I've only heard of her. Isn't she considered the beginning of classical music?

From me, this one. To be honest, I wasn't listening to it this time, but reading the lyrics, but hey...

Calling anything "the beginning of classical music" is a bit of a thorny question...most of the music history classes I've taken go back to the ancient Greeks, and that's only because that's the earliest notated music we have. Von Bingen is to my knowledge one of the earliest known composers of a significant body of work, but she wasn't the first to write plainchant, and you could make a reasonable case for "the beginning of classical music" being the polyphonic organum of Leonin and Perotin. It's kind of a thorny question, but she was certainly a master of plainsong, so it's probably easier to leave it at that and just enjoy her work for what it is.

I'd been experimenting with EQ'ing my HD800SDR's (result: EQ is interesting in its own way, but I'm not sure I'd want to listen that way consistently), so I needed a recording I was intimately familiar with for a reference. And of course, now that my experiments are done, I'm just enjoying the music. So, Bach's b Minor Mass, performed by the Dunedin Consort & Players under John Butt.

The b Minor Mass and I have quite an interesting history. My high school choir performed the Credo from it when I was in high school, and it was probably the piece I had the single greatest number of recordings of back then, when I was an avid Baroque CD collector. It's also the piece I've had the hardest time coming down on a reference recording for -- the Rifkin recording is a classic, but the scholarship and understanding of one-voice-per-part is a bit too old to 100% hold up, the Junghanel is a favorite of mine, but there are quirks about it that I don't 100% agree with, I spent hours with the Koopman, but I'm a big one-voice-per-part proponent and Koopman is a major opponent of that school of performance practice, &c. However, I'm now finding myself coming back to the Butt recording over and over again, and consistently agreeing with (and enjoying) it. Which isn't to say I agree with it all the time -- e.g., I feel like Butt could've had a bit more attack on the entrances in the Credo, and I wonder if there's a little of that "polite" British style creeping in. But overall, Butt nails it, which is quite a thing with a piece I personally consider the greatest piece of art humanity has ever produced...definitely a recording I'll be coming back to for years to come.

LOL - Yeah I missed that, the price I pay for opening other tabs while listening to music! Maybe the violinist next to her did something inexcusable such as improvising a part for a wind instrument.

This rendition of one of my favourite Schubert works.
    Interesting instrument and recording.
I am getting used to the new DAC (Yggdrasil). Wanting to do some a/b testing later and probably try to write my impressions down, although I feel a little daunted by the task of writing audio impressions. Feel much more qualified to talk about music :)

Definitely not the kind of music I've built my rig around...always fun to listen to something outside your comfort zone, even if that means listening to hip-hop with HE500's. (Maybe I should try my Grados, but those are in the other room where my girlfriend is having a Zoom meeting.)

Nothing like a bit of Mozart to cheer you up on a gray, dreary day. I'm listening to Concerto 26, "Coronation", and it's just pure joy. Bilson's recording of the concertos is by far my favorite...though the historical instruments approach is more often applied to Baroque and Early Music, I find having period instruments vastly increases my enjoyment of Classical music, too, especially keyboard music. Historical fortepianos just have a bit of a harpsichord-ish tinge to them that modern pianos have simply lost.
