What niche stuff do you play? I guess I'm confused as to the use case and so I'm not sure what to recommend. A beefy gaming laptop only makes sense if you really plan on gaming in different environments. Otherwise I've found a gaming desktop is better 99% of the time. You can't beat the immersion of a big, decent display on a desk at home or a large OLED TV.

I don't have space on my work desk due to living in a small apartment, so for now I have to focus on laptops. One of the niche games is DJ Max Respect, which is only available on PS4 and PC. The developer recently ported it to PC, and they made it clear that it will not be brought to XBOX since the game is mostly aimed for the Korean market.

I would love to do a desktop, but I have no space below my desk and my top space is limited. Would be good to find a Gaming PC that is small enough but also powerful enough without taking up too much space. Super hard considering my limitations ATM. On the plus side, not hard to move a laptop around.

Do what i did, more than 10 y ago, i barely watch(ed) TV so i just connected my PC to it. Yes it's not ideal but to play at 1080p (at the time worked wonders). Then i went and built only mATX or ITX systems to save space and i have been doing that until now (ITX only now). If you can have a case of 20L near your feet consider going that route.

What other games are you playing? And your concern is with size, right? Or is portability important, too?

I use ITX only. My zaber sentry is smaller than my PS5 and has a 1080ti in it. I have a louqe ghost with a 3080 and zen 2 in it (I could easily run a zen 3 in here as well).

I haven't gamed that much, so if I had something that can play PC games it would be focused on Serious Sam 4 and other stuff that needs less power. I gotta admit, some of those ITX cases are super tasty. Time to research this one and see if I might do a desktop route... However, if I decided portability it is time to go back to laptops....

Decisions are fun....I also need to see if I can pull off an ITX case on my computer area....research tonight....

Posts like these are what help me think....

@3X0 is always on top of the new ITX hotness. He's taken up the mantle of "most nerdy builder on the forum" since I had kids/started not having time for it.

Thanks everyone once again for their feedback. After reviewing my options (including use case and $$$), I actually decided to be a prep and pre-ordered the OLED Switch. If I wanna do gaming right on PC then not only I have to get a desktop/laptop, but I have to get a great gaming monitor that does Freesync/G-Sync. With the cost and how often I'll actually need the gaming tech, it is just damn easier to repurchase a Switch since there's still tons of stuff that I can play on it just fine.

If this makes you happy, go for it.

I'll say the switch is a phenomenal device and has seen the majority of my gaming time over the last few years due to the portability.

I ordered this yesterday. Currently all 4 members of our family are taking classes of some kind so we were needing a new laptop asap (wife and I both tend to work in multiple locations). My son and I are both gamers but future is uncertain whether we’ll stay in the US or not so not ready to commit to a new desktop build. So I went all in with minimum requirements being Ryzen 7 5800 and 3060 GPU. Ended up with Ryzen 9 5900HX (woohoo!). Probably could have saved a couple hundred bucks if I’d had the luxury of waiting for a sale but we just needed a third laptop pretty quickly. Can’t wait to fire it up. I’ve never had a “gaming laptop” as I’ve done my own PC builds for many years and never had a need for mobility in PC gaming.

Well, since I'd just gotten my lappy, gonna necro this thread!;)

Just got a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro:
    AMD R7 5800H
    2x 8GB DDR4 3200MHz
    RTX 3070 (140W TGP)
    1TB M.2 SSD (will add a 2TB M.2 drive for more storage)
    WQXGA (2560x1600) Res

This laptop will be used mainly for gaming while I'm away in Toronto and Chiangmai, just gotta have my gaming fix! It'd also be used for media consumption like watching ripped HD movies, Spotify and basic surfing the net. Below is a pic of it, trying it with one of my spare KBs, a KBParadise V60 Mini, does gaming pretty well (using UT3 as my test game). Gonna swap out the V60 with one of my HHKB Pro 2 (forgot I have two of 'em in storage)

Nice new laptop. I have a Ryzen 9/3070 combo laptop which def runs warm when I game so I just wanted to suggest to you THESE little stands for your laptop. They allow a good bit more air flow underneath and work well for me.

Nice looking cooling pad. I've got a similar cooling stand with 2 fans (this one) that I use if I'm home. But I don't have enough room in my laptop bag for both the cooling stand and my portable USB-C monitor so I go with the flip up legs when I'm away from the house.

Mine's kinda overheating, CPU went pass 100C which I think is unhealthy in the long run. Since mine has some sorta premium care bundle, I've called the service center and have requested that they come and clean up the fans, and even apply some thermal paste. Meanwhile, will see how much it'd cost me to add a 2TB drive, I know, it's simple and I can do it myself, but I don't wanna void the 23 month of premium care that is still in effect.

@OldDude04 , is that a Zelotes vertical mouse? Sure as hell looks like the one I have....

The newer Ryzen 7 and 9 mobile CPU's run pretty warm during heavy use. They list a max operating temp of 105°C. Which is why I use a cooling pad or the flip up legs on my laptop during anything other than regular browsing/checking messages.

Sure is! It's a great vertical mouse for the money too.

The SK Hynix P31 and newer P41 are really great M2 SD drives that run cool. P41 just came out. I picked one up on Prime Day sale.

I cap my temp at 86C when I’m running Warzone. Seems to be a good spot.

I gotta say, Lenovo support in my neck of the woods is outstanding. With Premium Care, the tech could have come yesterday, just a day after my call and email, but I was gonna be out the whole day, so he came today. Upon seeing the choked fans, he told me he did not have the cleaning tool with him, but he did have a whole new HSF assembly which he'd replace mine with. Saw him applying thermal paste as he went about his work which he'd completed in record time. I tested my lappy, after playing UT3 a few rounds, I checked the temps, CPU hung around 80C with GPU at about mid 70. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy with the result....

Oh yeah, while I was at it, I'd also added my 2TB WD NVMe M.2 2280 SSD and am now in the process of populating it with my fav games. I'll be back with pics a little later.

I don't have the uber premium Lenovo care package, but I do have the extended standard warranty and have taken my laptop to their authorized local repair center and have always had great service. But that's maybe more a testament to the local service centre who happens to be their rep rather than speaking of Lenovo itself.

Below the replacement, really nasty clogged up fan intakes....
After, the whole fan/heatpipe assembly was replaced, really happy I'd gone with Lenovo....

I'd gottena WD Green 2TB drive, yes, I know it's not a good drive spec-wise, but it fits my usage scenario. I'll be install games in it, from Steam and EGS, and WON'T be constantly rewriting and deleting files from it. Basically, the games I'm installing in it will be there just about permanently....
