I wasn't able to find a thread dedicated to firearms, hopefully it's okay I started a thread in the Outdoor World section. If not feel free to shitcan it!

I'm hoping some of you might enjoy chiming in and sharing your experiences with guns and talk about the various handguns, rifles, etc., which brands/models you like and why, the situations in which you have used them be it military, law enforcement, target shooting, competition, and or hunting. Right now I am fairly fixated on AR-15's so anything to do with them would be awesome sauce!

ANYWAY... I'm new to firearms in general, at least as far as owning and shooting them for fun on a regular basis. Target shooting can be a hell of a lotta fun but I won't lie as I had another motivation which is to know my way around a handgun and rifle in order to feel safe using them and to be ready in the very unlikely and unwanted situation where defending myself and family becomes necessary.

My first acquisition was a Springfield XD-M Elite 9mm and I really like it but in my new quest to build a home armory to prepare for the zombie or alien invasion, have turned my efforts to learning about the AR-15 platform and my oh my these rifles are like a lego set! You can buy parts from various manufacturers and build your own or do what I plan to start which is go on a fact finding mission about the different companies who make these and buy a AR-15 complete rifle and deck it out with all the fun accessories. I'm leaning towards the higher end manufacturers as I want something that is reliable and will likely last longer than I will on this earth which brought me to either Bravo Company MFG (BCM) or Daniel Defense. Once I found both of them, narrowed it down to BCM Recce-16 Precision or Daniel Defense DDM4 V7.

I will leave it there for now and see if this has any interest or if the community would rather not discuss such things on an audio forum. haha!

About a year or so ago I casually mused about why there was no firearms thread or golf thread given that both are popular enough activities (regardless of whether or not you personally shoot or play golf). SBAF pretty much caught on fire for a week.

Well if that's the case, as I stated above feel free to remove this. But I'm hoping to have conversations about safety, gear, target shooting, etc. The second people start up with the "pry my weapons from my cold dead hands" political bullshit I'll regret ever trying to start this thread.

I can seek out actual firearms forums, but even though I have not talked directly to many of the members I feel like I know a lot of you as friends from being here, reading your profile updates, forum posts, impressions, etc. and would like to talk about firearms with this forums members and try to avoid militant gun nuts. There are many intelligent people from all walks of life here and I feel that is a huge benefit no matter the topic.

Well, a million different directions are possible. I sort of put the shooting sports on the back burner a few years back as my life/interests moved in other directions. Just before I did I went down the 'terminal ballistics' rabbit hole and ended up getting an AR chambered in 6.8 SPC, which I still have and is my goto zombie gun.

I seem to recall that Illinois is a highly regulated state - I don't think you guys can even rifle hunt there right?

With firearm ownership goes great responsibility. Safety and training should be at the top of the list, above hardware discussion. A class B safe is also a necessary investment, to keep the hardware from being stolen or misused by inquiring minds. As always, mental "software" is extremely important to increase probability of successful deployment in worst case scenarios if the occasion should unfortunately arise. May I suggest Lethal Force Institute or Firearms Academy of Seattle.

Those were my trainers when I had a very unfortunate situation with a stalker threatening my family. Serious enough that Law Enforcement, Courts and several Government Agencies were involved. A kindly officer suggested the aforementioned training given the seriousness of the situation and small children at risk. The training is eye opening in role playing strategy for how it works when the shit really hits the fan. Not to mention some "interesting" drills such as El Presidente, IN TOTAL DARKNESS, the liquor store robbery setup and the home burglary. Always send in the dogs first. Always.

Decades later the stalker died of a heart attack. But we still live with the aftereffects, and several in the family have PTSD from multiple frightening encounters. Such as that feeling when you are staring down the wrong end of a 9mm pointed at your head. It's a long story best told over beverages.

Atomicbob's point about safety is well taken. For most us who don't engage in risky behavior/lifestyle, or otherwise found in extraordinary situations like atomicbob's family, our firearms are much more likely to be a danger to ourselves and our loved ones than any boogeyman. All my firearms are broken down and in a safe and thus worthless in a 'bump in the night' situation, and I don't have any reason statistically speaking to carry outside the home. Safety training is soooo important - I have walked away from gun ranges and people when they were displaying poor judgement/behavior around safety. When I was 13, my father discharged his 'empty' 30-06 only a few feet from my head when he was cleaning it...nothing more dangerous than an unloaded gun.

Learn the 4 rules of gun safety and live by them when handling your firearms. Learn to the point your thinking about it anytime you see someone else handle a gun whether in real life or on TV. Make everyone in your household memorize them.

    1) The gun is ALWAYS loaded.
    2) Keep your booger finger off the trigger at all times until your ready to fire.
    3) Don't point the gun at anything your not willing to destroy.
    4) Know what's between you and your target and beyond.

    9mm

I know oodles of people like & carry them, but personally I don't like the characteristics of the 9mm round. Yes, they're compact and lethal enough, but the round can also be lethal to 2 miles, and lethal through residential construction walls, so IMO dangerous for home protection.

    Carrying

Definitely take a class/classes! If there's an LTC class near you, I'd take that even if you don't plan to get Licensed To Carry. At least in Texas when I first got mine, they showed some videos that covered some broad situations that make you think about what you'd do in that situation if you are carrying. In many cases it can be better to duck, cover, and evade rather than engage. Each person has to decide for themselves (hopefully in advance) what situations warrant pulling out the weapon for personal safety.

If you carry, you'll want insurance. Average cost to defend an after-incident lawsuit is $70k. I like USCCA and there are others.

    AR15

I'm with you, there are a lot of options. I don't currently own one, but am going to purchase an AR-pattern gun (looking at the Banshees currently). It seems like there's a lot to learn about how AR's work, and what needs doing to maintain them. I'm sure it's not all that complicated, but I just need to do the research.

A prior firearm thread was moved to a hidden section of the site. This was around the time where 4chan, tea-party, alt-right, I dunno, whatever weirdos were joining the site. Evidently, a few folks had latched on when they discovered my anti-statist views, but were sorely disappointed when I thought many elements of 4chan / alt-right thought were utterly ghey and only served to ensure lifelong unintentional celibacy. The gun thread looked more like an early vacuum tube thread where people just posted photos of tubes without any substantial discussion. Of course there was no discussion of gun safety, responsibility, or training. I didn't want SBAF to be audio and guns. I mean, audio by itself is already weird enough as a guy thing. Also, when Asian guys talk about guns, it makes me cringe. I don't know why. Wife hates them and says not in the house. So it could be that too.

I’m not a gun collector, but I have enough to need another safe. I tend to buy something in a certain category and then call it good.

Besides having several shotguns, I have the following:

Ruger 10-22: Everyone should have one of these. Indispensable classic for hunting small game.

S&W Shield 2.0 9mm: this is my everyday carry. Good for close shots, small and lightweight. I bought this because it’s very concealable. Not as accurate when you get beyond 15-20 yds, but still good enough to hit the 9 range on body targets.

S&W Model 19 revolver: I’ve had this for 30 years and it was a retired police model that most would carry in the 1970’s. Shoots 38sp or 357. Despite a short barrel, I’m more accurate with this shooting double action than I am with the Shield 2.0. I can plink hanging metal body plates pretty reliably out to about 30 yards. But it’s heavier and a little bulky.

Ruger Mini 14: Shoots .223 and mine has a folding stock and a nice scope. Maybe not as accurate as a tricked out AR-15, but I’ve still hit prairie dogs at almost 1/4 mile with a laser sight on it. But at that range I’d rather have a sniper rifle for better consistency.

the only other rifle I’d like is a single shot sniper rifle that shoots 308 or Creedmor. I’ve seen some in action and 625-675 yard ‘dog kills are pretty impressive. But I don’t hunt like that often enough to probably make that pay off.

Gun safety is definitely paramount to being a responsible gun owner. I don't own a whole lot of guns at the moment. I'd love to get a few more, but they're damn expensive.

    In regards to the AR-15:

I've got a lot of trigger time with the AR-15 platform and I can appreciate why people love them (modularity, limitless options in aftermarket parts, good accuracy even with cheaper examples, controllable recoil, etc.). That said, I'm not the biggest fan of the platform. One of my biggest gripes is the charging handle. It is positioned awkwardly and coupled with the awkwardly placed bolt lock/release button makes clearing drills annoying. Plus you can't do a closed bolt reload without breaking your cheek weld. The original AR-15 charging handle that was under the carrying handle was awkward in its own way, but I liked it better.

Take down for cleaning is really simple and doesn't require any special tools which is nice. That is where cleaning ceases to be easy, though. Getting these rifles clean is a pain. The star chamber and upper receiver get coated in carbon deposits and there are tons of little nooks and crannies to get into to scrub it out. Never had to clean one of the full length piston style uppers so not sure if that would fully remedy that specific issue. I'll admit I'm biased in this regard since the Army made me meticulously clean these things during BCT.

My favorite platform that I've shot so far has been the AK platform. They aren't nearly as modular or ambidextrous as AR-15 style rifles, but I appreciate their ruggedness and how much easier they are to clean. I also think they look much better, but that's just me.

I also have a love of old WWII rifles and currently own a Mosin-Nagant / M1891. They're cheap and fun, but come coated in cosmolene and require loads of elbow grease to get looking good again. My dream rifle would be to own a M1 Garand, though. I still occasionally kick myself for not snagging one through the CMP when they were cheaper and more plentiful. Finding good examples anymore requires deep pockets.

Same for me about 50% of the time. It's typically been some combination of 1) too enthusiastic for no or the wrong reasons (i.e. legit scary) 2) don't know what's actually going on 3) delusional ideas about what guns will be for, etc (usually tied to #2). 4) Treating or actually playing shiny new toys and/or pissing contest with firearms. Perhaps not that different from an "BUT MY SINAD IS BETTER" or the like in audio circles

Note that this is not limited to Asian people in my experience though - I've experienced this around [pick favorite skin color, ethnic group, or age group here] as well - random people may bring it up as a topic, both on the pro and anti side, and I've had to promptly see myself out of the conversation more than once or twice b/c they got way too cringe way too fast.

The other 40/50% of the time (with different persons obviously) it's not different than listening to someone who knows what they're doing talk about what they're doing. i.e. no different than a physics professor lecturing about physics or a coach training their athletes, etc.

Also completely get keeping SBAF about the Audio and not Audio + whatever. And bluntly put I'm a little amazed this thread has made it this far w/o another crap storm appearing, etc.

Interesting convo. As a rather rare Canadian who owns and practices with handguns regularly, I have noticed that a not insignificant number of members at my range are of Filipino descent specifically. Much more so than demographics would suggest. Not reading anything into that of course, maybe it is cultural, maybe it is random coincidence, I'm not caring about people's nationality in any case. I will say they all seem knowledgeable and well disciplined, probably more than average actually.

More on topic, I also like to bust some clays informally, mostly at a buddy's farm, and occasionally do some upland bird hunting. Many years ago I had a nice Browning Citori O/U. It is one of only a handful of things I have regretted parting with over the years (some audio equipment is in that category too), and I've been wanting to get another one for a while. After looking at new Citori Crossovers, and a Beretta 686, I handled one of the FN built Winchester 101s at Cabelas and just ordered one online. It is every bit as well built as the others IMO and about $800 cheaper. Will post a review when it arrives (for curbside pickup of course).

I have a model 19 that I bought about 15 years ago from a retired cop who bought it as a backup and then forgot it in a drawer. I rarely go to the range any more, but when I do, I always shoot better with the 19 than with my more modern pistol. I frequently think about selling everything but the model 19, 12 gauge, and 30-30.

Yes.... the Model 19 kicks ass. Glad to hear I’m not the only one that has an appreciation for it. I thought my consistent accuracy with it might have been due to the length of time I’ve owned it and the number of rounds fired. But I think it’s just a damn fine weapon. Everyone should own a good wheel gun.

I also inherited the longer barrel version of the 19. I think it may be called the 66. For some reason I’m not nearly as accurate with it, but I haven’t shot nearly as many rounds through it.

Model 19 is legendary. Revolvers were popular when I was growing up (in the days of Elmer Keith and Bill Jordan). I've owned a few, including a model 29, but just have one now, a model 66 which is the stainless version of model 19 (OG 66, pinned and recessed for those who care about such things). It shoots great, but is mostly a safe queen. I shot a 1911 for many years but mostly practice with a Glock 22 in .40 S&W now.

Any Glock owners here? I am interested in the smaller glocks that are chambered 45ACP. I am looking for a somewhat compact pistol that can shoot 45 ACP hollow points without jamming. My custom Colt 1911 is unable to do this and neither is my Detonics. What about Glocks?

I had a Springfield XDS .45 for awhile (4" bbl). I loved the thing, it was super accurate, never a problem. But oh my wrist! It got so that I flinched any time I went to shoot it (pre-ouch flinching), so I had to sell it.

The XDM's are excellent, a little more bulky, but don't suffer the same.

    I've never owned a Glock.

The compact Glocks are prohibited here in Canada, with some exceptions. All the Glocks I have owned have been incredibly reliable no matter what they are fed. I think that is a big part of why people love them, it is certainly not for their fine craftsmanship...

The 45/10mm Glocks are really big in the hand. They may be chopped down but they’re still big in the hand. It’s the Glock insistance on plastic magazines which bulks them up. I really don’t see much compact about them.

My Detonics is reliable other than not always locking open on magazine empty but mine is an original model I’ve owned since the late 1970’s. Honestly, my favorite 45 is a Compact Wilson Combat (shorter than a Commander, longer than an Officers). That eats just about any loads I put through it. And it’s an 8+1.
