Yup, I considered it to. Folks here said Zen Sig is more realistic, while Modius has better bass and sounds wider with better depth. This last point is what sold it to me. IDK, I might always change things later on, but considering the price, the design (looks good with Jot2), I will just go for the Modius.

So I just returned to the office and I am now missing my music while I work. I have been thinking about putting together a budget system to fill the void. Hear is the problem, I keep getting pulled towards the convinces of a pair of over the ear Bluetooth cans over a proper wired system. I'm still doing a ton of Teams calls so I enjoy the freedom to get up and walk around while still taking my calls. Easy switching between my laptop and Android phone is pretty big too. All and all this has me leaning towards the Surface Headphones 2 for convivence.

On the other hand, if I prioritize sound quality I could go with a pair of Meze 99 Classics, 770, or DT 1770's. I haven't heard any of them before nor do I have much experience with closed backs other than my Shure SHR940's. Whatever I end up going with it need to have decent isolation. I'm mainly bored with the SHR940's but I don't know if the Meze's or the Beyerdynamic's are the way to go or much of an improvement. I run HD600's at home so I want to try something a bit different to mix it up, preferably something a bit more pronounced in the low end.

My budget is modest at $500CAD for the cans and a usb dac/amp combo but I am more than willing to go used to maximize my budget.

Anyone else go through the same process? What did you end up going with?

Not really the exact same process..... but if it were me in your exact situation, I would just buy a dirt cheap wireless headset for video conferencing, then build a 'proper' headphone system as a separate thing.

I'm surprised it has to be closed/isolated, your ability to 'walk around' suggests you have a relatively private office. Closed really does limit your options.

It is more of a courtesy thing. I do have a fair amount of space but I tend to keep my door open the majority of the time. I do know that my HD600's would be louder than I would be comfortable with in my space.

I do think the proper headphone system is the right path too.

The senns 650/6XX keep popping up over and over again across multiple forums, I would love to get something like that to abandon mid-fi hell, what's the closest closed (lol) back that y'all can think of? assuming a budget of around 500-750 usd, something more or less matching with the expected compromises of a closed back, but great isolation.

I really need something that sounds thoroughly great whilst shutting that annoying ass dog of my neighbour and my A/C's humming.

@Luckbad I think the LG phones are excellent for on the go and can power stubborn iems and some full size cans fairly well. The big question is what will be your source, Tidal alone? And then there is the whole MQA thing, don't ask me which might be better as I avoid playing any of those when I use Tidal with phone or desktop.

If you use uapp on an LG G-7 like I use, then that will sound better than Tidal on the phones when you use your own redbook files.

As for Tidal on your work PC for example, the ifi Zen dac is very good and a notch up from the LG phone dacs. It should do fine with many iems. And as @señorhifi mentioned I am one who likes it better for HP listening than my Modi 3 both running into a separate amp. No need to spend a fortune in either case.

The phone is a bit less transparent than a good PC running the Tidal app or Jriver into the ifi Zen and the HP amp is not too shabby but not in the same league as feeding a good HP amp.

    @bixby

Thanks dude. I actually have both a Zen Dac v2 and Lotoo PAW S1 on the way. The majority of my listening will be at a desk, I just want something easily transportable and easy to listen to for extended periods.

Quick initial impressions: Lotoo Paw S1 is a really neat little device. iFi Zen DAC v2 sounds better.

thanks for the initial impressions. Will be cool to hear how you like each in your intended use. Enjoy both at least for a while.

    Hi all, newbie here!

Looking at how SBAF love their ZMFs, so I hope I'm in the right place to ask. I've been wanting Aeolus for a while, and I got it on order now. But seeing the buzzing review on the new revision on LCD-X, so I'm having second thoughts. I have never tried the Aeolus or any ZMF for that matter (I blame the pandemic). I've had some experience with HD660s, Elear, Ananda, Sundara, LCD-2C, and LCD2 Closed Back. And for another context, I can get the LCD-X at around the same price as the Aeolus. It's the creators package thing.

The one thing I'm scared of is I'm kinda used to the Audeze/planar sound. It's clear presentation, details and tightness. And of course, the bass. But I also did find it sound a bit artificial compared to Senns and even Elear. I listen to a little bit of everything, but for sound sig pref, I kinda don't have one to be honest. I kinda can appreciate every headphone for what it does well and doesn't. But my concern is, I'm a one headphone kinda guy, if I have two, the least favorite will be collecting dust.

So the million dollar question is, do I get more for that amount of money with the LCD-X? If I can only have one headphone, which one would you guys suggest?

Hi, please read the rules here:
    https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/what-is-sbaf-10-articles-for-behavior.5555/

    And introduce yourself here:

That said, you're fine with Aeolus. It's a great headphone and it sounds like you prefer dynamic drivers anyway. You can always do more research and read more reviews, or you can relax because you've already purchased Aeolus. Break them in for a good while when you get them, and enjoy the music.

Thank you for the heads-up on the rules.

Yeah I have to agree on settling in first then decide later whether its my cup of tea or not. It's very easy to be obsessed and succumbs to the FOMO, and I guess that's why most ppl in this hobby have multiple cans.

I have a question about SET amps that use dual triode tubes. My Woo Audio WA3 uses two pre-amp tubes, each in the 6922 dual triode family, with one tube for each channel. How does one accomplish SET with a dual triode per channel? Are they paralleled? Or do they not use one of the triodes?

I like my Bifrost 2 well enough, and found it more pleasing in many aspects than the Modius that preceded it.

But I'd like to try another DAC or so, for the sake of comparison and possible further improvements. I am not opposed to more Schiit, but I am curious about other companies as well.

I am a value for the dollar type of shopper, but I just turned over a bunch of equipment to raise funds. My budget is higher than usual for me at $2k. New or used, but reliable would be key.

Any thoughts on what should be on my short list? Thanks.

Please give more info on what you’d like to achieve. More detail? Clarity? Laid back? Forward? Tonal difference? And so on.

Lots of Holo Spring 1 & 2 DACs hitting the used market these days, that might be the cost conscious choice.

Waiting on my L3 Spring 3. Probably should not have ordered it but I definitely need to sell my Spring 1!

    Thanks for the replies.

Details, clarity, without getting exhausted. My two channel stuff is either class A for solid state, or low watt tubes.

This was what I was hoping for, though. I haven’t read much about Holo Audio, but give me a day.
