This headphone doesn't get mentioned much on SBAF.

It sounds excellent (mid-fi) for the Budget audiophile. Although it does have issues with breakup/distortion at higher volumes.

I didn't find the nasty treble peak make it sound that excellent.
It does have some nice properties for monitoring purposes.

My first headphone. Greatest headphone ever until you find a better one like a Pioneer Monitor 10 or AKG K240DF.

Keep the volume low, mind those weird dips and peaks and when you crave a good midrange ditch this Sony. Even a KSC75 has a more even frequency response.

For quick monitoring purposes a great headphone. For long listening sessions it depends (on whether this headphones gives you headaches)...

Nasty, elevated bass, thin mids, rising response from there to bright, rough treble. I've heard better in that price range. This was very low on the list.

This headphone sucks and the pads start flaking off little bits of plastic into your hair within a few months, making it look like you have black dandruff.

I echo the above and add that the non-removable, coiled cable is completely useless unless you sit at a desk a few feet from your source. Not for living room listening. I also found the clamp horribly uncomfortable.

and what do you guys think of it's bigger brother, the 7520?
my music: rock, blues and some jazz

admittedly my exposure to cans is limited...have only had these 7520s and the senn hd650s,
but i find myself using the sonys a lot....love the alleged bass hump, clarity and details.
i just EQ up and down a bit accordingly.
i''m not as well versed as many on here in being able to assess its strengths/weaknesses.

i am a basshead 'light'' in loving tight, controlled bass...not the overly done bloated stuff...you know
hearing clearly the bass guitar, or kick drum...overall prefer things in balance, however.

Haven't heard either of these Sonys but Tyll has done measurements on both:

    http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SonyMDR7520.pdf

The v6 looks like it's got higher bass distortion, with bass that starts rolling off around 60hz. Treble looks kind hot.

The 7520 looks like it has a big thumpy mid-bass sound that also rolls off, although this headphone should sound more bassy than the v6. That treble dip with the bottom at 5 khz, then shoots back up at 8-9 khz looks weird. Could be harsh, but I don't think I've listened to any headphones that have that kind of treble response so I can't say for sure how that sounds.

I used to have a really old V6 that was actually easy to listen to. The inner lining of the pad was completely ripped and exposed a ring of foam which probably helped absorb and smooth out a lot of the treble.

I'm thinking of buying a mint one-owner pair ... must be one of very few in South Arica. Curious how it would pair with more powerful headphone amps (Lyr?) and my 60W Pass DIY number.
