Why didn't you put spoiler alert!!???

Haha, okay, just kidding. Looking forward to your impressions! I know some of us were very impressed by what Marv considered the upgrade to that turntable.

Wow. Very curious about that Eddie Current toy. You are bringing it back up here, right? :)

I have no idea what the upgrade is but it's good!!! The Tracy Chapman recording is super resolving.

I can't tell what is the epic turntable, the ridiculous Pre + PSU, and what is the BA, but it sounds legit.

Btw, heard marv's prototype BTAmod HD800s and have some tweaks. I'll be laser cutting the notched shaped inserts at work this week and report back.

so are you taking over the anax 3.0 mod thread, and will be laser cutting inserts for us handyman-challenged, stock HD800 owners ?
    ZD mod v1.0
    ?
    ;)

    More thoughts from the airport:
    • Flying in and out for one day is perfect for a micro meet!
    • Marv is bonkers, he shows up with his SUV full of gear in the middle of the night at my hotel as if it was no big deal.
    • The platter on the VPI was in a uninterruptible power supply box and weighed enough that I didn't realize it was a platter until we opened it!
    • DAMN, Marv's vinyl rig sounds GOOD! The BA is a little less lush, but quite a bit more resolving than the previous model. The bass is WAY more articulate.
    • I've been enjoying the V2 > UERM as my travel rig but now I'm disappointed. I stole a balanced TRRS pigtail and I'm going to get another UERM cable to hack to a balanced cable.
Please note, the HD800 mod development is happening orthogonally to anything previously being worked on and is primarily driven by Marv's desire to come up with something meaningfully better than what we've had before by solving THREE (ninja edit) things while also sounding better to most people than the older mods:

    • Fitment problems with existing shapes (including fish shapes) due to bunching during compression fitting
    • Over complexity due to use of multiple materials and multiple cut outs
    • Lack of consistency from mod to mod due to different material use
I have no idea what we can and can't do outside of prototyping and test. At a bare minimum, we'll publish new cutouts, DXF files for those who have access to a laser cutter or other useful machining tools, and lists of workable materials. It's important for us to find something where materials are abundantly available because we want the mod to become ubiquitous. Heck, we're going to encourage others to put together packs to send out for cost + shipping to folks who can't wield a hobby knife.

I almost thought you meant Marv showed up at your hotel suite at MIDNIGHT... in a black SUV... full of "GEARS"...

    :punk:

Okay, I think I might have gone a bit too far there. Sorry.

I suspected you'd think VPI was GOOD! We were all blown away by the same rig at Adam's house. If you've got the time, definitely give Adam's house a visit!

Any subjective impressions on the HD800 mod? It may just be something I'll measure this weekend, so I'd love to know what you thought of it.

Marv showed up at my hotel suite at 10:30pm in a silver SUV full of audio gear. Is that close enough? :)

Marv's mod has some room for improvement. Starting a new thread since he and I have been iterating on shapes and materials. Will copy paste my statement into a new modding thread and Marv will post first measurements. I will send him 2 new prototypes in 2 weeks and he'll measure those.

Did said "gears" bring you... pleasure and satisfaction? :D

Haha, anyway, that's interesting. I'm looking forward to the new thread! I know Marv has been very successful in modding other headphones up to now, including the Abyss, so I'm very curious about how he'll approach the HD800...
