I wont be surprised if this is just another H650 situation where Drop takes a phased out product and puts their color scheme on it. If it is more than that... it's still a HD800 and ready to be truly updated.

On one hand it would be good to see if they do tune it as MD/Drop tunings tend to be better than the counterpart of the product they did a collab on, on the other hand a cheap HD800 to tinker with could also be very appealing..

Btw today Sennheiser said they are selling their consumer business. Would be sad to see them go the AKG way but in all honesty they haven't brough anything new and exciting in years, so no wonder

I don't understand. Just their name is a huge marketing asset, isn't it?

Or is it only an asset when selling to old farts like me, rather than the young buyers who prefer to think of rap artists rather than a distinguished history in audio?
A cheap HD800 to keep in stock in case mine gets eaten by one of the cats would be very appealing. But the only time I bought anything from them it took forever to get here. I think they have a special arrangement with an international courier that still ships under sail.

I guess if Drop can basically cover the HD6XX, HD58X, HD8XX - they are basically "owning" the Sennheiser consumer audiophile sector which is much harder than probably the TWS or whatever cheap-fi trend is. So - Drop is basically doing a trial run for probably a lot cheaper than outright buying it. HAHAHAHA

The smart move would be a HD800 with some kind of sdr/anax mod applied to it.

Maybe a poll should be started whether anyone is excited about a HD800 in 2021? We've (SBAF) have been saying that the weakest link of the HD800 is the chassis and literally the only thing we have to go on is the chassis image.. Why would any of us be excited about that? We want the HD800 driver in a HD6XX chassis you idiots. We want a HD700 that was promised. We want the successor to the HD800... not the HD800 that EVERYONE OF US HAS OWNED LIKE 5 TIMES AND SOLD AND MODDED AND SOLD AND MODDED AND SOLD.

"New Headphone"...... "NEW HEADPHONE"......... Yeah, OK "Drop"

The -only- good thing I can see happen here is the HD800 with drop modified tuning. But even then it'll likely be just "HD800S" sound for cheaper... which is nothing new or particularly exciting. But who knows maybe Drop'll surprise us...

I've never had or heard the 800, if price is right I might bite.

The HD800 chassis is superior to the HD600 style chassis. It just needs to be modified. If Drop is able to integrate the Anax/Absorber mod into their HD8xx it will be a big win.

Confirmed HD8XX. Will posted a blurb about it in the comments on the Drop page.

Looks like it's based on the 800S with better bass extension (+5db at 10hz compared to 800S) and a smoother midrange. $1100 for the first 3000 orders. Ships November. $1200+ for future runs in 2022. Preorders live at 9am PST tomorrow.

I'm not a fan of crowdfunding a headphone nobody has heard. A $1k+ headphone at that. Who knows what this thing sounds like.

:drunk: When the HD6xx launched the HD650 was still like $300 bucks used and closer to $400 new. Given the price of these and the timing, seems a couple years too later and a couple bucks too much. But who knows maybe Massdrop and Sennheiser got the golden ticket on these that no modders have. Also 9 month wait for Drop seems like a new record.

To save someone some digging here are Will's comments.

What are the chances that Drop will clear 3000 orders? With a crowd of buyers looking for sub-$300 DAC/Amp combo's, I can't picture the HD8XX being sold out - though I'll likely be proven wrong.

I do have to admit that as a HD800S owner for almost a year, my stomach went into knots reading that the HD8XX will have better bass. That's right. I'm petty and extremely jealous that Drop will have the tuning setup the way I wish my 800S were. (but I'm not willing to spend $1100 to find out).

(Edit: @Erroneous brought up excellent points. Thank you for making sense)
