Mostafa Özkent - Gençlik İle Elele

Awesome genre bending Turkish funk music. Yes, the music is as good as as the album cover. Recorded in 1973 and reissued in 2007 to critical acclaim though it’s still relatively unknown. Some of the most danceable music you’ll ever hear. He establishes a groove in the first 10 seconds and keeps it going the whole album. It blends funk, jazz, soul, rock and elements of Turkish folk music in a subtle way that just flavors the whole album with a unique sound.

This one is truly awesome don’t miss out.

sound quality is good for 1973 but not super hifi sounding and clean like today’s recordings. But if that stops you, you have problems. Go listen to Diana Krall and jerk yourself off.

Oooh, excellent idea, I'll go do that now!

Seriously, looking forward to getting caught up on some of these recommendations soon. Too many meetings lately, not much time for music. :(

could also double as the soundtrack for a bad 1973 porno flick... or blaxploitation film (Dolemite, mutha f'er)

Alabaster dePlume - To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1

Tender, relaxing, soulful saxophone based jazz. There is a sense of extreme gentleness of spirit being expressed in this music. It’s as if he’s reaching out and trying to calm your nerves and heal anxious spirits. He in fact used to work as a mental health worker and I believe this was his intention with this album. It is named after two co workers at a former mental health facility. And many of the melodies are based on tunes they would sing together to relax.

The music is mostly just saxophone playing slow melodies with very minimal backup musicians. Sometimes a little shaker or some hushed acoustic guitar or piano. Or a very quiet cymbal splash here and there.

    beautiful music. Good sound quality

another interesting album is a collaboration between Alabaster dePlume and I’m guessing a hip hop artist. It’s completely different music.

Alabaster dePlume & Danalogue - I Was Not Sleeping

This album is a melting pot of hip hop, jazz, soul, rock and electronic music. Hip hop rhythms, interesting electronic sounds of all sorts, jazz melodies, soul melodies and rhythms, rock sensibilities. And very minimal, unique and varied (enough for me to enjoy the album) rapping.

Pretty Unique sound. Good sound quality

Decidedly a metal album but like no other I’ve heard. It’s actually quite beautiful, calm and uplifting. A pretty magical album. Very epic in scale snd mood. Less aggressive guitars, more beautiful clean riffs and lots of keyboard atmospherics and some orchestral sections. Even the screaming (no vocals) is minimal and hushed by being pushed to the background and manages to add intensity rather than darkness. This is part classical music really. But with a wide variety of sounds. The album cover actually does it justice.

Chat Pile - Dallas Beltway (song)

This song is so awesome. So f'ing dark in the best way. Fans of Michael Gira’s work or metal in general should listen. If you only like happy jingles beware. It might give you nightmares.

“Okay, listen, I’m normally a reasonable guy
Listen, okay? You look at me- people trust me
Okay I’m not that kind of person, but
You wanna see what ordinary hands can do to something fragile?

    Watch me”

The Breath - Let The Cards Fall

One of the most beautiful recordings I’ve ever heard. Extremely clear, rich, detsiled and natural.

A genre bending folk group from Manchester. They blend traditional Irish folk music with modern influences. Absolutely gorgeous female vocals that are timeless, full of range, breath and depth. Combined with excellent song writing with interesting riffs and good songwriting and lyrics. Anyone who is a fan of “female vocals” should check this out.

The Breath is former Cinematic Orchestra guitarist Stuart McCallum and singer and lyricist Rioghnach Connolly with members of Cinematic Orchestra.

Joachim Cooder - Over That River I’m Bound

Old Timey Americana bluegrass music put through a blender and infused with jazz, soul, folk, world influences, even rock. It’s fascinating music and so beautiful. Sam Amidon has been trying to make music like this - old bluegrass style songs updated with a modern sound for a decade but Joachim Cooder does it much better than Amidon ever did. The songwriting is just better.

There is a lot of bluegrass fusion out there but most of it is crap IMO and simplistic. The way Joachim effortlessly blends so many styles and musical traditions with a very modern sound is very special. This is not “nu-grass”.

sound quality is excellent. Mood is not super happy, a bit somber but not sad by any sense either. Uplifting I would say.

This makes it all worthwhile. It’s actually a bit cumbersome to make all the links and formatting and I pay for a couple subscription services just so I can include the links here. But all worthwhile if people are getting something out of it. Thank you for mentioning :)

    Neptunian Maximalism- Éons

it’s like a very genre of music mixed together into a chaotic beautiful mess. The intensity of metal, the exploration of free jazz, many rhythms of rock music, many rhythms from around the world. Very interesting rhythms from the drummer but heavy and plodding like metal. Horns basically play free jazz on top of this. The music moves in and out of more melodic sections and then slowly builds into chaos. Some tracks have chanting that conjures traditional African music.

I would call this a metal take on free jazz if I had to put a finger on it. Horns instead of blistering guitars.

it’s really interesting music. Not easy music. It’s challenging. But it is beautiful and well recorded and totally unique and really well done.

This deserves to be played loud on a good speaker system.

Korine - The Night We Raise

Pop rock with excellent song writing and a super duper 80’s vibe. Including synths and drum machine “highlights” (I’m spacing on the word when a drummer hits a bunch of beats after certain number of measures) in addition to real drums. It’s not super profound, it’s just fun, well written music that fits a specific moods and style. It could easily be the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Or any movie set in the 80’s. It’s very upbeat but not happy crap. Songs mostly about love.

    Recording quality is excellent.

    3am Again/Night Heron - Imagine It’s A Carefree Time

For some reason this album is listed under different band names on different places. I don’t know why.

This album defies genres and quick summaries. It’s sort of dreamy rock music if I had to put a label on it. Dreamy spacey guitar chords with a unique sound to them. Very mellow vibe. Kind of funky guitar work. The sound of the recording is crystal clear with a slightly bright, lean, clean sound (but not harsh at all). Really beautiful relaxing music.

Memories Memories - The Life Of Riley

Mellow, melodic electronic music that isn’t headache inducing. Electronic beats and bass with rather soothing and interesting melodies on top with synth and otter instruments. Nice rhythms and percussive additions or flourishes of guitar. It builds and twists and turns. its always upbeat and rollicking but never pounding like some electronic music.

Sound quality is of course excellent
