I personally prefer an asymmetrical look, like what you posted earlier. Trying to line things up too matchy, matchy bothers me but at the end of the day I can live with either as long as it’s clean.

With the change to using the compute module, would this potentially allow the pi2aes to do >192khz content via I2S? Or is this still a limitation on the CM4 as well?

Just when I think I got it figured out...

The case from Modu in Italy that I planned to use came in. And it is not good. For a single one off DIY it's fine, but for a production product there is too much assembly time. So I went back to the original plan of using extrusions and cutting our own plates. We have an in house CNC for protos so that's straight forward. The down side is that box got longer (I can get them shorter, but I already buy this size for another project). Yes, I know, I was making a big deal of not making it bigger! Sometimes I think while my big mouth gets my in trouble, at least my foot fits just fine!

On the plus side it now allows for a full size NVMe SSD. And it will be much easier for folks to take off the top plate and access the socket. For us it is also much easier to assemble in prduction.

Front and back are the same but the panels are a bit bigger and more rounder to match the extrusion:

Inside is bigger and has the full size SSD:

Sweet! I like it very much. Are you planning to do silver as well Michael? Both my rigs are “Schiit silver” almost exclusively. I suspect a lot of folks on here at least have a similar situation (although maybe not quite as much as me :))

Nope, it doesn't. :( Because the CPU chip they use from broadcom was targeted towards set top boxes and other TV type players there's no real incentive to go above 192 khz. And my personal opinion is it's just a waste of bits. But, that's just my opinion!

because we will be cutting the plates ourselves and then anodizing them we will be offering both silver and black. question, do you want the entire box to be silver or just the front panel and keep the rest of the box black? That does keep my costs and complexity down.

consider doing the box gray and then have different colored front panels.

Gray would only work if we powder coated or painted it. But my intention is to anodize everything black. But as I said earlier, anodizing the front panel silver is doable, but it makes putting the lettering on more challenging. On black anodized I use the laser to create slightly off white lettering. With anodized silver I have to use a material called cermark which you spray on, do the laser, then wash off. More steps, more mess, but it's still not unrealistic.

you guys will let me know if all this detailed information is just too much inside baseball, right?

TBH, I would try to keep it simple and just offer one color to start.

Or just charge more for the silver if it’s legit more expensive/time consuming (assuming the price difference is reasonable).

Based on the images it looks like this will utilize a 5V power supply vs the 24V requirement of the Pi2AES, is this correct?

Yes, which will of course only encourage more power supply nervousa!

If anything though it is just nice to be able to use existing PSU's with it :p
I've got god knows how many 5v psu's laying about of all types. But nothing 24v.

Originally used a 19v one but swapped to a slightly janky 5v setup atm. Will be nice to be able to plug straight in.

Sorry, longer. You mentioned the case being longer in the other quote. What are those dimensions?
