Forgive me if these questions have been asked, but has anyone done measurements with the HM5 pads? What's the benefit? Thanks!

I took some, but never saved the results because it looked pretty bad. I'll try to remember to take them again and save the results this time.

I wonder if solderdude kept the foam beneath the pads while measuring the HM5 pads?

@Koth Ganesh and have you tried it yet with Dynamat? :)

To summarize it for everyone, the coin/foam mods work best, Dynamat doesn't come up in measurements (I'm guessing that has more to do with where it's placed) but is quite audible (try a bass shaker test). And K240's thicker foam somehow does seem to increase speed slightly, also slightly warmer in a good way. Quite enjoyable as a package.

    My mods http://imgur.com/a/wLmKp:
Back foam removal + plastic removal.
Front K240 foam + coin hole (hard to cut use a very sharp knife)
Dynamat after multiple bigger, smaller and everything attempts this was pretty much the perfect sweet spot. Just small targeted placements like @purrin's including @Hands's magnet covering.

It's possible that some improvements might be seen in impulse response, phase, and full spectrum CSD measurements if one has the proper gear and methods to adequately measure those data points. Frequency response and CSDs (latter from mids up) might not show improvements from Dynamat or similar mods. Best to just use your ears anyway.

Seriously, screw with the measurements on this. The reason I never wrote a treatise on the HD650 mods was because the measurement differences were so minor on the order of one db (maybe two), that they could have been account for by small changes in placement on the measurement rig. Sometimes you have to use your ears. For example. there is way more going on when you completely remove the inside foam than what any of the measurements suggest.

A few SBAF guys will get a chance to hear the fully modded HD650 by the end of the month, so it'll be interesting to see what they think.

But, yeah, the HD650 measures so consistently even with mods that you'll go crazy going that method. Though the measurements I took without any front foam were...ugly.

So, just removing the foam in the back of the driver is not really recommended? Gotta do dynamat aswell?

I don't think you necessarily have to do the Dynamat mod, but it does offer improvements.

Just do what purrin suggested, and, no, they aren't hard. See the main measurement thread.
