It appears that the 3E now has the older 3+ moniker. Apparently, they kept the 3E ESS 9018 and added Unison. Do I have that right? I have the 3E and really like it, but a little disappointed in its short life-cycle.

Maybe it's related to supply chain issues like everything else seems to hinge on.

It's a completely updated unit now labeled the Modi + , same as Magni. Yes, it seems like the Modi 3E is discontinued. Check out Jason's blog if you are interested.

To me the 3E was a bit of a stopgap after the supply chain issues (not that it sounded bad). I'm sure Jason and team have been working on Modi+ for a while now.

    Edited for idiocy.

PS. Also not sure if this deserves it's own thread...

Yup. The new Modi + is an updated 3E. To clarify (if memory serves correctly):

    Modi 3 (AKM)
Modi 3+ (AKM, Unison, maybe some updates)
    Modi 3E (ESS)
Modi + (updated ESS, new sexier metal, steel lid with sexy paint)

Will post some Modi + measurements. Some interesting stuff...

Thank you. Would be interested in any comparisons with the prior Modi 3E(if the unit was available for testing).

I just finished Jason’s latest blog. Great reading and USB-C! Boy, you guys weren’t kidding when you said the Modi + was a complete revamp. I’m buying one. It’ll be a nice companion to my Modi 3E and Modi Multibit.

Hi Rob - we usually try to keep posts like this to a minimum here, and if you find it necessary to post stuff like updates on shipping notifications, or purchase decisions, we do so using the Status Updates/Profile Posts. Its also quite popular around here to use the Multi-quote tool (the "+Quote" button down in the bottom right hand corner of a post) to add multiple quotes to a single reply.

Just found this thread and noticed that Modi+ is newly released. Out of curiosity, why does it use old dac chip like 9018 when newer 9028 or 9038 chips are available? Is it mainly because of the cost?

Well it's an entry level DAC. Using a 9028 chip probably would have pushed it to $150 and up range. That, and the 9018K2M, 9028Q2M and 9038Q2M don't differ drastically unless you really like to drown in your SINADs. I imagine schiit mostly focused on the connectivity/unison as well as the analog output stage voicing.

The Modius uses the ESS9028 and it does sound better than the Modi E. The Modi + brings the Modi series closer to the Modius. More later. I've been on a bourbon, whiskey, rum drunk-fest this week so been ignoring the stack of gear I need to review.

Since Modi is now Modi+, Will the upcoming Modi Multibit refresh be called the Modi++?

My 2 cents on Schiit's product naming. It's terrible. To someone who doesn't live this stuff, it was easier to tell that a Modi 3 was better than a Modi 2 (probably). Now it's kind of random and Schiity. I don't know who thought this + crap was a good idea but it's terrible. I know Schiit likes to be clever and cute and sometimes snide, perhaps they are going for that.

My guess is that Modi multibit + will come after Modi multibit 3.

Did you ever get around to publishing them or nah? I was talking about DACs with some other folk and they asked for opinions on the Modi+, just now realising there may not be a dedicated thread herein for it. Measurements be damned, curious to get subjective impressions of it vs the Modi 3E if you can be bothered :)

Basically same thing as the Modi E. Same AmirNAD and same distortion pattern.

    Modi+
    AmirNAD
SINAD with a steady-stage 1kHz tone at 0dbFS output using 20kHz bandwidth using an APx555 with the cheat-mode High Performance Sine Analyzer turned on.
