Oh gawd. I remember when I was very young and my family took an adventure to various parts of the country. We hit an LDS church and got this explanation from some old dude, the custodian of the history of the church. Basically the story of Noah getting drunk and having his dick exposed. The story of course is that the son (who was the progenitor of the whites) got the other son (progentor of the yellows) to cover up Noah's dick. The third son Ham of course didn't do shit. This old dude then pointed to where the sons went across the earth. Ham of course to Africa. The yellow son had the honor being able to live under the white son's tent (consolation prize I guess). Ham was cursed to be a slave for the white guy.

Seriously, I was like WTF. True story.

P.S. And yes, I asked our LDS friends about the views of their church with respect to blacks.

I don't disagree that the modern adoption system is a mess, but I seriously doubt that the people you know would have preferred to be aborted. If so, then they would have committed suicide by now.

When I think of abortion, I think of all of the contributions to society that have been eliminated. Of course, the opposite is true and one of those kids could have been the next Hitler... but I try to think in a positive light.

So very true. The art of compromise has been completely lost on current politicians, media, and the fans of division politics.

My reply to your other post on this topic was facetious, but I'll just say that it makes total sense that once you've developed the will to live you would probably be glad that you weren't aborted. I just don't personally think that should enter into the calculus of whether abortion should be legal since a fetus hasn't reached that level of awareness.

Once someone does have the will to live, they should be able to continue to live and be glad they are alive until they don't want to be alive any more (in a non-transitory, non-treatable sense), then they should be allowed to cease existing, in my opinion.

This why I loved Lower Decks. I didn't care for the first two episodes, but the show really took off for me once it got going. Lessons like this are classic Star Trek. Not so subtle but also not beating the viewer over the head. The lesson in compromise was subsequently applied to get them out of a tough spot with the Ferengi without resorting to the use of violence.

That's my daughter's argument. A fetus hasn't reached full awareness. I'll usually answer "baby killer" - so that she hones her arguments.

One thing I wish is that people would do more often is ask and talk to each other rather than hate. I dunno, but I've always asked pointed questions. It doesn't have to be done in a threatening way either. How many white folks have asked black people how they feel when they see cops, if they feel singled out by cops? Or if they as blacks feel they need to be extra careful not setting off cops? Stats are stats, but perception is reality. I've even asked black folks from the south (who moved to California) if there was still racism in the south. Or how they felt about Stone Mountain*. The answers actually vary depending upon life experiences of the individual.

The key is openness, honest curiosity, and not being a self-righteous prick.

*That was another one of my WTF experiences when I was a kid. Nice park though.

This indicates they need a psychological and/or spiritual doctor, not that we can or should weigh their despair the same as @dasman66 affirmation of his will to life - however such judgements are related (I don't think very much) to the question of abortion and personhood in a CL system. As much as I don't want to live in the progressive village, I would rather live there than the nihilistic village

    • When GF and I got together we agreed this will be a childless relationship even if we do marriage, no exceptions.
      • Was discussed if birth control failed and she was knocked up, quick visit for abortion no questions ask.
    • Year into relationship, birth control failed due to super reason and GF was knocked up.
    • We went to local Planned Parenthood which they were quite professional and even taken some girls out from the backdoor since they didn't want to abort. They were strict to make sure this is something you really want with no pressure.
      • Abortion pill route went fine, they went over all the legal paperwork, strict on how to use the Abortion pill (since it is timed based), and so much more. Even more strict than my doctor's office.
    • Abortion went fine, I paid for it.
    • GF and I have no regrets since raising children isn't something we want, and with GF mental issues that's the last thing she needs to be. Also helps that GF and I upbringing was pretty fucked up and neither of us have strong family support or the monies to even raise a child.
    • FL Forest Child system is pretty terrible, dangerous, and very underfunded.
    • Five years later, no regrets.
      • Even if for example FL would borderline ban Abortion, we would both travel.

I was middle of the road on abortion back then, and I am still middle of the road on abortion now personally.
    • Cutoff is 12-13 weeks max like the other European countries with elective abortions.
      • Beyond that you better have a good reason like a health issue.
    • Both political parties in the US are using abortion as another issue as a litmus test, which both sides are too extreme on this issue.
    • Some restrictions are perfectly fine, 24-hour waiting period is reasonable, need to visit an office to obtain the abortion pills is a good idea due to how strict requirements it is for timing including if you are passed the cut-off time to use it.
    • No public funds to go to any Pro-Abortion group and Pro-Life group, this is for both state and federal level. While GF and I had an excellent Planned Parenthood experience, I don't want my tax money go to them. They can run their business as a business and accept all the private donations if they want.
    • Voters can make a decision if this is want they want in their state or not (AL and WV recently amended their state constitutions where more/less abortion is not a state right and added personhood language by popular votes).
    • The shamming on both sides is getting stupid.
My middle of the road viewpoint is similar to the majority of what polling is saying, but is also too extreme for both sides....meh.

Shaming on a political, communal, familial, and personal level is often toxic and almost always a complete fail even when it is not. Particularly in our culture that defines its self understanding against shame, it's worthless. Shame is a primal emotion, one of the most powerful, and mostly destructive. Handle it like the nuclear waste it is. Politically it is one of the common reflexes to "the other", for lots of reasons. Of course I fall victim and misuse it myself on occasion, but the older I get...

A nanny? Never had a nanny but if I had a nanny as dedicated to my well being as the administrative state, I would not survive 6 months.

hmm... by extension, I guess you wouldn't mind if someone came in and injected you with sodium thiopental in your sleep. I don't think you'd mind no longer existing...

    ------edit------

of course, this response is facetious. I don't think whether the person is aware of being killed or not should enter into the equation. By that argument, I guess we could say that a 6 month old doesn't have the self awareness to have the will to live? Or maybe its 3 months? Or one month? one week? one day? ok, lets make it a couple hours is ok.

Doesn't matter, someone has artificially caused that life to cease to exist. Everything that person could have done for society is lost forever. Maybe it was the cure for the common cold (because the cure for cancer is over-used). Maybe it is the next Mozart or Michelangelo. Maybe Einstein or Edison. Or maybe it was just a normal person... like a nurse that brings a smile to a patient's face in the hospital.

Who knows, no one ever will.

    -------edit------

FWIW, I happen to agree with you on assisted suicide for the terminally ill. Abortion is probably the only topic where I fall into the social conservative camp.

    ------edit-------

And I would be willing to compromise to @YMO 's viewpoint of adopting a more European stance on abortion. Would I be happy? No. Would the pro-choice side be happy? No. But that's compromise.

I'd mind if I knew, but I have self-awareness unlike a fetus. Of course once I was dead I wouldn't mind, since I would again lack self-awareness

I really just don't find the "what could have been" argument compelling at all personally. You could go either way with it, good or bad, but ultimately if you're not born, you're not born, whether it's because of an abortion, a miscarriage or a car accident. What's the worth of speculative timeline that never happens?

As I said previously, I tend to look at the positive and not that one of those people could be the next Hitler.

But to a certain extent... you're right. Dead is dead. Doesn't matter if its a heart attack, covid, abortion, drunk driver, drive-by shooting, etc, etc.

I need to check out of this discussion

I agree, if it's not good your mental health. I often find myself engaged in conversations or arguments related to my life circumstances. History, trauma, PTSD etc, that it's really hard to disengage from because I get compulsive about defending my position since it's so tied in with my livelihood. Take a step back, relax if you need to. I personally hold no ill will towards anyone at all in this thread, we're all Friends here. I apologize if I come off as combative. I am just genuinely curious about other people's positions.

Is the argument really going to be equating humans to the animal kingdom? What's after that, a corn stalk has more self-awareness than a fetus?

Now I'm really checking out... the discussion has turned udderly ridiculous. (edit... pun intended)

Elephants mourn their dead and have funeral rituals, dude. Birds have complex language and can teach each other skills through it. They can even describe a friendly human's face and body in a way other birds can recognize without having seen them. Humans believing we're special is narcissism. There are many animals out there with equal (or even greater, for some tasks) emotional and intellectual comprehension than humans
