    A needle exactly!

If I knew what else she was in her name would be known and this question already answered. Unfortunately I do not know what else. Longshot for sure, even searching list of NZ or AUS shows or films did not help. It is going to be someone who saw it that solves it.

    2 reactions:

1 - I can't believe you were able to track this down. I didn't even know a record of what I watch on Amazon exists (at least, not one I could access). That is inspired on your part.

2 - That show looks great! That's my kind of material.

This is not really related, except tangentially in that it's pretty dark and involves personal histories in pretty wild ways. Have you seen the Australian reanimation series, GLITCH? It's truly a wild ride. The acting is excellent--all people I'd never seen before, but have seen since.

#1 I found here using the quick method for Amazon Prime https://www.engadget.com/2016-08-18-netflix-amazon-viewing-history-guide.html

#2 The show is good, yet not outstanding.

I'll check out glitch although it may be too dark or not. :)

    Cheers

I thought The Kettering Incident had a lot of promise. A darker, adult Stranger Things. Debicki was great, she does moody and complicated well. Show didn't get renewed though. Thems the breaks.

This is like my quirk. I like alternate universe stuff like Fringe and Man in the High Castle.

Orville season 3, retitled Orville: New Horizons.

The writing is tight. Less jokes. New sets, better special effects while maintaining the slightly cheesy looks. This season touches on current events, controversies, political disagreements without shoving it down our throats. And it's science fiction! High-tech suicide, bug aliens, bored immortal beings, star-child (setting up for more development), transgenderism (from prior seasons), time-travel, space amazons, and robots with feelings.

Wow, we actually got Star Trek. Much of this we've seen done before in ST:TNG, but hey, I'll take it.

Instead of the Asian Vulcans, the Middle-Eastern/South Asian Vulcans, and the African Vulcans, all together meditating on logic in background scenes, we instead get a bunch of weirdo-looking aliens. Instead of <insert-protected-class> as the new highly capable super smart shipmate who can visualize in multiple-dimensions, we get a small blonde girl! Hahaha, talk about messing with our expectations.

Alex Kurtzman: rest your head in shame.

P.S. That time travel episode was great because it was a human story. And I hate most time travel episodes because they are usually cheap.

Less episodes than prior seasons; but they run longer, and the writing it good enough to sustain it. In fact, the extra time is needed.

The actors look like they are having a lot of fun.

The only Star Treks I really liked were the original series and the recent reboot movies. I couldn’t ever take TNG too seriously with kids running around and the ship shrink having a command presence on the bridge.

Did you ever watch Firefly? That’s way more what I want to see in a space themed show but it’s a very different perspective on the idea of the omnipresent space government.

Yeah Firefly, you mean the true lineage holder of Cowboy Bebop, not that POS Netflix special with 63 year old John Cho as Spike and Alex Hassell as Voldemort?

Well, it's time to bring this thread down to terra firma, or a sordid version of it. I'm 2/3s of the way through the Netflix documentary, GIRL IN THE PICTURE. I assumed I'd hate it and quickly stop viewing, but that hasn't happened.

I've been overexposed to a certain kind of assembly line cable TV true crime show--you know the type, with a knowing, voice-of-god narrator and nearly all the rest being acted recreations of crimes and crime scenes. It's tiresome, overdone, and ultimately disrespectful, since it has the effect of commoditizing victims and their stories. I assumed GIRL IN THE MIRROR would be like that, but it's anything but.

There are recreations of a sort here, but they're restrained, taking up little screen time. The centerpiece here is the crime--a real layer cake of horribleness, with so much going on. The documentary reveals all in a back-and-forth expository style, examining and then reframing facts, often with different witnesses narrating. It makes this tale cinematic without dramatizing it. That's a fine line, and this doc walks it well.

Maybe I'll hate it in the final 40 minutes. But so far it's a winner--not to mention one of the more surreal crime tales I've ever seen. "Man's inhumanity to man" barely covers this...

Binge watched the entire season of The Terminal List last night and this AM, stayed up WAY too late in the process. It was right up my alley as I get into govt. conspiracies/corporate greed story lines. The very end was somewhat easy to figure out before it actually was shown however. Some of the characters were a bit stilted but Pratt did a good job. Overall an enjoyable watch.

Thanks @purr1n for the recommendation on The Orville. Just goes to show you how far behind the times I am as I hadn't heard about it before now. I'll give it a go soon.

The Orville started a little rocky, almost being a bit too Family-Guy-in-Space with some of the humor. But it quickly found its stride, and it became very good - both as a spiritual successor to TNG when Discovery and Picard were very different styles, but also a great show on its own merits.

I was a huge fan of the original Star Trek series, even going so far as going to a few conventions many years ago (met James Doohan and Nichelle Nichols). Didn't like any of the series that followed. The only ST movie I liked was Wrath of Khan.

^ This. A good warning. Season 1 was at times very much Family Guy doing a riff on ST:TNG. Season 2 less so, more development toward solid sci-fi. Season 3 is when it gets serious while still having its Seth MacFarlane moments (but toned down). The minor renaming of Season 3 to The Orville: New Horizons is indicative of the change.

So NOPE was fantastic. Much better than Peele's last film US.

Loved the surprises and the mood and atmosphere he was able to build off something so simple. It's the kind of film that is able to be about something without being preachy about it, and still be entertaining first and foremost.

Nope is epic and Jordan Peele's best yet. He's really grown as a director. Clearly he's outdone anything from M. Night Shamalot, although Signs comes closest. Peele's got this wicked sense of humor too that he fits in seamlessly with this film.

Keke Palmer who plays the one of the leads, or arguably the lead, is a standout. Her character is well written and one that feels black. She's not written as a white character who is played by a black person (Disney/ABC shows cough cough). She's not reduced to a sexual or unga-bunga creature (I don't remember seeing any young black lady so covered up in a film), but she exudes hotness because of her determination (both the scrappy good and the unwisely opportunistic bad kinds).

And thank you Jordan Peele for making the rest of the characters real and not just tokens. No one else is going to do it because Disney goes about it like meeting social quota. Steven Yeun's Jupe character was a trip because I can't remember any other Asian male cast in a non-pigeon-holed role or given an opportunity to play a character that is just totally out there. Peele doesn't bother with any Asian-ness because he knows that would just end up as another Hollywood troupe, e.g. son of Korean corner store owner, son who disappoints evil dad with high expectations, etc.

I can see some audiences having a problem with its pacing because most people have ADD today. This is just a warning to modern audiences. The pacing is a throwback to films from a earlier era (not that long ago, let's say before Marvel) where directors take their sweet time to develop a scene. However, the film is never boring as we get drawn into the film more and more toward the end.

The final action climax is a masterpiece. It's fairly long, but it's written like a piece of great classical music with its sections, themes, up and down tensions, etc. I was stuck to my seat. Michael Bay should just kill himself.

Finally, nice anime (a la Evangelion, etc.) touch on the final form. Haha. Mr. Peele, you are awesome.
