One more item. Local pickup only.

Marantz CD5004 CDP. FREE. Any small donation to [email protected] for the SBAF war chest would be appreciated.

Mechanism is flakey and sometimes needs some help to spin up, so I keep the lid popped. It could be that I haven't used it much these days and all it needs it some oil. I can't find the screws for the lid. This is a modded unit that is set up to only be used as an SPDIF out transport. The internal DAC and analog outputs suck.

Overall high cost of living. Not much of an issue if you do not have kids or are not retired. Retirees on fixed income could still have a hard time despite Prop 13 limiting property taxes increases to no more than 2% per year. Families with growing kids who are eating more and will soon head off to college will have a hard time. To be clear, there are higher tax states though.
    • Not much in cultural return for high taxes. New York has the Met, a world class art museum, which is free, the the last time I visited. San Francisco has the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, where I get the honor of paying well over $120 for tickets for a family of four.
    • Shit infrastructure for taxes paid. El Lay roads are shit and will tear your rims to pieces. I used to mutter "FU Villaraigosa (former mayor of LA)" whenever I ran over potholes. NYC has a working subway that takes people from where they live to where they work or dine. El Lay has a subway that goes from nowhere to nowhere. SF Bay Area subway only sort of works. You drive an hour to the subway station, and then another hour on the train to where you work. Sillycon Valley proper (south of SF) has no proper public transportation. Highway 5, the main artery from SF to El Lay, is still the same two lane highway from before I can remember.
    • High state income tax rate, effectively 9.3% for an upper middle class family.
    • High auto ownership costs
      • $500-$600 annual car registration fees for typical cars like Jeeps
      • Highest gas prices (because of tax) in the nation except for Hawaii
      • High insurance costs because buttheads need to get pole position in front of you and a stop sign means stop and then instantly go without waiting for others who had already stopped
    • High utilities costs. Cost of gas has crept up to where light winter heating could net you a $200 monthly bill. Expect summer electricity bills in El Lay to be $300-$800 monthly, depending upon age of house and how cool you like it. If you have a lawn, expect $150 water bills every month. Electric costs will only go up as there isn't enough fossil fuel generation to take up the slack when the sun goes down. Electric utilities now need to pay to fix the ancient power lines that caused all sorts of fires because they spent all their money on solar generation.
    • High food costs. Expect a Sunday breakfast to be $22 a plate after coffee and juice are accounted for. This is outside of El Lay in Ventura county which is a little bit less. Food at grocery stores costs not much less, so often it's easier to go out and pay more.
    • High property tax. Sure only 1.1% on average depending upon county, but with insane home values, it comes out to be a lot. The only folks who are OK are those who bought their homes in the 1970s and stayed.
    • High property expenses. More bullshit like Mello Roos taxes, "temporary" local taxes that go on for another 10-30 years on top of property taxes. Also many homes are in an HOA. $300-$500 or more is normal. That's not per year, that's per month.
    • High sales tax. Typically 9.5% after local taxes are accounted for.
    • Tax and regulation happy political machine. Heck, the state almost killed home-state employers Uber and Lyft (not profitable yet, or ever). Any other state in the union would have fought tooth and nail to make these companies as successful as possible if they were based there. This is the result of lunacy and one-party rule. People got what they wished for. Also, dumb stuff like $500 per year for an LLC. Also, a one year wait (or longer) for my local whiskey place to get a license to have the spirits bar.

Thanks for taking time to walk through all of that. To be clear, that question wasn't directly to your move, but I saw a lot of discussion prior about leaving the state, and personally have old colleagues who all left within the past few years. I wondered what the catalyst was, figured it had to be more than taxes (something I see come up a lot around this topic).
There was a brief time where I considered making CA home, but from this POV the situation looks tough even long-timers. Place seems to breed complicated relationships with it residents, based on all I've seen. Best of luck with the transition Marv.

It is no wonder all the El Lay types have been flocking here to Nashville. No state taxes, super low property tax, esp. if you live out in the neighboring county countryside estate, and low on all the rest of it (car registration, insurance, food, etc.). Plus, for the superstars, they don't get hounded for pics and autographs wherever they go. There is a huge reason Nissan moved their US headquarters here from El Lay a few years ago. Now Amazon is coming to build offices here.

I can't deal with the traffic there, but that's just the tip of the iceberg...:( In spite of that my closest family and dearest friends are still there so I really hope and wish things improve!

@purr1n - my wife and I visited LA area four years ago, we loved the weather and the laid back lifestyle compared to the east coast but wasn't too aware of the cost of living.

My best to you and your family!

Oh, and our schools suck, our health outcomes are bad, Dolly Parton has to bail us out when the state can't really afford to or are too focused on non issues (TN is still the Money Trial state). Also, high sales tax (9.25%), and that includes all purchases from Amazon and eBay - they just add it on automatically. Our governor's last job was being in charge of a home services company, like plumbing and air conditioner repair.

Funny thing is I haven't been as bothered by the traffic situation as much lately. One would think that would be cause for celebration but I actually feel a bit ambivalent about that. Wonder why /s

Yeah there's a lot of plainly fetid things here but as with anything else involving people the only thing to do is try and make it better however possible. Wishing your dear friends and family well, hope they kept safe during the recent messes.

Random aside where I abuse my licence to shitpost: found evidence earlier today that someone messed with our gate lock like they were trying to break in. Christmas time seems to be high season for that sorta thing, sigh. Yeah, make it better.

I can fully empathize with everything you said. I was there from '08-'16. I lost a dear friend to Covid in September, otherwise my family and other friends are fine and feeling grateful.

All the best to you and your loved ones!

what about the culture void? I think in large part because of the dot com boom, what once was a unique California culture has been replaced by some kind of money culture. It’s really a culture void here in California. SF was once a kind of cultural hub and epicenter for the whole country and is now just soulless money culture. All that remains is commodified takes on the culture that once was. There’s still some cool stuff like the free bluegrass festival in golden gate park and all the other festivals in the fall but no one who attends them can afford to live in SF. It’s a really odd pretend culture. No one that could contribute anything meaningful to it can afford the cost of rent so when you dig past the veneer it’s empty.

That’s why I want out of California. I want to live somewhere that has a “fisherman’s warf”where you can actually buy local fish. Just one example. You can extrapolate that example to all aspects of society.

and agreed on public transportation. That’s vital for culture because it allows non-rich people to get around and make interesting things happen. Our country in general really doesn’t understand the importance of public transportation.

No time. Under tremendous pressure to clean house, pack stuff, get walls painted, fixing minor stuff, etc. for house sale.
