Can you post personal impressions of your experience with the Fiio X-series DAPs? They look like what iRiver could be these days without the A&K bling bling B.S.

I am serious. Solderdude was positive about his Fiio DAP and for the money he thought it was good.

I don't do portable DACs and amps. Seems silly with the extra bulk. The biggest part of my smartphone decision does involve a lengthy audition with music and audiobook content, however.

Would rather save my money on gear for at home listening. I feel that I wouldn't appreciate hifi audio as much if I'm running around doing chores or sleeping on a loud plane.

With that being said, my iPhone 5s and portapros serve me very well. If I'm really in the mood I might throw in a Total BitHead in there.

DX-50 with about 400 gb of external storage (plugs right into the OTG connector). IEM's, either Sony mdr-ex1000, AKG k3003 or Zero Audio Tenore. Or, since headphones are everywhere on the street these days, whatever phone I feel (usually either HD-650, Audioquest Nighthawk, FAD Pandora 6 or Beyer DT-48 when I am in one of those moods).

I definitely agree with this mindset. I'm a bit confused when people are stacking multiple bricks on each other for a "portable" arrangement.

However, guess I'm another Fiio X5 + UERM user checking in. Although I wasn't planning on such an expensive portable arrangement, it's come in handy on half a dozen cross continental flights, and having the X5 be a USB DAC is kinda handy.

I use HiFiMan RE-400s and an old iPod Touch for stored music or my Moto G for streaming.

I am noticing that the seal I get from IEMs is a blessing and a curse. It's great that I get a massive reduction in external noise, but I get a massive INCREASE in internal sound. Especially when I am walking I hear the pound of every footstep I make and my own breathing is magnified as well. IEMs are great for travel on airplanes where you need to travel really light and sit still for a long time. But for commuting by foot I would rather have some closed cans. So far this is my short list:

    -Noontec ZORO II HD
    -Sennheiser HD-25
    -Sennheiser Urbanite
    -Fostex T40RP

I might get a portable DAC/AMP like the Oppo HA-2 or a simple amp like the CMOY, but that's really only because I hate digital audio controls and I would much rather have a knob.

I do plan to get a nice CIEM one day. I don't want anything super high end because that is money that can go toward an LCD-2

I heard Austin's modded MDR-1R at a meet last year, and would take that over the two Sennheisers and the (stock) Fostex; I liked Beats Solo2 more too. Best luck!

For outdoor use it's usually AK100II or AK Jr+new ALO Rx - UERM.

For home portable use - UERM is usually replaced by Koss KSC75. Occasionally AT EW9 also gets some head time.

Tried a gazzilion of portable closed backs, eventually decided nothing is superior over UERM in portable.

A smartphone and efficient headphones. I have never seen the need for anything more than that.

However, my needs aren't everyones...I could totally see spending money on a good portable rig if I traveled constantly.

Oi, I still have a rebranded Teclast T51. My first-ever "serious" DAP, that was a truly remarkable experience. UI sucked really hard, but sound-wise, it was hard to beat back then.

I'm usually pretty happy with UERM or KEF M500 plugged into a smartphone or laptop with GOv2+.

Probably use UERM more than anything else these days actually.
