Elizabeth Spencer Chardonnay. Balanced: Less acidic and bright than Ramey, but nowhere near as oaky/buttery as Rombauer cougar juice and its ilk. Has complexity and structure, tastes like actual wine.

Gloria: 1-1/2 oz gin (Botanist works very well), 1/2 oz dry vermouth, 1/2 oz Cointreau, 1/2 oz Campari.

The only side benefit of COVID (at least for me) long-term recovery is a decreased desire for consumption of alcoholic beverages.

If I were to drink something now, I'd probably go with a old fashioned with a spicy bourbon.

I went from averaging a drink per day to a drink every couple of weeks. I guess that's good? My biometric data seems to think so!

The David. Origin story here, at 8:35: https://www.pbs.org/video/mind-chef-season-4-episode-9-fire/

I'd somehow never ordered this drink before, but he's closing the restaurant at the end of the year so it was now or never.

It's tasty. Bartender said he'd tried making it at home with other whiskeys, but it wasn't as good. I can see that; the hops in the R5 gives it a really different mouth feel and a boost of flavor without any extra booziness. For me, though, it could have been a little bit sweeter. So when I eventually get around to making it, I'll use R5 but I'll probably try other citrus.

Indeed. What's the story around those Act/Scene numbers?

I was "gifted" one of those by the manager at liquor store I frequent.... haven't opened it yet? Is it worth the hype?

Sorry to quote again, but I believe that bottle is counterfeit. Or else you are photoshopping/printing labels for kicks... Hope the whiskey is good at either rate.

This years release is act 10, with various scenes. (my bottle is act 9 scene 4, from 2021)

The bottle above is act 26, scene 1967, and it also has grammatical errors (high weft instead of high west), and the bottle above lists the distillery code, which is not listed on other bottles ive seen.

I could be wrong, i havent seen all releases, but generally this rye started with act 1, and we are on act 10 now...

Likely a bottle of high west rendezvous rye with a different label

@tranq is probably referring to the act/scene numbers, which are unusual. High West first made the Midwinter Nights Dram in 2013 and numbered it Act 1. Since then, they've released a batch every year in October, incrementing the Act number each time -- so this year's batch is Act 10. The Scene numbers are bottling runs; there are usually no more than a few per year, so those numbers are generally single digits. The bottle I finished during the pandemic, for example, was Act 4 Scene 4 -- typical numbers.

The numbers on @Donald North's bottle are clearly not typical. But the Scene number is 1967, so I can imagine scenarios that don't involve counterfeiting: a gift given to commemorate a 1967 birthday, etc.

Thanks for the replies and explanations, @fastfwd and @tranq - that's good to know. I've not tried any High West yet. Any recommendations for a good starting place?

It's 5:30 here, I've knocked off work, and it's the holiday weekend, so I'm double-fisting (the brown liquor is Knob Creek Rye). Happy holidays, everyone.

Yeah, I bought it years ago at BevMo. Good catch on the label - notice this printing “error” is throughout the text - perhaps it was intentional. My newer Act 4, Scene 3 does not have it.
