Thanks so much for the recommendation! So much fun!

Not to derail too much, but I dropped Tidal for Qobuz merely on principle over the MQA horse shit. Qobuz's catalog is expanding, and for many genres seems to reflect their European roots - read into that as much as you'd like.

Listening to this Nation of Language album makes me want to hire them to write a soundtrack to a movie set in the eighties. Would be perfect. They would sound like pop rock songs from the eighties but they’d be all original songs.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Shahenshah

The best album I’ve heard by this amazing Pakistani Musician. Although I must say, I travelled all over Northern India for 8 months and I heard music just like this everywhere. I once posted this album on head-fi and said it was Indian music and people got upset. Well you know what? India and Pakistan are only two separate countries because some stupid f'ing English politician (yes, one person) decided to split them into two countries after WWII. I’m going to go with Ghandi’s repeated pleas to keep India whole. To me this is Indian music. The roots of this music date way back before Pakistan existed. But whatever. I’m just saying that if you want to know a general idea of what kind of music this, what it sounds like, you can lump it in with Indian classical music as far as I’m concerned. There are experts on the subject on this forum though who may freak out.

It’s some of the most profound music I’ve heard. It’s on my list of albums I would send to Aliens to represent the Human race. It literally feels like he is trying to enlighten the listener through music. Which may or may not be possible. Insane vocals with crazy range and tone. Top notch instrumentation. Good sound quality.

Qawwali is not my cup of tea. However, I've seen this guy, once or twice, in London, long time ago and he's certainly a phenomenon.

As to musical and political boundaries, they certainly don't coincide, and I (no expert) think that Northern Indian music got a lot of influence, and even instruments, from places even further north.

Oh, and there was a fellow called Jinnah, as well as the Brits and their typical divide and leave colonial cocking up. But hey, I'm no historian :)

free psychedelic rock jams from the recording sessions of their previous album released in the same year. It’s daring and mad and crazy and loud but technical too. Some of you probably already know this album I think this band is fairly well known. But for those who don’t and like psychedelic rock or want a challenge or something different check it out.

Doveman - With My Left Hand I Raise The Dead

Super minimalist album that defies genre but could be placed into folk rock if I had to put it in a box. But it’s not rock music or folk music my any means. Lots of quiet passages and empty space between notes. Original and very good song crafting. Interesting, original music in general. I’ve never heard anything like it. Sets a slow pace and mood that is entirely it’s own. Mood is somber but it’s not heavy. Good rainy morning music.

I found it on The National’s record label (I think) and bought it based on the cover alone.

    Election Day de-stress album.

Prince Nico Mbarga - Aki Special

The best happy music I’ve ever heard. Usually happy music is soulless crap. This is full of soul and manages to be incredibly genuine while maintaining a very uplifting dance-able happy tone. There’s just no way to listen to this and not feel stress and sadness lift and a smile grow deep in your soul. Really, it’s that good. One of my favorite albums of all time.

This falls under the “Highlife African music” genre. From Wikipedia, the song “Sweet Mother” on this album “has been described as the best-selling song in history by an African recording artist.“

Here’s a link to the song “Sweet Mother” if you just want a taste, but it’s not my favorite song on the album, every song is equally awesome I couldn’t pick a favorite.

beautiful clean Highlife guitar riffs throughout, beautiful melodies. Good sound quality for the release date.

Stars of the Lid - And their Refinement of the Decline

This technically falls under the genre of ambient music but is a great example of why genre boxes suck. It accomplishes/communicates something other ambient music does not.

Using basically just tones that rise and fall in volume they achieve something quite monumental and profound. It’s at times uplifting as if a season of sadness/suffering is ending and it is at times as heavy as a metal album. Actually the emotion it conjures reminds me of Mono’s Hymn to the Immortal Wind (if you don’t have this album you should buy it now regardless of your musical preferences it defies all genres).

The tones that rise and fall seem to have a natural rhythm like breaths or ocean waves. They are complex, not being created by just one instrument or sound but many. Higher and lower notes often rise and fall in the mix of the major combined note, like small waves mixed in with the bigger ones.

I’m just blown away by what this music achieves with so little.

    Lhasa de Sela - Lhasa

Possibly a pretty well known artist as she won a couple international music awards. But whatever, she’s incredibly talented and I’m sure many people don’t know of her.

Her music is vocal heavy blues. A great album for female vocal lovers. She has a beautiful baritone-ish voice with a unique accent and she sings so soulfully and beautifully. Music is minimalist blues based and mostly supports her voice and excellent song writing. Great sound quality.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after this album was released and though she fought it hard she died from it at a young age. She clearly had much more music to give the world.

I really enjoyed this. I couldn't help but think of Sade when I was listening to her sing. Similar tone, register, range to her singing. What a tragedy that she died so young.

Edit: the live album linked in the post below is also great! Don't miss her rendition of A Change is Gonna Come. It takes a lot of balls to attempt this Sam Cooke song and Lhasa pulls it off. She alternates verses with someone else in the band. I think he's beyond his pay grade, but he's trying his best.
