Sadly, all things must come to an end. This is a a mini-death for me. I grew up in California, moved to another state to start a venture, got married, and then moved back. I've been in the greater El Lay area for 13 years now. Now is time for a new adventure. Do I want to leave? Nope. I feel that it's California which has left me. It's always been a high tax state. However, having worked to the point where I have zero liabilities (everything we have is paid for and we owe banks nothing), I still find it hard to save up for the kids much less survive. This rings especially true in the past three or four years. In theory I should be able to pursue doing random stuff of my liking right? Nope, not in California. It's too expensive. Something's happened. I'm not the only one. It seems that the folks we liked the most in similar situations with kids have done the same a year or two before us. Moved to North Carolina, Idaho, Nashville, Austin, Boulder.

I was never really one to chase the "big man" (desire is endless), and I wasn't a cheapskate for most of my life only to have to serve "the man". I want options, freedom, and that is impossible in California. I'll be moving to spot where if my employer ever pisses me off for whatever reason, I can just easily give the finger to "the man". This is real freedom.

Anyway, I thought I would post this. SBAF has never been about gear. It has always been about the people. 90% of the folks in that photo below, taken over five years ago, are still here. It will suck not to have meets, as I really wanted to plan one for this year. Maybe next year we can crash CanJam in Irvine. I'll be there.

    P.S.

I am extremely busy packing stuff and getting the house ready for sale. Figured I should mention this because I am not responding to many messages.

Let us know where you are moving to TX (or whatever you decide on), plenty of directs to most of the Southern states from Jax Airport here in FL (but the Orlando one is sooo much bigger than Jax). I need to get out of my apartment and escape from the GF for a few days. :p

Move to a controversial southeast Asian country where education is significantly cheaper, possibly at the expense of quality and opportunity, and your dollars go a long way (never mind salaries here are often laughable) :D

Kidding aside: Godspeed, and hope it's far more an adventure than anything else. Le petit mort* leaves the door open for loads of new opportunities without the past being a burden.

    *LMAO

I think there's a lot of truth here. Recently stumbled upon this data visualization on reddit that shows which state most people born out-of-state came from originally, and thought it'd be interesting to share here because it kinda shows the pattern you mentioned of people moving out from cali to other states:

Kinda. But doesn't it really just show that California, Texas, New York, and Illinois are approximately the top 4 most populous states? There are more transplants from those states for the same reason that there are more Led Zeppelin fans from those states: Because there are more people in those states. Corrected for population, the map might show very different trends.

What's most interesting to me about the map is what's happening in the lower-right corner. Florida's population is in or very near the top 5, yet there's hardly any diffusion out of that state. Apparently, Floridians can check out any time they like, but they can never leave.

I'm reminded of this in The Onion a few years back (worth scrolling to the last line): "8.4 Million New Yorkers Suddenly Realize New York City A Horrible Place To Live"

FL is the third most populated state after NY now, thanks to the Escape from New York the Movie in real life. I would know, I escaped from NYC via my family.

There is also plenty of reasons why not too many NY'ers are leaving FL (and in general why most don't leave).
    • Good chunk of NY'ers moving to FL are retirees.
      • Nothing new, this has been the stereotypical NY life for decades.
      • Retiring in NY sucks due to state tax your SSI and other benefits. FL doesn't have any of that shit.
      • This has been increasing due to baby boombers.
    • Thanks to the Work From Home movement, why be cold and look at gray skies in NY all the time while you can drive to the beach and be hot and sweaty all the time in FL. NY'ers are buying up homes like their parking ticket collection.
    • With the two points above, if you are loaded with money made in NY and want to have your family well off after you past away, move to FL because NY has a trash Estate tax. FL doesn't have it.
    • Tons of NY communities in FL.
      • NY'ers regardless if Left/Right don't really want to be with Southern Conservatives types, since they don't look at themselves as Rednecks or good ole boys.
With these factors above, almost all NY'ers who move to FL don't leave. The few who leave later reallize that they don't like FL due to how hot it is most of the year.

Also the states that were showing in @pure5152 post where NY make the majority of move ins are also not too surprising. NY'ers prefer moderate social issues states in the South and not true pure Southern State states like MS, AL, LA, etc. As stated in my last bulletpoint, I know plenty of NY'ers (including my family) who don't want to be in a "Redneck" area or state. It is what it is.
