I have sampled wines from most of the world including all the usual suspects. However my palate had never visited South Africa. @GoodEnoughGear generously offered to send an excellent sampling of the region to expand my tasting experience. The collection received may be seen in the picture below.

    DSC_0693_small.jpg

Also included were two familiar control bottles for assessing condition of wine after travelling, which proved especially wise considering they traveled through the Pacific Northwest USA heat dome late June through mid July.

First the wines were allowed to rest in the cellar for at least a month to avoid bottle sickness. Unfortunately shortly after my wife developed an internal infection and could not have alcohol. Hoping she would be able to share in the adventure upon healing I have been waiting. Now it appears she will have a severely restricted diet for the foreseeable future. I may have to embark on this adventure alone.

One of the control bottles, Mark Ryan The Dissident 2018 has been consumed. Excellent as usual, no signs of damage from shipping during the heat dome event. Others will be opened over the next several months as appropriate meal pairings present themselves while attempting sensitivity to my wife's inability in sharing the experience.

Much gratitude to @GoodEnoughGear for providing the wine and the opportunity for a tasting trip to South Africa.

I'm so sorry to hear your wife may not be able to enjoy these with you, @atomicbob, at least not to the extent you would like. Given that smell is the better part of taste, she may well be able to in some respect. I look forward to your observations in the coming months!

Seven Dollar Sazerac, in the middle of the afternoon at my buddy's new bar. I had $21 worth.

Generally a wino, and not much into the hard stuff, but I have a soft spot for a good rum.

This stuff is decent, but I much prefer the Appleton Estate 12 year I had last week. Been experimenting with different brands lately.

From the chalk belt in Kent. Actually not too bad; from the delicate end of the spectrum to be sure, so not like the full-on dirt of the NZ ones I prefer - but fine for a subtle example.

Cracked the seal on this one tonight upon Mrsdegraded's insistence after listening to Jazz Butcher LPs and mourning the untimely departure of his highness Pat Fish.

Purchased in Port of Spain airport duty free - as you do - 2003, and with me in less than favourable conditions ever since. Still tasting good though.

Trying a few different Tawny Port wines right now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally around or less than ~$50 a bottle right now unless

Smith Woodhouse 10yr was OK / above average to me.
Quinta das Carvalhas 10yr was OK / slightly below average to me.
Haven't got to DOW 10 yr yet. Also plan on hunting down some Royal Oporto 20yr. Both suggestions courtesy of @famish99

I'm not a port drinker, but Mrs. Fastfwd says Cockburn 20-year is:
    • good
    • in your price range
    • pronounced "COE-burn"

Someday everything will be back to normal and restaurants will again stay open past 8:30 on Sunday evenings. But until then, there are only two places in this town that will serve me dinner and an under-$30 cocktail at actually dinnertime godammit.

One of them only serves pizza, so I went to the other one. Started as I usually do there, with a Dirty Old Man (mezcal, Thai chili infused Aperol, lime, agave).

With spicy-margarita type drinks, it's easy to end up with the cocktail equivalent of "boom tizz" -- a lot of heat and a lot of compensatory sweet, with nothing in between. But this one fills that empty space with orange/bitter Aperol and tastes deliciously balanced across the whole spectrum.

Next was this margarita riff: jalapeno tequila, bourbon, cilantro honey, and lemon, with a cilantro salt rim. The honey is less sweet than agave, so there's less distance between it and the jalapeno already, and then the woody bourbon and tangy cilantro are layered into that space over the tequila. I think it's nice. But it's not subtle; you really have to like cilantro to like this one.

Finally, this dragon-egg looking thing. Ancho Reyes chile liqueur, mezcal, lime, Cherry Heering, agave. The mezcal has one kind of smokiness, the ancho chile has another, and the Cherry Heering has a rich jamminess that smooths those flavors out and ties them to the sweetness of the agave. Really yummy.

Unibroue- Don de Dieu It's okay, maybe not a repeat buy, I would re-buy the Fin du Monde.

I like most of the Unibroue classics with Maudite being my favorite.
