Word is that a standard feature (ability to disable) in teslas too? I've only driven other people's electrics who had it on... (edit: seems you can adjust the level but no disable.)

I don't see any stupid purchase there. Love those years of boxy SL's. Congrats on the pickup.

90% chance a Mercedes car mechanic will think fondly of you when they pay their kids college tuition bill.

100% chance you have zero regrets about getting to drive and own this car for a while.

Not everything's about the money. :)

But believe you me, gas cost aside (i am European, you guys complain too much when its 1/4 of the price we pay), you will be much happier.

Our gas is cheaper, but it's been a long time since it was that much cheaper.

From https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/gasoline_prices/ , average gasoline cost in the States is 1.15 EUR/liter (and in California it's like 1.35-1.40 EUR/liter).

The Benzes of that generation were built like tanks; enjoy the smooth power of the V12, but sympathies to your wallet for potential maintenance costs!

That's totally freakin awesome. For several years I've been hunting for a severely depreciated W140 in lightly restorable condition. R129s and W140 shared a lot of similar engineering. One thing to look out for the (i think) 90-94s is MB biodegradable wiring harness insulation. It'd be good to just confirm that the lower and upper engine harnesses were replaced under warranty earlier in the vehicle's life. A lot of the 90-94 MBs didn't even get past 20k miles before the harnesses started shorting out all over, so if yours is running now with no CEL or sensor malfunctions, it's likely a non-issue, but you never know.

Also, equal length headers and straight pipes. F1 noise. Mercedes-Benz Ferrari.

Yeah, I looked at my wiring, it looks alright, hopefully has been replaced, but as it is still working great I think it must have been. Found out the top hydraulics have been replaced which is good as those fail.

Lol you don't know how many people have told me to go for the equal length headers. Some day. First I have to get it mostly sorted

Day full of dumb stuff on the road today, but still wishing we had:
    1. something more akin to the autobahn or just being able to drive as you see fit per the conditions
    2. ACTUAL driving improvements
    3. some sort of "forced" competency akin to can't drive = lose license given that this is just a different version of "dangerous at any speed" - ironically the first auto death of someone I knew personally happened at very low speeds,
    4. Still wish the big SUV or big truck for no reason trend would reverse. Again, if you actually need your big truck for off roading or your job site or whatever, not a problem, you are not in the "no reason" crowd. In all seriousness, in several years of ownership, I've been able to take my 240 to Costco and fit everything I need inside unless I suppose I wanted an entire outdoor furniture set with fire pit, shade structure, and cover, a long board, or gym machines, or something of this nature. In which case, I suppose a delivery service or truck rental would still be much cheaper than buying a big truck or maybe SUV just for "this 1 time".

I'm also extremely tired but can't sleep and may have consumed a few beverages and will probably wonder why I posted this the next time I read stuff on sbaf. OK complain train over.

Now that you have a European money pit shaped like a convertible, I highly recommend using FCP Euro for any parts needs, if you're going the DIY/shade tree mechanic route. They've got a lifetime warranty on everything they sell, which is ridiculous and awesome.

I made a pretty spur of the moment decision and traded in the Supra for an R8 this weekend, got to take it home yesterday. Was chatting about cars with a friend of mine Friday morning, and ended up going down to the dealer to test drive a 2014 911 Carrera S and this 2014 R8. The 911 was nice, but it didn't feel fast at all, and sounded kinda like a lawnmower if Im being honest. The R8 on the other hand, I knew I had to have like 2 minutes into the test drive. That motor sounds freaking incredible. its actually a smidge slower than my Supra, but man...its such a better drive and obviously still more than fast enough. And is also my second favorite looking car on the market. Why did Audi ruin it with the 2nd gen?

Its a 2014 V8 with the DCT and only 17k miles. The stick woulda been cool, but for a daily, the DCT will work just fine for me.

I guess this means I'll have to change my profile pic...
