An Ohio judge has ordered a hospital to treat a COVID-19 patient with ivermectin, despite FDA warnings against it.

Now, when the patient dies, do we get to charge the judge with murder?

Did the judge order this independently or was it that the judge was merely ruling in favour of someone else's desires? Law school is arduous from what I can tell but regardless of that difficulty a lawyer does not a person to give medical advice make (looking it up just now the US Constitution does not specifically mandate that judges possess a law degree?????????).

Yeah, big difference between a judge ruling that a patient get a specific treatment they aren’t requesting versus a judge ruling that a patient can be allowed to get the specific treatment they are requesting.

Probably not, but one would hope that if the doctors are forced to provide the treatment by court order that they are at least protected from any malpractice suit.

Great to see the judiciary supporting Darwinism (for a change)!

I believe I read a doctor not associated with the hospital prescribed the drug, but the hospital refused to administer it. Guy is very sick, even by covid standards, sounds like he is on his last gasp.

Supposedly hospitals were guaranteed immunity from covid related lawsuits as long as they followed the CDC playbook.

Coincidentally a few months ago I had a video show up on my tiktok about people using Fenbendazole to treat cancer. Like Ivermectin this drug is the active ingredient in some pet dewormer products which seems incongruous but just because it produces one outcome (dead parasites) doesn’t mean that the effect it produces isn’t of use in treating other diseases. Like Ivermectin it’s an off-patent drug, there’s no big jackpot in a generic that can be used to treat disease, but there is some mild interest in academic research around the phenomenon like:

Malpractice is a state and local affair so Fed "guarantees" are of limited value. The plantiff lobby is so influential that they will find a way in most states to make $bank$...

LOL. I could care less at this point. Vaccines are available to anyone in the USA and folks can assess the risks themselves and make a choice. If the wife sued to have the hospital inject Drano into her husband, I'm all for it. Darwin award. I simply want people to live by their decision and not blame or seek redress from others.

Interesting, but three cases with no controls whatsoever is nothing but anecdotal. This is why we have clinical trials and perhaps your referenced paper may advance that cause.

It blows my mind that we are so profoundly lucky to live in a time that, when all our global resources are dedicated to it, we are able to come up with not just one but several highly effective vaccines in record time. Most of the world is clamoring for more of these vaccines as rich countries all get first dibs, and still we have a not insignificant number of people who think taking fish tank cleaner or horse dewormer is a much smarter plan than vaccines that have undergone some of the largest clinical trials in history.

Modern health care is the only thing standing between them and the podium. I just hope those people are not taking up valuable hospital resources that would be far better spent on people not competing in the Darwin award finals.

Too true. That said the proverbial "expert" (and their handmaidens in the "media") here in America have lost much (most is probably not an exaggeration) of their credibility on fake WMD, forever wars, sexual revolution and cultural wars, de facto economic oligarchy, CRT and the destruction of the liberal compromise on race, and at least a dozen other things I am not thinking of. You can only cry wolf so many times before people stop believing anything you say - even when you are right.

I can understand a judge compelling the hospital to provide doctor prescribed treatment as not being a crazy outcome, even if treatment is nonsense, becayse at some point you do have to weigh the rights of the patient to pursue their options.

I have little sympathy for people who poison themselves with stupid cures or avoid the only nearly surefire way to avoid dying from COVID-19, vaccination, but the knock-on effect of overwhelmed hospitals and people having important surgeries canceled or being turned away when they're in need of care is truly unfortunate.

I think more than anything we're seeing America's widespread scientific illiteracy really rearing its head at the worst time. Misinformation wouldn't be so dangerous if more people had the tools to sniff it out.

The problem of course is money, in that there really isn’t any to be made from off-patent drugs so there’s no push for studies.

Clinical trials that are still under way and not scheduled to be completed until 2023 and for which the drug companies have received complete immunity. I suspect most of us are vaccinated but I understand why people would be reticent.

Dismissing Ivermectin as horse dewormer or tank cleaner is insanely misleading btw, here’s the wiki entry for it. It’s a commonly used drug to treat humans as well as animals. If you keep reading you’ll see Nobel prize in there.

The time to talk to your loved ones about these things is before you end up in a hospital, and that was true long before COVID was a thing. I'm not sure what they call them in the US, but everyone should have a health care directive / living will / medical proxy or whatever. Make sure your loved ones know your wishes so they can act accordingly when you are no longer able to convey them, and talk to them about theirs. Speaking from experience, having that discussion before something bad happens can certainly avoid the guilt or second guessing that comes from suddenly having to make life or death decisions that were completely unplanned.

This isn't really a corporation thing, it's standard medical procedure even in countries with socialized medicine. If you're not on the hospital's roster, you can't treat patients at the hospital.

In this case, nothing is better. If ivermectin works for COVID-19 (it doesn't) it works (doesn't work) by inhibiting viral replication. For COVID patients in the ICU, the virus itself is no longer the problem. The problem is tissue damage and ongoing immune responses. Administering ivermectin now would be 100% side effects, 0% benefits.

Not sure about that. Drugmakers particularly in the US are quite adept at making a small subtle change to a formulation to obtain patent protection again, a practice called evergreening.

All vaccines in the US are given legal immunity and have been that way for decades. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/05/vaccine-safety-program/589354/

Yes, I expect most reasonably intelligent people know that, but unfortunately that may not resemble the people we are discussing. Even here in Canada actual horse dewormer is flying off the veterinary shelves. You can't make this stuff up.

Yeah, just to put to bed the idea that studies aren't done because there is no money in it.....

Just to start with, it's a huge furphy that drug companies put up most of the money for this sort of thing, most of it comes from publicly funded medical research.

Then, publicly funded medical researchers do an enormous amount of research on currently-approved and off-patent drugs. Repurposing old drugs for new diseases is some of the best and easiest pickings for clinical trials, because the cost and time to market is so much less. The speed with which you can help implement new and inexpensive treatments for patients is WAY better than with new drugs.

For example, researchers at my university were part of huge multi-centre government-funded trial on hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. Even when it was obvious the drugs were useless, the trials were done to completion, because that is what was best for human health and medical knowledge. The same is happening for ivermectin, with the same marginal results.

The real problem I have with ivermectin, is that it is a poison pill for *real* medical research. If you have people in the ICU demanding ivermectin, it means there are no patients left on which to test other things that show more promise.

The problem with freedom is it often comes back and bites people in the ass. People say they want freedom, and then they won't accept the consequences of it. What next for the wife? I bet her husband didn't wear a mask, said f**k you to everyone who asked him to wear a mask, and had known health conditions (likely obesity).

What will happen next is a GoFundMe page after he dies. The nerve.

    P.S.

This is Amir level crap where he says shipping insurance is too expensive, loses a member's HE-6, and then asks people to cover it. This ain't freedom. This is leeching off the the generosity of others.

    P.S.S.

This is also why people cannot drive their 4x4s on the beach in California except in an ever-shrinking stretch at Oceano. People in California cannot handle the freedom. If people were allowed to drive on the beaches, all the beaches would be wrecked, a dozen Subaru WRXs would get stuck in the sand, and two small kids would be run over every day. And then there would be lawsuits everywhere, against people, against the city, against the state. When I was there at Oceano, people were super disrespectful too. One dude on a ATV went the other way on the water side close to us at speed and splashed a bunch of water and sand on our Jeep. That kind of shit gets you a good personal one-on-one talk in Texas, where everybody has guns.

The irony is that even after all this shit happens, the wife probably still won't get vaccinated.
