So for couple of months i have been searching for endgame totl headphone while slowly realising i would rather spend 2999$ on hookers than supporting the shit some companies are shamelessly selling. I am room limited and i need to use speakers on desk while sitting in front of them, this kinda negates classic loudspeakers (or atleast i think that).

I am not necessarily looking for purchase advice of specific model, i am just wondering if my idea is right, that even studio tuned active speakers can work well for audiophile listening and they are more suited for use on desktop then classic loudspeakers.

edit: feel free to discuss monitors for audiophiles, hookers and blow

I use Yamaha monitors for my desk or when watching shows with friends over, the HS-5 / 10W set I believe. They're made to be neutral but I can say that they do provide a very pleasant and engaging listening experience when your head is in an equilateral triangle with the speakers and the tweeters are at about the same elevation as your ears. I'm sure there's something better out there that would sound even more musical.

My buddy has the JBL LSR305s ($200-300/pair) and loves them for music listening.

I have Anthony Gallo Strada 1st-gens for my nearfield arrangement out of the iNova and I'm really happy with them. They are very manageable relative to studio monitors (let alone audiophile bookshelves) and their performance is relatively room-invariant.

I think a lot of folks use the LS50s -- maybe FOTM though.

LS50 have been FOTM for 4 years, it's about time something takes over.

I know I own them and bias etc but +1 to LSR305, fantastic value. The Yamahas (HS5 and HS8) would be a direct competitor.

You guys are mentioning lot of basic monitors, i was thinking more about the price range of 1000-2999$

Focal solo 6b for example, Event Opal, Neumann KH120 and similar stuff.

I was under the impression that "i would rather spend 2999$ on hookers" meant you didn't want to spend that amount.

    Look into Genelec and Neumann.

I use mine on my desktop. Out of Rag/Yggdrasil, it sounds fantastic.

Same, I would recommend getting some stands with that combo for desk use.

Listened to Dynaudio BM Compact, Focal Solo6 Be, EVE SC205 & SC207, 4" Genelecs, Neumann KH120 and JBL LSR305s today. Neumann's impressed me the most. EVE's was nice too

Monitors are designed with built in tone controls to help you get the sound right in your room. IMO this is a huge plus.

I use Event Opals. They sound great in my tiny (treated) listening space. Nice linear FR curve and great tone. Can really rock at volume with little/no distortion if required. When playing digital music I correct for my room using Sonarworks which fixes a null at 250hz a peak at 110Hz and gives them a bit better extension at both ends by bringing up the extremes where the room/speaker FR goes over the cliff.

As far as I can tell Genelec, Neumann and Event are the three monitor companies where everyone thinks they sound really good in an audiophile listening context and not just as a mixing/mastering tool.

I'd say the opposite, esp next to Adam A series.
Smaller Genelecs are less dark, like 8330.
8050-s are imo darkish, tonally very similar to HD650 (well driven & yadda-yadda), but more clarity in most areas.
Adams tend to bring out female vocals more. Genelecs tend to emphasize male vocals. Treble presentation is very different, Adams have kinda soft, sweet treble but not lacking in bite, while Genelec has more meaty treble, more weight in treble, if that makes sense. Bass and overall resolution is class higher on Genelecs, but so is price.

i use nothing but, monitors for listening pleasure...yea ones i use usually are considered large or midfield types and not ones of typical talk nowadays with these smaller powered types but, i think same concept implies....

a good speaker will blend with everything. there is no specific studio/reference/mastering/audiophile,ect. types..just speakers.

I am in nearfield bliss ... Monsoon MM 2000 hybrid planars sorbothanized...+pre-amp Sansui Au 7700. These are better than my Stax SR-5 sorbothanized... cost used 50 dollars original new value : 200 dollars... these day headphones are outrageously costly ... some nearfield speakers adequately use are better than many headphone...

Heard the 6,5 inch Genelecs (8040) yesterday, must say I quite liked them compared to my last visit. Small woofers just don't give me the lows i desire.

My short bucket list to replace my LSR305 is:
    Genelecs (8040, G Four, M040)
    EVE SC208
    PreSonus Sceptre S8

Anyone have any experience with PreSonus or EVE?
