Grado Screw Mod

I love the Joe Grado HP-1000. But I can’t stand John Grados, at lest not the classic ones I’ve heard a decade ago. After years of frustration with John and his treble peaky shit show I’ve finally found a mod that at lest makes them useful even if they remain un-listenable.

WARNING: THIS MOD IS NON REVERSIBLE AND WILL PERMANENTLY REPURPOSE YOUR GRADOS

Steps

1. Remove the foam earpads and put them aside.
2. Remove the headband assembly. Do this by pulling on the forks that hold the cups until they widen enough to get the pegs out of the holes in the cups and remove them. It’s ok if they break you won’t be needing the headband.
3. Use a hair dryer or possibly hold the now headband-less cups up to a heater to melt the hot glue used to secure the cups to the driver and baffle. Once hot enough the glue will melt and you can twist off the cups. This leaves you with naked drivers in baffles with cables attached.
4. Remove the cables. Just yank on them it doesn’t matter you won’t need the cable.
5. You should now have two drivers attached to baffles. They should look like this.
6. Flip them around so the drivers are facing down so they look like this.
7. Now you are done.
8. Whenever you remove screws from other good headphones to modify them or remove screws from anything, you have a magnetic cup that is great for holding screws and not letting them roll all over and get lost. Here’s what it looks like in use.
9. Alternatively you can use a 3 cent (they are sold in bulk) plastic cup like this to hold screws. Either one works but the Grado driver is smaller

Yup, I am avoiding that place nowadays. I very much dislike the attitude over there and their all amps/DACs sound the same theory. Dunno, feels like they are all 20 over there, reminds me of how I was at that age.

This is hilarious. I already have a harbor freight magnetic cup for screws but if someone started selling one that looked like a Grado cup and driver I'd be all over it.

 

Please don’t. I say this out of concern for your safety. The combination of Joe Grado and Don (@dBel84 ) creates a holy duality with the Gods of old. Any destruction of such an instrument of purity could result in you being struck down by lightning.

 

i have successfully been using these very effective screwedgrados for several years. Actually since RD originally introduced me to this fabulous mod when he sent me one as a gift
