heard the 650 and 600 years ago and liked the 600 better overall just because it was more alive rather than laid back. Haven't heard a fully modded 650 but general impressions is that it's a super 600, which appeals to me. Have you modded your pair of 650s?

HD650 kept stock, may mod them in future at some point, I'm quite lazy when it comes to headphones I just find what works then stick with it. I do like the HD650 stock I'm just not in love with it.
