Yes, I will not ask any more questions here. I joined this forum 2 days ago and still trying to figure out what to do and what not to do. If I understood correctly, this thread is not for asking advice but share impressions and ideas and ask any advice on all-purpose-advice-thread. A bit different to HF but I guess that I am slowly getting it.

The Grace Combo is good. It has that slight AK4490 bloom but is the best USB bus powered thing I've ever heard. It's competitive with the Schiit M2U stuff but more portable and more expensive. I don't like the AK "Velvet Sound" crap they started using with the AK4490 but otherwise it's a capable combo.

Thank you. Instead of selling it as soon as I receive the unit, will test it out first. Hope I like it so do not have to sell and purchase something else..

Just received HD600 and M9xx at the same time. started burning in.. 1st impression out of box is size is quite smaller than I was expected and quite comfortable out of box. Formica plastic looks better than I initially expected so will keep it without custom painting... After quick 10 minutes listening, the sound is great for Accoustic and female vocal... Will continue burning in for 24 hours to see if it change anything...

I have been used M9xx with HD600 and it was okay but not great. I sold it and ordered Lambert PIBE hybrid tube amp. Hope it is better match with HD600.

Is there a lot of variation between pairs of HD600s?

    Background:

I was on ebay and I saw a pair of HD600s bidding at a stupidly low price so I decided to throw out a bid even though I already have a pair. Turns out people weren't paying attention to the listing because I ended up winning. My plan is to gift them to a friend or family member with a DIY amp I am working on, but first I had to make sure they weren't any major issues considering the price I bought them at.

First thing is that they weren't with the original box or the 6.5mm adapter, which is fine because that's what was listed. Comparing the two I noticed the build quality looks identical, so I can assume they weren't cloned. When I put them on I felt the clamping force was much stronger. Taking them off I saw that the headband was a bit more 'bent' then mine. I bought my pair used as well so I don't know if this is the way they are suppose to be and mine got stretched out. Then again I remember trying the personal pair of @ultrabike while measuring the HD250 and they felt similar to mine. Maybe this pair is just newer.

I assume Sennheiser has ridiculous quality control standards so I wasn't expecting anything different from this pair, however immediately after playing my test tracks I noticed that these sounded 'better' and even a bit more sensitive. After switching between the two phones I believe that the stronger clamping force brings the drivers a bit closer to my ears, which I think contributes to the perceived increase in loudness. But even after pushing my pair closer to my ears it just doesn't seem to have the same details. Maybe the drivers are better matched then in my pair, I have no clue. It could also be that this pair is the greener grass on the other side and I just assume whatever is newer is better. But I do hear a difference and in the end I am forced to assume that no two pairs of HD 600s sound the same.

What are the differences in condition of the pads? Pad thickness and wear make a big difference on hd6x0.

Natural variation unit to unit is pretty low. They seem to measure very very similar. As long as the hd600 has been out I am sure there have been some silent revisions. I know hd650 has the black / silver driver difference and hd580 went through a couple revisions that people claim to make a difference.

Pads appear the same thickness but 2nd pair has less wear and feels more dense, whereas the first pair feels softer and squishy. I might be due for a pad change. Any 3rd party recommendations or just find stock pads?

Stock pads are best. Knock offs are terrible and cheap. I bought some from ebay and once they arrived they went in the trash and I had to buy stock ones. Brainwavz hybreds suck out mids.

Best place to get stock pads is from Sennheiser direct. Website says they are out, but if you call them up they have plenty on hand.

How hard is it to damage the HD600s with square waves? I had my pair plugged into a speaker amp with a separate opamp for headphones. The headphone amp is relatively weak but it gets loud enough for me to listen comfortably. I set the headphones down and a certain family member comes in and couldn't hear the TV(because my headphones were plugged in) and just jacks up the volume. While the opamp doesn't generate super high voltages to melt the voice coil, I'm pretty sure it was driven into clipping and am wondering what sort of damage clipping can do to headphones.

Had 2 HD600s in my life and in my experience their drivers are very tolerant when it comes to high volume levels. I used to try low frequency square waves to check driver excursion and never damaged them by doing so.

    Hallo guys!
I have just joined this forum and I am also waiting my HD600 to arrive next week!
I will drive them with the iFi iDSD Micro at the begining and for sure I have in my plans to get a better DAC/Amp (or even seperate amp) and use the Micro for transportable use!
Does anyone use the 600 with the Micro? What do you think of the combination?
(I am in the middle of the reading of this thread but I couldn't help asking before finishing :) )

I bought HD600 in December 2015 as my first headphone when I started transitioning from speakers and big amps to headphone gear. Funny but my interest stared after watching Z Review, some of you may not like that part.
Than I read the review by Tyll, and others, and bought HD600 on a price dip on Amazon.ca. I really liked what I heard, and started wanting more, more for me was HD800S. I wanted to sell HD600, and maybe get some planars around the slightly higher price. But after listening to HE400s and 400i, Oppos, I pulled the sell add and decided to keep HD600. I just liked them more.
I am getting new Bryston BHA 1 amp and I will cut one of my HD600 cables and terminate it with two 3 pins XLRs. I am expecting many years of happy listening. I may change the amp, the cables, but I am pretty sure I will not be selling HD600, even though I got HD800S and I love it.
By the way, any opinions which cable should I mod to XLR: the 600 original or my "upgraded" 650 cable?

@wormcycle: I understand you so much.
I had about 50 headphones in the last 4 years, including an Audeze LCD-3 and an Oppo PM-1.
But in the end, I went back to the good old HD-650. This Sound is like "homecoming". :)
