But you see, I'm not denying it, am I? I said "blindly believe that price is correlated to performance". By that I meant believing that what's more expenseive will always perform better, which is simply not true. As for whether price and performance are truly correlated, I do believe that the more expensive the DACs and Amps within a brand (this is important, some brands's stuff are shit to begin with), the better they perform. As for headphones, IMO, the HD600 and HD650 are a clear step up from anything below their price and if anyone wants to get into serious headphone territory, they'd fork out the asking price. Then again, these two outperform many headphones above their price as well. Then there's the KSC75s that outperform most headphones under 100 IMO. So in the end, I do not think you can identify a clear correlation between something objective (money) and something subjective (sound quality), althought sound technicalities (distortion, transient response,...) do seem to get better with some brand.

I was tired when I read your comment, I simply missed the word blindly. No reason to post an A4 of information. My apologies.

Seriously thinking about doing this mod to my 650's.

My 600 sounds better than my 650 at the moment. The 650 sounds better dampened but I am not really liking how it sounds, removing the back foam should loosen up the 650 right (less dampening)? I like how my 600 sounds it's more looser but It sounds more pleasant like a tube.

Took off the foam on the back of the drivers on one driver and went back and forth on some of my songs, my impression was it made things clearer and brought the sound more forward. So I decided it sounded better so I modded the other driver. Now I'll listen to this a little more before I do the quarter mod.

I'd recommend doing the mod it sounds great so far!

edit: I didn't like removing the foam in front of the drivers, I'll probably do the quarter mod later.

Completely removing the foam inserts from the baffle plate results in a pretty nasty sound IMO. I'd try the Dynamat before the coin mod.

Yeah removing the foam made the treble nasty and incoherent.

I'd like to try the dynamat, does it increase the bass too much? because I felt the bass is just enough already.

Does anyone have spare dynamat? Just a small piece enough for the 2 drivers and a tiny bit extra just in case I mess up. Mailed in an regular letter envelope to california? I'll pay for shipping + a dollar or who ever offers me the best fair price.

I've done the coin mod along with the foam mod too, but I haven't gotten around to getting the dynamat. I'd be willing to pay for some dynamat to do that extra step in modding my 650s.

Pardon me, where's the baffle plate here? Seldom babble on here due to the busy days recently. I remeber the three-step of your modding is: remove the foam behind the driver, coin cut & Dymat. Any major changes?

The baffle is the flat plate surrounding the driver.

You can pick some up for 12 bucks at amazon. It says it includes a sheet of dynamat extreme.

It tightens up the bass and makes microdetail more apparent across the board.

I have plenty of Dynamat left and can ship globally for about 5 euro in an envelope and have done so for multiple friends here already. So if anyone is interested just PM me and I can probably help you out. It's well worth the time.

With the modded HD650 I noticed shrill in the treble. I think the back foam helped soften the treble. I went back and forth to listen to the same song with my unmodded 600's and I still noticed the high pitched shrill but with the HD600 the sound was much softer. The treble in the HD650 got more harsh without the foam behind the driver, but the frequency response remained the same. I dunno about this mod... it's hard to undo it as I ripped one of my foam maybe I can try putting just one layer back in.

I figured what's causing it, It needs the dynamat if the foam is removed. The driver magnet probably hits the plastic cage behind the magnet when it resonates, while having the foam disk prevented that from happening. When I poked at the magnet it moves inside the baffle.

I was looking at going towards the HD600 making the 650 looser. Does adding dynamat makes the sound even tighter than stock 650? I guess there is a trade off: looser = less detail like the HD600 but more relaxing sound, stiff = more detail but can get over analytical or fatiguing. Am I right?

Maybe the right material like dynamat will give you both? Since I read that dynamat is basically rubber. It would be okay if it tightened the bass but softened the treble or left it unchanged.

Removing the rear foam lets the HD6x0 driver breath a little bit opening up top end. The coin mod lets more of that top end through.

The dynamat will only affect the tightness and response of the low end of the frequency range. One will not change the other.

I already ordered the dynamat and it should be on it's way. Do you think I should put something thin between the plastic cage and the driver magnet (at the spot where the back foam used to be) ? The back foam seemed to dampen the magnet from resonating with the plastic cage.

I would love to listen to your guy's modded HD650's if you guys bring it to canjam.

You can just break the cage off to get rid of the resonance.it's perfectly fine

@Hands did it to his pair. I did it to mine as well. The magnet is still in its spot. Hasn't moved a bit. Just break the "spider" off using tweezers. Hands had a guide somewhere in this thread
