There's no way Jot 2 will be better than Freya S from a transparency point of view because Jot 2 is Freya S + more stuff after it.

The CFA IEMs sound great, full bodied, super nuanced, better than any portable or small stack. Alas, there is hiss.

The 789 is a bit on the sterile side, but quiet and has the 0.5x gain option.

Obviously interrelated, and choice will depend upon synergy with headphone, but in terms of engagement, that is ability to transfer the essence or soul of the music as to making it difficult for the listener to put down the headphones (technicalities aside), I would put things in this order:
    1. Valhalla 2 (all tube, WCF)
    2. Lyr 3 (Octal tube + Continuity output)
    3. Jot 2 (Nexus + Continuity S (lite) output)
    4. .
    5. Vali 2+ (9-pin tube + class AB)
    6. .
    7. Magni 3+ (CFA class AB)
    8. Magni Heresy (chips)
    9. Magnius (moar chips)
Valhalla 2 tends to work with HD650 very well almost exclusively. Jot 2 works amazingly with orthos and dynamics alike. Lyr 3 is a good all-around that works with dynamics a bit better than orthos. Lyr 3 is robust and laid-back. Jot 2 has heft and is harmonicly rich. Vali 2+ and Valhalla 2 are neutral. Magni 3+ and Heresy are slightly warm. Magnius is tonally weird to me, but a ton of discussion on it here.

Someone asked: yes, the Jot 2 is quite a bit different from OG Jot first production version.

There won't be any hiss from the balanced output.

@schiit I noticed when I shut off Jot 2 I get 3 clicks one after another a pause than a 4th. On startup I just get the one sexy click. I was curious as I never heard more than one click on shutdown on Asgard 3.

There are a bunch of relays in Jotunheim. After the main ones are offline (muted), it'll take a while for some of the others to turn off.

Where do the Asgard 3 and Mjolnir 2 fall, in terms of engagement (all other technicalities aside)?

Up there somewhere above 4. I haven't had them on hand recently or sufficiently listened to them for an extended period of time to precisely locate where they go. Schiit has too much gear in their lineup for me to track it all.

even if fed by an unbalanced source? (Until you make a balanced Loki Pro!)

    thanks for your input!

    Source—balanced or SE—doesn’t matter.

How does the Jotunheim 2 sound compared to the Ragnarok 2 driving headphones?

I only have experience with the latter, so trying to triangulate how much of an effect the Continuity S circuit has on the sound. Liked the Nexus meat, but didn't like the treble presentation / nuance of the Ragnarok 2 as much as the Ragnarok 1.5. (my Rag 2 loaner impressions)

No idea, not enough experience with both in front of me to discern specifics.

If anyone has tried HD650/600 on both SE and balanced - could you share if there is a difference between the two outputs?

So to be clear, Freya S still remains the best preamp to pair with Aegir? What would be #2 contender? (As for me, still running Aegir with Sys pod).

Will it work with this? Will it work with that? Just buy it. It's not that expensive and works quite well with HD800s, Verite open, Grado RS2e, no time yet for Verum, Elegia or HD650 but I cannot imagine it not working well with these headphones. Listening with Verite now. I will say it sounds better after 8 days powered vs initial listening, could just be my ears but I don't think so.
He6se and Jot2 vs speaker amp? I think the Jot2 wins in resolution, mids, and treble, bass being a push. I'm not going to nitpick, Jot2 wins. Vanessa Fernandez covering zeppelin is a revelation.

Bifrost 2 / Jotunheim 2 sounds really smooth with Utopia. Can crank up the volume to unhealthy levels and it won’t screech or scream at you. The tonality is pretty spot on for me.
Only thing is the stage is pretty flat (Schiit style) and it doesn’t image particularly well. It’s set up in my bedroom which has pretty bad power and the pair is running off of a Furman AC-215A. Need to re-evaluate in the office which has much better power.

    Exit stage left....
if a Bifrost + Jot2 improve with a magick power source beyond the Furman AC-215A, it's an indictment on the Furman if anything.

Nah, the outlet by my bed is really not great. Not sure if it’s the end of the run or just half-assed put together or something.

Things sound better in the office, even with the same conditioner (Furman 15i).

I've listened to Jot 2 a couple times at the schittr with my 6xx via SE input, and it sounds really engaging and satisfying. It sounds very resolving, with great grip on the bass, and tons of head room, even single ended. With the Nexus topology, the single ended really shouldn't sound much different than the balanced if it's anything like the original Jot in that regard. This is good solid state; I don't hear any of the "edge enhanced" THX exaggerated sharpness that I find to sound a little too perfect.
