Anyone have a 4k or 8k Ultra Monitor for their PC? are they worth it? (Well no way for 8k yet I wouldn't think, you would need quad SLI GPU setup to even hope to run games at that resolution + I think you need 4 DV cables just to connect it, one from each card or something. I saw a video on it.

But what about 4k? They worth it?

For what, gaming, graphics, productivity, etc.? Also depends on size, less than ~30" and you get a really vivid clarity but lose the ability to track individual pixels. Still great for gaming, provided you have at least a top-tier GPU, if not two or three. There's a 27" ASUS G-Sync IPS monitor coming out in November that I'd recommend keeping an eye on. With it you won't have to worry 'bout your GPU trying to keep up with 60hz, but that would also be the framerate cap (which is really enough for most games/people 'cept for FPS freaks).

8K? Wait until displayport catches up to the needed bandwidth in a few years :)

Thank you for your advice and post anetode, very useful info! I would be mostly using it for everyday use and gaming. I have a EVGA GTX 680 FTW Overclock edition GPU with 4 gig GDDR5 memory and outrageous cuda cores and frequency clock. As long as I can get 30-40 FPS, I would be fine with that. But it will be a while anyway before I could afford one - I will keep an eye out for your suggestion on the 27" ASUS G-Sync IPS monitor coming out in November.

Personally I would wait. PC is not quite there where 4k has become mainstream. When it goes mainstream the prices will greatly go down and everyone will support it as the standard.

I have a BenQ BL3201PT which is a 4k 32" and it is an awesome monitor. But for gaming having GTX980 SLI quite decently overclocked is still not enough. I bought the 980's last year so there was no 980TI or Titan X available so it does run out of memory, luckily this screen has an excellent scaller and 1440p looks great. But i have hope for DX12 which should effectively give me 8GB vram since it will run alternate frame rendering for dual gpu. And there's no need to have a copy of the memory of GPU1 in the vram of GPU2. Atleast that's how i understood it.

Now if Nvidia fixes their DX12 performance because from the early benches i have seen AMD is kicking ass...

I wouldn't get too caught up in the whole AMD vs Nvidia DX12 benchmark test. Fact is DX12 isn't even really widely used yet and just like DX10 and DX11 it will be a very slow adoption process. Honestly AMD is in big trouble with the subpar performance graphics cards they have been releasing. Fact is Nvidia is smoking them on both the budget front and on the performance front. The DX12 issue is more than likely driver related which is an easy fix.

While i agree that DX12 benchmarks are far and few between, the thing is AMD architecture is more optimized for DX12/Mantle while Nvidia is more optimized for DX11. And the whole thing is with DX12 and Mantle is that drivers matter less and architecture matters more. The difference is that AMD can receive lots of draw calls at the same time while Nvidia architecture is more atuned to DX11 where it is limited by the api and receiving lots of simultaneous draw calls was thus not really a design goal. But perhaps Nvidia can mitigate the difference with drivers but i suspect they will need more. But like you said none of this matters till there are actual titles to support DX12.

The funny thing is by the time DX12 hits the focus point more than likely Nvidia's new Pascal architecture will be out. Nvidia is claiming 10x performance gains over Maxwell which seems like either in 2016 or early 2017 we will see more of a push for 4k to become mainstream.

The AMD mantle argument is kind of moot as what AMD called a feature Nvidia said they basically already had. Interesting what you find out are marketing points for one company is just something that the other company has been using for awhile.

Yeah exactly, AMD is still in trouble and given their recent incompetence it is not looking good. Which is sad really we need good competition. Though i read somewhere AMD is concidering splitting off it's graphic business and calling it Ati again. Not sure if there's any truth to that but it might set things up so their graphic division can be bought out and perhaps get some proper management and cash influx.

I have access (I don't own it) to a 5K screen (the iMac), and it is truly glorious for day to day use. Gaming... eh, I can use the display as an external monitor with a much more powerful workstation, and it does present details like nothing ever before. At that resolution, anti-aliasing is completely unnecessary, and the performance hit is actually less than running 4xSSAA at 2560x1600. So by convention, 4K gaming is actually about the same as 1920x1080 with 4xSSAA, but still not as good as 1920x1080 with 4xMSAA. Gauge your current graphics power and see if you'll be able to handle the jump?

Personally, it's not even like I can't go back to a lower resolution monitor (that's bollocks invented by folks who are hit by new-gear syndrome IMO), but the extra resolution is very noticeable even if you're just reading texts all day long.

On the other hand, most websites (including this one) are not properly optimized for the super high resolution that such screens offer, so only texts will be super sharp while graphics remain blurry, and may be even blurrier than a lower res screen since the lower res screens have the pixel edges kinda "illuminated" somewhat, which gives a slight sharpening effect, whereas the higher resolution screen is so dense that you can barely even notice each individual pixel.

For photo-editing, it's a joy, too, so if you're into that...

You'll want a 980Ti or Fury X for good 4K results on newer games, and even that sometimes doesn't cut it.

I'm more worried about higher refresh rates. Can never, ever go back to 60Hz. 1440P + 144Hz + fast IPS monitor from Asus = bliss.

Would be more interested in higher refresh rates than higher resolution/dpi too as I watch video a lot, but the QC with those 144hz IPS is a bit worrying.

Luckily 60hz IPS nowadays are more responsive than years ago :D

Yah 144hz ftw. As things settle down and tech becomes more evolved we will eventually see 144+hz 4k monitors. Even graphics cards a little behind right now in the resolutions they can perform.

Looks like Displayport 1.3 (no existing GPU or Monitor yet afaik) supports until 4K@120hz@24bpp, so it would be quite a few years for some even newer standards and the following new hardwares...
Annd hopefully higher DPI has became a norm by then, so we won't see those weird text/gui glitches

Btw actually 120hz is quite good, it can be divided by both 24 and 30 :>

The issue is at least with PC is that the only way those faster speeds work is through DVI not HDMI or VGA.

An other 1440P vs 4K discussion
    http://www.overclock.net/t/1555945/4k-vs-1440p/0_30

I got my hands on Retina MacBook Pro 13'' the other day. The colors seem to be more vibrant on the high PPI sceen, but somehow i didn't like the edge sharpness of the interface. I'll wait for things to settle down with 4k and better optimized desktop interface.

Using a 32 screen, and i must say. For work, reading i would rather use 24'' screen, sweet spot is probably 24''-27''.

I'll go for something like this.
