I didn’t know there was a dinner after CanJam but I would love to join if I’m allowed :)

I will be attending both days… as a participant (can’t afford a booth as of now)

Lol, this is pretty informal. There isn't actually a "spot" that's been picked either. We usually do this on the fly.

    Edit: I’ll be going Saturday.

I'm down for dinner after if I'm free. I can suggest places too depending on group size and what people are in the mood for. I most likely won't attend the show but not totally sure yet.

Also, FWIW, last time I went, they weren't able to validate parking properly so I had to pay ~$30 for 1.5hrs of parking on top of the ticket cost. Not huge but annoying none the less.

That's quite a bit more expensive than shooting him a PM on head-fi :p

haha true, but I think I could accomplish more in an hour chatting with him face to face than attempting to DM him back and forth for months on end

A week away. Just bumping this up to see if anyone else who's going (or is nearby) to do dinner on Saturday night. Only night I can do this sadly.

I'll be posting here hopefully around 5 ish about where we can meet up before deciding where to go, if you are at Can Jam. Otherwise when we decide where to go and what time to be there, I'll post it on here.

Enjoy your day wherever you are.

    I’ll know by 5.

Are we allowed to bring (portable/wearable) gear at CanJam, I forgot?

Sorry folks. I had issues getting to the dinner destination and let frustration get ahead of updating this. Hopefully I won't be in charge of this next time...

Enjoyed my time at and after the show.

If anyone else is wondering, here are some very brief thoughts on some of the gear I heard. Meet conditions were loud and almost all listening was on unfamiliar chains and gear.

    - Raal CA-1a was like the SR1a with a little less "top level performance" and much less edge on the sound. Also fit my head much better than the SR1a - at max size, CA-1a was actually a little bit loose, no pressure points. Can't comment on if bass was "more" than SR1a as the songs available didn't have enough bass that was low enough to tell.
    - New 2022 Utopia got the Clear MG treatment but to a much lesser degree. It still sounds like a Utopia, but the Utopia signature sound is less pronounced and replaced with more of a "pleasing for the masses" sound signature. It's definitely much easier to listen to, but it comes at the cost of covering up some detail retrieval in the highs - I suspect it's still there, it may just have to be coaxed out with the right chain.
    - edit: looks like they've already been mentioned here, so I'll say it - new ETA prototype flagship was good. I want to listen again when they're officially ready.
    - ZMF Caldera was good - I would describe it as relatively clean, less planar timbre and wall of sound effect, and a neutral sound signature that was then lightly to moderately, depending on your perspectives, ZMF sauced in the FR and with some ZMF richness. Didn't have the same type of thick and rich organic sound as the dynamics, but it was definitely there.

On a random aside regarding the Caldera - I was listening to the ZMF stuff on an unknown to me amp fed by a dCS Lina. At first the DAC sounded very off to me, especially on any spoken syllables, cymbals ringing, color in instruments, etc... until we cycled through the settings and realized that someone had set the output to 6V (most DACs output closer to 2 or 2.5-4V max). After the Lina was set to 2V it sounded much better / cleaner. Hopefully this means the recent DAC loudness trends will either hit a practical limit or reverse soon. @Clemmaster also let us try the Caldera on his Bakoon stack and the sound changed vs the above but not by as much as I expected. Additionally, current and voltage drive modes were both closer in sound than I expected on the Bakoon - makes me wonder if these headphones are easier to drive than most planars.

    - Listened to a few other things as well but I didn't particularly like it and/or I thought it wasn't "good value". Not sure if I can blame the mfgs though given that the tables aren't cheap and demo-ing value oriented gear or more boutique low volume gear may not make financial sense. I actually wonder if Canjam would be more interesting for both the attendees and the vendors if tables were $1k or even 500 or 250 each... Also not a lot of chi-fi this year probably due to long covid isolation periods upon re-entry.

    - Didn't get to hear Modi 2 MB, any LTA amps, any Pro-ject stuff, or to re-listen to Soekris DACs as I arrived a bit later in the day and all the tables were still busy. If anyone else heard this stuff, please share. (not complaining - if anything, I'm hoping this means that the companies get their money's worth given how expensive a single table at Canjam is).

And yes, Denise at Schiit was great to talk to (didn’t have time at Austin) and everyone in the ZMF room was cool too… I probably threw a few of them off with what was probably an annoyed face at the dCS stack initially but yeah, Clemmaster and the ZMF team knew to check we got it fixed. Didn’t get to talk to other vendors or netforce much as they were all slammed.
