These headphones are the result of years of research in acoustics, accuracy and fidelity of the musical signal.
Their design is based on a meanderless isodynamic transducers which significantly reduces losses and distortions from mutual crosstalk in closely spaced conductors with opposite current direction (which is typical for all traditional isodynamic and orthodynamic headphones)

@veritg0 did you register an account this month just to enlighten us on this headphone? if so, your post was an epic fail! I cannot personally stand to witness such a failure at astroturfing, so I will try to help you out

this seems to be the manufacturer's latest website (interestingly, I found two others from 2018 and 2019!): https://headmusic.ru/

it seems one model is available on eBay but from the seller's history it is impossible to tell if they represent the manufacturer or not: https://www.ebay.com/itm/392475997810

it seems his lineup of models is carried by my friend in Russia who deals in headphones/cables, I will ask him his opinion of these compared to other flagship planars, but his answer will probably be a little biased

it seems the cost of the flagship NM-1 is $2500 USD.

lastly, here are reviews from the Russian forum player.ru which has a 27 page thread about these headphones. they are translated only roughly. interestingly, there was also a few pages of drama about a demo unit getting into the hands of a measurebator from the https://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/ website which the manufacturer did not authorize, and the manufacturer claims the unit was tampered with. apparently his conclusion from this debacle is no more review/demo units!

so, does anyone have $2.5k to spend on Russian orthos?

Hi everybody...I'm new on this forum and apologize if the post comes off looking like an ad.

    A little intro about myself:
I'm from California, US and started getting into headphones for the past year as a hobby, prob more serious since the pandemic began. I started out with the usual mid-fi Fostex and Beyerdynamic headphones and found those headphones are too much v-shaped and not really a fan of their treble peaks. I've tried ZMF headphones in the past 6 months and is really happy with their sound signature. Warm bass, lush mids, and slightly rolled off treble is apparently what I like in my headphones. I've demo and eventually own most of their lineup besides the Eikon which I haven't had a chance yet.

As for Snorry headphones, it was a coincidence that I was introduced to them. I hear good things about Kennerton wooden headphones from Russia but was hesitant about the price difference of overseas buyers and I had bad experience with customs importing from Russia. Packages gets delay for months before its released to be shipped internationally. I happened upon a ebay listing of a SI-2 sold by someone within the States that had already bought from Russia. It caught my interest so I did some research and bought a unit to demo.

I've only spent about a week so far so initial impressions about the Si-2 Mk2 carbon:
Headphones feel very lightweight on the head: I can wear for hours without noticing it much at 420g, its the lightest of their lineup. Decently built with genuine sheepskin leather headband w/ adequate padding and earpads. Cups and yoke are made of real carbon fiber. Ear pads are easily swapped like ZMF so pad rolling is convenient, happy that its not glued like Audeze.

As for the sound, its very natural almost reference monitor-like. Snorry's house sound is a touch of warmth in the bass and the FR seems mostly flat with slight roll off in the treble region. Music sounds natural there's no emphasis or "fun" in the tuning so its easy to listen to. The stock pads on the headphones play a big part to the sound signature. Its sheepskin with a dense foam inside, no memory foam unfortunately. It's also quite dense, and falls in between ZMF lambskin and Cowhide pads in terms of stiffness. I've starting to experiment with pad swapping and will report back later....

Thanks for providing some more info :)

Like Kennerton's dual website (Kennerston.store vs kennerton.org), there seems to be a difference in prices for local buyers in Russia and overseas buyers hence 2 different websites with different prices advertising same headphones.

I've reached out to the seller on why he's using stock picture, which he confirmed that he is Snorry. Unfortunately that's the only model on Ebay and he wouldn't sell customizable options on there.

I recently inquired about flagship prices of NM and was quoted the carbon version $2700 while the wood version is $2500.

@veritg0 OK! glad to know you are not a plant from the FSB :)

here is what my contact in Moscow had to say about the Snorry headphones, I edited it a little for clarity since english is not his first language:

personally I am intrigued and may order a pair next month when I get my solid-state amp back from loaner.

the author of the headphones published an article today on his website about the goals he has for sound reproduction:
    https://headmusic.ru/isodynamic/otlichitelnaya-osobennost-zvuka-naushnikov-snorry/

it can be read easily with internet translation

Glad to clear my name haha ;) just a private headphones part-time hobbyist sharing current interests

Yea Snorry is a well known modder in Russia who tinkers with various headphones such as Audeze LCD 2/3, Fostex/Denon series, even Sony CD3000 before moving to his own designs. He still offers headphones mod/repair services on his site I think but its probably a hassle to ship

You can check out his mods on various threads:
    https://www.head-fi.org/threads/instructive-and-sad-story-about-lcd-3-modification-attempt.770678/

This one is in Russian from his official site but a quick Google page translate for English option: https://headmusic.ru/isodynamic/dorabotka-i-mody-audeze-snorry-si-1-v-korpuse-audeze/

Below Graphs published on his site for his various models for reference:

    SI-2 Carbon

    SI-3 closed

NM-1 Wood (measured by an owner for his particular unit)

So far I only own the SI-2 Carbon and preliminary impressions are accurate with the measurements with the stock pads.
I did try pad swapping w/ SE-Monitor5 velour pads and that bumped the entire low end region by a couple DB reminded me of the old LCD2 pre-fazor bass
Alpha pads from Mrspeakers did also add some fun to the tuning but to a lesser degree.
Cowhide pads from ZMF made the presentation a bit drier, pushed back the mids a bit.

I wish that's the case so more experienced people can review it but I doubt that will happen anytime soon. He'll have to overcome global production logistics problem. Its just 1 person making the headphones and cable that's mostly known in local Russian forums. He's keeping prices affordable while providing decent quality sounding headphones but that might change soon due to production costs rising from pandemic. The SI-2 unit I acquired comes stock w/ just the headphones and 1.5m cable packed in plain shipping box. No retail box/case yet for the budget models SI-1/2/3. Only the NM-1 flagship comes in metal case w/ upgraded cable.

I sent an email to inquire about the NM-1. I have no reason to not believe the folks from that part of the world when it comes to audio gear.

The Soviets made some decent orthos back in the vintage ortho days (early 80’s). Some weren’t so great but some were. The groundwork has been laid. Too bad these don’t have Russian written all over them like the old ones. Makes them look badass

Interesting to see if you go forward with this. Sergei seems to have struck onto something special since the Russian Forums are all raving over the NM-1. Who knows? This might be another ZMF, except Russian. With the big boys (Abyss, Hifiman) having their heads stuck up their asses, it would be great to have real competition other than the middlingly engineered planars that have been coming our of China these past couple of months.

3 upcoming Ortho makers coming from Russia: Kennerton/Fischer Audio. Snorry, Myst Audio

Its mostly hand-made goods so there's a bit back and forth email process between you and the headphone maker customizing your headphones unique for you like ZMF did back then before its a little more streamlined now. There's a long wait time between the start of the ordering process and when it actually ships to you but I found its a touch more personal and its the headphones are made specifically to my needs, the boutique aspect of it. There's too much proliferation of mediocre mass produced factory Chinese made units on assembly line these days.

What I dislike is the whole price politics that comes from all 3 companies. There seems to be around 50% increase in prices between local Russian buyers and overseas. This is just for the headphones prices before taking into account the payment conversion fee and shipping. Maybe this is what Russian buyers have to pay when they import stuff from overseas because of tariffs? tax? (just my assumption) The Russian Ruble has been falling so overseas currency should be worth more yet we're being charged even more. Taking cues from Hifiman, Abyss, Audeze and just price matching them to milk overseas buyers feels kinda shitty iono but I guess profits is the end goals for all companies. The mentality of why not charge that amount if some people are wiling to pay for it.

@veritg0 Thanks for introducing something less known here., I honestly think they could be quite interesting.

Regardless, I'd like you suggest a few things on the courtesy of SBAF.
    • Do not copy and paste from marketing statements from the manufacturer. I'd recommend you to remove unnecessary info from OP and leave just specs or links (photos could be fine).
    • Do not copy and paste from others' assessments (measurements, evaluation, other forum posts, etc) unless you fully understand underlying circumstances. If you really need to do so, please paraphrase with your own takeaways (with proper citations as well).
    • It could be better not to include things you didn't have enough experience. It seems that you have only one product. Then focus on the specific product you can more comfortably share your first hand experience. If you really think higher end products worthy, try to rationalize why as much as possible.

Hi all. What an interesting topic you have here. I'm new here. How's it going?
English is not very good, sorry about that.

I really like the sound of planar headphones. And I fell in love with Schiit products (USA).
This set is the best I have ever had.

In the photo are the headphones of the junior model of this master.

Well, this is turning out to be an interesting surprise! Welcome vertig0 and planar. Make sure to introduce yourselves in the introduction thread if you haven't already.

I put it into DeepL which beats google translate IMO:
What makes Snorry headphones sound distinctive
What is the distinguishing feature of the sound of Snorry headphones from the point of view of the author of the headphones.

This is a question that is very easy to ask, but very difficult to answer.
I can articulate what I'm aiming for, but what an individual listener is going to hear with my headphones, I can't really say.

There are very good reasons for that:
Different devices as part of the tract produce different sounds.
Different people have different hearing characteristics and different listening preferences.
All this leads to the fact that it is possible to get reviews that contradict each other on the same piece of headphones. Moreover, I encountered situations when the same listener radically changed his/her opinion about the headphones, simply by connecting them to a different track. That is why I have repeatedly written that headphones do not sound separately, and that the track must be built systematically.

What is the ideal of headphone sound that I aspire to?
    Sound as sound, not...

What could be behind this "not" - you can describe a lot. It's a rather philosophical question.
It's roughly like "Lies are always subtle and varied, but the truth is only one."

Getting as close as I can to what I hear in reality is what I strive for.

Practically, I've been doing this more or less professionally and for a fee for more than 10 years, and my ideas about what is most important for this are of course evolving, which is reflected in the sound of my headphones as well.

What I pay attention to at this point in time when building headphones:

The most common characteristic is the headphones' ability to convey exactly what is recorded and what the rest of the track contributes. It's when the headphones accurately and honestly play back what's fed to them, rather than "their signature handwriting," which is audible and recognizable through any recording, and sometimes comes to the forefront. In that sense, my ideal headphones are "none." If you tell me they are "no headphones", that's a compliment.

The headphones shouldn't have a noticeable signature sound coloration, because it loses the music and what it brings to the recording.

If I take individual parameters, I try to work on the following:
Even tonal balance. Without exaggerating individual ranges. Of course, taking into account the anatomy of the human ear, the acoustic properties of our ears (I emphasize - real ears, not a measuring stand) in conjunction with a particular type of acoustic design of headphones, and the peculiarities of psychoacoustics.
Approximate to natural timbres of all musical sounds. A drum like a drum, a double bass like a double bass, a voice like a voice, a violin like a violin, cymbals like cymbals. "A sound is like a sound, not..." you remember. I'm not talking about 100% hitting, of course, as in any recording, but I strive for it. I should clarify. Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri violins should also be clearly recognizable, in all their variety of sounds. Timbral accuracy and authenticity is what makes it possible to listen to and hear the variety of sounds, not the monotonous way many headphones (and tracks) present them, turning them into "just a violin" at best, or into an incomprehensible thing altogether.
Adequate transfer of the size of musical images. "Big" sounds should be big, small sounds small, medium sounds medium. The bass drum ("barrel", bass drum) should not turn into viola (middle tom-tom), and the double bass into cello by perceived size in space, then at all. These are just the most prominent and obvious examples, it's the same with the rest of the instruments. If a recording is in a room, the size of that room, as it were, must be heard. Don't turn a chamber hall into a symphony hall, a cafe into a stadium, or vice versa.
Good readability of small nuances of sound against the background of big sounds. But not their obtrusive dominance. A balance between micro and macrodynamics. So that they do not interfere with the enjoyment of the music, but if you want to pay attention to them and analyze them, so that they are "as in the palm of your hand".
The spatial texture of the soundscape in general and individual sounds in particular. This is where it gets very complicated. Individual sounds are textured, "convex" in varying degrees, they "breathe", "pulsate", etc. This is largely determined by all of the above points. The difficulty is that a lot of sound devices in the middle and lower price range simply cannot convey this, no matter how hard you try to implement it in headphones.
In a broad sense, all of the above is about increasing the resolution of headphones. I understand it as reducing distortion of any kind as much as possible. Approximation to the reference real sound, which is what it is.

All my patented technical solutions lie exactly in this area.

    Bottom line:

"Sound as sound" is my credo. Amen.

Translated another page for your convenience. I'm digging the lack of bullshit in his statements. We shall see about the phones.

    https://headmusic.ru/isodynamic/dorabotka-i-mody-audeze-snorry-si-1-v-korpuse-audeze/

I get asked about Audeze products and my personal relationship with them on a regular basis, so I will formulate answers to a number of these questions.

    Question:
How do the Snorry headphones compare to the Audeze, which is better?

    Response:
I don't comment on comparing the sound/quality, etc. of my headphones and any others for purely ethical reasons. I am currently the manufacturer of my own headphones, so I should make such value judgments. If I claim that my headphones are better in a comparison, that would be unfair advertising. If I say worse - then what's the point of anyone buying my headphones? To compare and decide what is better or worse for the buyer - it is exclusively his privilege. In this case, to support the conversation about the facts of the device headphones, the impact on specific sound parameters, reliability, technology, etc., I certainly can, but without going beyond these facts and not making value judgments, which can be seen as unfair advertising or anti-advertising. The same answer I will give about any other manufacturers of isodynamic, orthodynamic, planar headphones - Fostex, HiFiMan, Meze, Kennerton, Myst, MrSpeakers, etc.

    Question:
I really like the headband/housing of the Audeze LCD-2, LCD-3 headphones (I have the housing/cups/headband of those headphones left over from their breakage). Can you install your own transducers in them?

    Answer:
I don't like to do this now, but I sometimes go along with such requests, given the history of my mods, which I've been doing for a number of years.

So the answer is yes, you can, at least Si-1 transducers with enlarged flange have been put into such cases several times by owners' request.

On the photo is just an example of such recent work:

    Audeze refinements and mods
You can visually define that you are dealing with such modification by the way how the transducer looks like.

The driver for these headphones has a non-standard flange to fit the housing dimensions (11cm in diameter vs. 10cm) and corresponding fixing holes. There is no backward compatibility with the original Si-1.2 for this reason.

The ear cushions are also different from the standard ones. A different seating diameter, as well as the size, volume of the acoustic chamber. So the sound has some differences from the standard Si-1, although the shape of the ear cushions and damping settings were chosen so that there is not too much difference in tonal balance. The ear cushions are mounted on the flange in the same way as on the Si-1 (with the edge on the ledge) and not as on the Audes (with double-sided adhesive tape).

The transparency of the acoustic grille is different, so there is some more pronounced coloration in the upper middle.

The basic features of the Si-1 sound are retained. The sound of the Audes is different. This is not an actual "repair" of the headphones.

It is a modification of the Si-1 model approved by me and occasionally performed at the request of owners.

    Question:
Is there a warranty on these headphones?

    Answer:
For obvious reasons, I have a warranty only on the transducers.

I don't have such housings. I don't buy them. I also don't have/never have spare parts for them.

I used to make broken/cracked wooden cups for repairs. But that's not really part of the warranty.

    Question:
Have you made Audeze headphone mods before? Do you make them now?

    Answer:
This question brings back some nostalgic memories for me.

Yes, a lot of interesting things were made on this "designer", as well as many other headphones in my time.

I have great respect for this company which was basically the first to revive interest in planar headphones after a long break, I am very familiar with their designs and features, and in my time I learned a lot from them to understand how and what works or doesn't work. I had a pretty interesting period where I bought up and studied literally every interesting headphone I could get my hands on. I took them apart, looked at how they were built, tried to understand why this or that solution was made the way it was, how it worked. Later, they began to send me for repair, restoration, rework. Thank you very much for that to all the headphone manufacturers and their owners. It really was fascinating and interesting. In addition, there is no other way to understand this issue at the moment. There is no special literature on the subject and no training courses either. There are only patents in patent databases and samples of products available for study.

The given direction of activity (fashions of different earphones) for me is not actual about five years. For mods of such kind I take rather seldom, if they are interesting for me, but lately I confine myself more to advice or references to forums, where once I have published details of such modifications.

    Question:
I lost the screws from the Audeze LCD-2.3 headband mount. What are the threads on the screws fixing the headband of Audeze LCD-2.3? You can purchase the headband from Audeze without screws. The screws do not screw into the headband. Where can I buy Audeze LCD-2.3 headband screws?

    Answer:
It is quite uncommon in Russia to buy thumbscrews. You can buy them in American online stores. Sometimes you can find them in stores which sell airplane models, car models, quadcopters and etc. of American manufacture. To find it you need to know the American marking of these screws, which is different from the usual metric system. Enter into the search engine query "4-40 x 3/8 Bottom Head Screw" and find it. Screws with this marking attach the black cup holder parts to the shiny adjustment retractable rods.

    Question:
What exactly is worth tweaking in the Audeze headphones?

    Answer:
I believe that in principle any product (including mine) can be reworked, redesigned, and changed, if desired. It is possible to get huge pleasure from creative process, and from the result received. The result will depend on the knowledge, skills and tools that we use.

I made a variety of changes to the designs for different purposes, not all of which I have ever shown. At first there could be five, ten, or even more not-so-good ones for one successful solution. But when has it stopped anyone, if very interesting ... I will show only some of them, which absolutely positively influence on sound and convenience of use, and I will not be against, if these (and any other) ideas will be used by those who have hands and head and have a desire to do it.

    So:

    Modification of LCD-2 pre-fasor into LCD-3 pre-fasor+.

Except the phasor, for convenience there was made a flange for mounting removable ear cushions not on the adhesive tape, but on the "skirting", an acoustic treatment of the surface in front of the ear. Material selections in the flange - to reduce weight, the headphones are not the lightest...

An acoustically more efficient grille that reduces the coloration on the upper middle:

    Closed design.

I should note that it was done by me even before the closed LCD-XC appeared on the market. Inner cup was of course different, aimed to suppress acoustic resonances by acoustic means, without frequency filters inside.

You can also add here innumerable options of ear cushions, damping, cables, which can transform the sound in a completely different direction, but it is more a matter of taste.

    Question:
What advice can I give to those who want to modify their headphones?

    Answer:
Let me put it this way - personally, I never asked anyone's advice. I took and did what I thought was interesting and necessary. But if I were to give such advice to myself now, I would definitely note the following:

    1. Some economic considerations. If you are trying to make a mod to sound much better than it was originally, but want to save money in the end, it's definitely not worth doing it. This is a very costly thing to do, even if you have accumulated good positive experience, knowledge, etc. Economically more efficient to either buy a higher class of headphones, or turn to those who can do it well. Professionals, if you can find them. Most reckless tampering can lead to irreparable malfunctions (that totally unforgettable feeling when you first ruin a diaphragm with magnets flying out of the clamp).

Dozens of irrevocably ruined headphones, costs for a variety of materials, tools, equipment that won't be needed anywhere else, wasted time of your life that could have been spent on something else - these are all the concomitant moments of such activities. Let me remind you that most of the modified headphones found on the secondary market have less value and liquidity than headphones without interventions. Therefore, to train their skills should be on a known defective or inexpensive headphones, which certainly will not ruin you.

It makes no sense to get into mods specifically for economic reasons. Only for pleasure or learning. The latter is also questionable. Well here is where this knowledge and skills really can be applied with benefit for itself to you if you are not maniacally raving crazy about it all and the question of such a choice does not even arise?

Study the material. Get into the physics of processes. The deeper the better. Yes, yes, read those boring and incomprehensible abstruse books and textbooks. If you suddenly become incredibly interested in reading all this, it's a very good sign.

Practice without a theoretical base does not allow you to do anything consciously, and does not give really high results, and most often does not even allow you to simply repeat at a high enough level someone's excellent result, despite the fact that the author has tried to lay out some semblance of a manual. It is necessary to constantly develop and add to the emerging model of physical processes in the head. At the same time, one should not be surprised and not resist, if the initial notions turned out to be erroneous. Supplement and change. Acknowledge your own mistakes and misconceptions. Recognize your past "teachers and authorities," too.
