Has anybody heard the HFM remake of the Sony MDR R10? i understand HFM has a planar and a dynamic version. Any insights on the dynamic version would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Need closed back around $250. Whole bass region to be strong, like 4dB more mid and 7db more sub-bass than HD650.

Emphasized lower-mids, recessed upper-mids and toned down treble.

    Don’t care for isolation.

I'd like find a cable to connect the S/PDIF line-out of my Hiby R6 Pro to the coax input of my Hugo 2. Looks like both ends of this need a 3.5 mm TRRS connection.

Cable which came with my R6Pro for this purpose is 3.5mm on one end and RCA on the other -- nothing to plug it into on my Hugo 2.

    Suggestions?

Search for Dyson Audio Hugo2 Coax cable on eBay.

Edit: Make sure you give him the correct pin configuration on the DAP side.

I’ve read that they have rough texture in the upper-mids/lower-treble, despite being recessed..

    Is this true?

I can't answer very authoritatively, but there's some reading here that echos most of what I've seen over the years:
    https://electronics.stackexchange.c...f-a-vacuum-tube-on-all-the-time-vs-cycling-it

Also I decided to dropbox a copy of that 1960 book Getting The Most Out of Vacuum Tubes because it is cool:

edit: I just OCR'd and bookmarked the document to make it easier to navigate

I don’t know if I have the Chutzpah to read into it that much right now. @atomicbob ’s answer was super clear and what I remember hearing in the past. But thank you @Armaegis

Hey everyone, it's been a while now since I've looked into audio gear, I've been pretty happy with my setup until recently. I upgraded my computer and in the process I lost my TOSLINK connection to my Bifrost Multibit (no mobo output), so I've been having to use the USB Gen 2 it came with when I bought it years ago. I'm noticing that the USB doesn't sound as good as the TOSLINK did and at times my ears get fatigued.

Anyway, I was wondering if I should consider other choices besides upgrading the USB in my Bifrost to Unison. Schiit's lineup is almost completely new since I last looked at buying, and from what I've read the Bifrost 2 seems to be a total upgrade, but I would be hard pressed to get that since I wouldn't use the balanced ouputs. Should I also be considering the Modius? Related to that, I noticed that Schiit doesn't have a Modi/Modius Multibit with Unison in their lineup, can we expect that at some point?

Why not pick up an Eitr to convert the USB from your PC to coax and feed it into the Bifrost? Some of us have moved on to Pi based network bridge to feed our DACs. These devices have optical and coaxial out that you can take advantage of.

    @EagleWings has a great suggestion.

Many computers unfortunately have sucky USB. There are ways to mitigate sucky USB and still use it, but I would bet if it is that fatiguing you are using a laptop.

I've tried both the Eitr and a Pi2AES and like the Pi way better. I would also encourage moving away from USB if possible, can make a big difference.

Thanks for the replies. I initially didn't consider Eitr, mainly because what I read about Unison being a little better. I don't think I'm ready to do the Pi2AES yet but it does look interesting, maybe something to do if I change my desk setup. I'm using a desktop PC that I built so no laptop here, and my ears are prone to tinnitus so it doesn't take much to set off fatigue.

I have a lot to think about now. I could just upgrade the Gen 2 board and maybe that would last me a few more years until Schiit releases their next multibit iteration. On the other hand I'm not sure if I want to put more money into the outdated Bifrost platform - getting an Eitr (or waiting for a possible Modius Multibit) may make more sense then.

Good to hear you built the pc, the USB port implementation on your desktop will be better than a lappy for sure. While you ponder or perhaps wait for a new dac, you can try a few things that may improve the audio quality.

You do not talk about what you listen to but there are a few things that can dramatically improve sound even with a not so great USB setup. eg. Streaming lossy or even Tidal vs audio player software playing lossless files, and so forth. PM me if you want to provide details of your sources and perhaps try a few tips.

Have you tried a USB port that’s physically on the motherboard? On attached via cable may be more noise prone. I’ve also heard that USB 3 ports can be noisier, so maybe also try a USB2 port if you have one.

Don't worry about not using the balanced outs - Bitfrost 2 is excellent whether using SE or balanced. If you want to get the Bitfrost 2, then select it because it is a clear upgrade to the Bitfrost you have now.

FWIW, eitr's are very pricy these days. Since they've been discontinued, they're going for $175-275 on ebay. Personally, I'd consider selling the bitfrost 1 (?$250-300?), combining that with the 175+ you'd spend on an EITR and you're only $150 or so away from a bitfrost 2.

Ditto, Pi2AES all the way over USB.
