    Hey Guys,

Just got my new speakers home. A used pair bought locally of Wilson Audio Sophia 2’s. I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of floor standing speakers to compliment my BMR Philharmonitors for a while. I saw these a couple months ago, but they were more than I wanted to spend, so I just ignored them. They have come down in price over the last couple months, so I went to check them out. I enjoyed them more than I thought I would.

I know Wilson get a bad rap due to measurements and stuff, but I'm enjoying them so far :) Which is all that matters to me.

I’ve got to get them positioned right and whatnot still. I’m just using my HT marantz right now while I am positioning them as I just got them home. Tomorrow I’ll hook up my Kinki EX-M1 and Rockna Wavelight and give them a good test.

So, listening with the Apple TV (probably not ideal, but it works) going via optical to the Rockna, then to the Kinki. Sounding good, definitely better than the marantz. Still trying different positioning but this is the best I've got it so far. Shows how big they are compared to the BMRs, which aren't small themselves!

Pretty much a 2 channel guy. I have an Allo Katana streaming my Roon content to the Schiit Freya+, to a Parasound HCA-2205A (an actual JC design), and finally into some ancient Legacy Audio Classics.

Overall I love my system. Could it be more detailed, more bass, etc? Probably, but everything sounds very slightly warm and non-fatiguing.

    Hey guys,

been busy lately so I haven't had as much time as I'd like to work on my speaker set up. However, after lots of experimentation, this seems to sound best. Sitting pretty close up, with the speakers at a middling distance from each other, vs being further apart.

I've broken out my old Tannoy sub (TS12? I think) and have been experimenting with it a bit with the Wilsons. Im just running it from one of the RCA outputs of the Rockna Wavelight, which I'm guessing isn't ideal. I'm going to do more looking into integrating it better into the set up. However, currently, I'm enjoying it. It brings a fullness to the low end that makes listening much more pleasing. It will take more experimentation getting its settings worked out perfectly, but so far its been enjoyable.

Will try to have my review of the wavelight up tomorrow or the day after.

Here is a picture with the new Craigslist 70" tv setup.
My speaker setup isn't really for critical listening. This is setup for chilling. Sit back on the gold couch, maybe smoke a joint.
This is the ultimate college apartment. Which is good because we can't do much outside of our apartment with Covid...

So far the most expensive yet the worst sounding set up I have.

Not sure what i'm doing wrong, or maybe its the room....but it sounds like absolute shit.

    Work in progress lol

Is it really as narrow as it looks? That doesn't look like a system I'd install in a passageway ;). No offense: my listening space is actually more like a cupboard!

Anyway, let's see the whole room from the back. and also what the opposite wall looks like.

You are probably overpowering the room. Tame first reflection points, try pulling the speakers out from the corners, plugging the ports, and moving the subs into the corners rather than further out into the room. After that, experimenting with REW or MiniDSP, and possibly calling up Danny Richie to talk about upgraded/different crossovers for those AV123 speakers.

It is! It's a tiny living room since it's a basement apartment.

    Apologies for the horrible photos.

This is the old set up. Kinda shows u how small the room is. MLP is around 6-7 feet away.

This is how it looks against the wall(old pic from when I moved in)

I've played with numerous configs and ran audyssey at least 20 times. I could never get the towers to sound clean or get the subs to blend in.

My bedroom set up which consists of Philharmonic AA monitors and an old integra dtr 6.5 sounds leagues better.

But then again, I am very new to this and don't really know if what I am listening to is how it's "suppose" to sound. Don't know any audiophiles in NYC either to compare and demo.

How far out should I pull the speakers?

These actually have the upgraded Ninja crossovers in them

I would pull them out to the edge of that little wall on the left and see how it sounds.

It would be helpful to see a floorplan. I can't imagine any orientation that would make such large speakers sound good in such a small space.
Can't tell without the floorplan, but could you put the TV & speakers on the wall to the right where the baseboard heater is? Go with a nearfield setup, smaller speakers designed to be against the back wall, sofa faces that wall as far back as you can go and still be able to walk through the room. You can get very high quality nearfield speakers, still use your sub, maybe some room treatment to reduce reflections from whatever would be behind the sofa. Maybe the speakers on stands in the 1st photo would work.

I could never get good sound in this room and this is setup #3. Before that was Klipsch RB-81's and Philharmonic AA monitors.

The wall to the right has a window(u can see in the 2nd photo posted above) and parallel to that is the bathroom.

It also can't go where the couch is as there is a large opening there.

Gonna take some more photos in the am.

First: Point those speakers toward your listening position, so you would get more of the direct sound and less of those sidewall reflections. Your sidewalls will need treatment as it is very close to the speaker and will smear the sound.
Get a carpet on the floor.
Subs in the corners behind speakers.
Run your Audessey to get the delays and levels in the ballpark.
Try one sub in front of the room and another in the back too even out the bass frequency response.

My latest DIY speaker addition: a 3" Peerless PLS-75F25AL03-08 full range element in a small sealed box. Good sounding, although of course lacking in the frequency extremes. Works well for TVs. It's so cute!

I'm no expert on speaker positioning, especially in difficult rooms, but I don't think that bigger speaker is the answer to small room problems.

Having said that, I've heard an ex-cinema-driver big-box system sound great in a small room, but, at least it was symmetrical and without obstructions in front of the speaker(s). And I think those low-power/high-efficiency combinations have a different kind of magic.
Me too. Or put one speaker side up against it and flush with the front, althought there is probably some baffleing reason why not. Anyway, that room is going to beat acoustic theory.

That’s a very tough room. I agree with @Poleepkwa’s suggestions. One of the reasons your nearfield setup sounds so much better is because you are getting mostly direct sound from the speakers. In your other room however most of what you’re hearing is reflected sounds mixed with the direct sound, which will become a mess. You must try to get as much direct sound as possible and minimize reflections. So get the speakers even closer to you, and if you can, yes try to move the speakers past that post if you can (I would try to move slightly ahead of it to reduce baffle reflections). And point them toward you as he suggested. And you really, really need some absorption in there - a thick rug would be a good start.

Take the subs out of the chain for now until you get things working with the mains. Once the mains are good, then try to blend in the subs, if you even need them. Never put subs into an already shitty sounding setup. If you get the mains working well enough, then you have a shot at blending the subs in, but no guarantee (you’re definitely going to have to mess with placement).

Honestly, those speakers could simply be too much for that space, and since you’re likely going to need to be so close to them, the highs/mids/lows may not integrate well because of the height of them (this is another issue with tall speakers in very small rooms).

Ironically, a horn or waveguide based tweeter (like your previous speakers) would probably be best for that room, again because it will limit the horizontal (and vertical) dispersion and reduce the amount of reflections you’ll get and give you more direct sound.

Thanks to all for the recommendations and advice. You were all correct. This is too much speaker for this small room.

I pulled them out a little and the difference was night and day. ESP the low end. I put 3 jackets on the floor to simulate a rug and that made a big difference too.

Decided to pull them out and put them into storage. Going to put the Philharmonics back in the room. Wish I didn't sell the modded pioneer center channel for them.

    Excuse the Temp stands, lol.
